Perhaps she wasn't the "greatest female dancer in musicals" but I'd be willing to bet she was the most dedicated, well-rounded performer. She knew EVERY type of dance and was even quite skilled in acrobatics. Read her biography by David Soren if anyone's interested. :)
@NewYork10009 - I think Vera Ellen was a lovely, graceful and talented dancer, there is no doubt about that ... but the "greatest femail dancer of the movie musical"??? I'd rank Eleanor Powell or Ann Miller much higher ... but we are all entitled to an opinion. One thing is for sure ... her career was way too short!
Three years have elapsed since I came across your tribute to Vera-Ellen, Diiixdixo, & it is still a huge fav. with me. Despite the amount of rum I have shoved down my neck over the years, I turned 60 yesterday (the same age as Vera-Ellen at her death in 1981). Chantal Kreviazuk's "Time" was an inspired choice of music to accompany your vid. As amunastra1 says below, "Very well done!".
@Diiixdixo. Thank you for your reply, Diiixdixo. The only other lady capable of giving Vera-Ellen a run for her money as a Hollywood dancer, in my opinion, was Eleanor Powell. Of course, Eleanor was a fantastic tap-dancer whereas Vera-Ellen was more of an all-rounder. Fortunately, there are many vids of both ladies to be seen here on YouTube but i wouldn't like to choose between them as i love watching both of them dance.
Hello Di. I just can't believe that only 49 viewers have 'liked' this video. I myself have probably watched it 49 times!! Whenever I feel like I need a dose of nostalgia or a taste of an era in motion pictures that I missed, I dial up this video in my list of favorites. Just love Vera-Ellen, so sweet and elegant.
Great tribute with a wonderful song. Very thoughful. I found this video after watching "White Christmas" again today. I wanted to find out more about the cast. Thanks for posting this.
I think Vera would have loved this if she was here. Once she quit making movies (I know she isn't the only reason) I think that musicals just lost their touch.
My classic professor is the one who wrote the bio that you mentioned in the video. David Soren(university of arizona), he cried every time he give a lecture on her. She was great. Beautiful video.
"White Christmas". Vera 'had' me, when I was around 4 or 5 years-old from the moment she cocked her head and raised an eyebrow. I was, and remain, enraptured. Too soon departed from our midst.
Thank you for this. Back in 1953, studios still sent their stars around for publicity. Vera Allen along with Phillip Reed and Judith Braun (later changed her name back to Rosmary Forsythe) all came to our little town of Camride Springs, PA and visited our schools. Vera, in my opinion) never got the credit she deserved. She was always a favorite and never appeared in a flop.....she was a real STAR. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
@Juliaflo Thank you so much for answering my question, Juliaflo. I didn't know she had passed on. She was an absolutely fabulous dancer and great actress as well! My favorites were " White Christmas" and " Belle of New York " .
"White Christmas" was released about the time I was born, and I hadn't paid much attention to it over the years until now. I saw it tonight and was captivated by Vera-Ellen. What a talent! She is most certainly my favorite dancer on screen of all time. The Mandy and Abraham dance scenes are incredible.
Vera-Ellen is the greatest female dancer alive, dead, or yet to be born. Buy the White Christmas DVD. You will see Vera at the absolute pinnacle of her greatness.
what a wonderful tribute to a beautiful, talented and brilliant woman! she was such a magnificent dancer...it is very sad to think that her only child whom she adored and loved very much passed in infancy and her marriage ended shortly afterwards. i read the book on her life and to think she died alone is very sad. RIP, Vera! I'm sure you are dancing with your daughter in heaven.
A wonderful tribute! She was a wonderful performer and dancer. I know she had a fair amount of tragedy in her lifetime. Her only child died of crib-death; it makes me sad to think of it.
Thank you very much for this... She deserves it for what she gave "us". The movies she starred in are CLASSICS and a symbol of what having CLASS used to mean! props to you for your efforts!
Hi....I was a most fortunate fellow because Vera-Ellen was a friend to me for the last 20 yrs. of her life, I loved and admired her very much and miss her every day of my life. Some of my photos with her are included in Dr. David Soren's book Vera-Ellen: The Magic and the Mystery. No way to thank you enough for this tribute to a lovely, talented, special angel......Bill Dennington
I believe this is one of the most under rated actress/dancer in history. I was fascinated with her the first time I saw perform. I never lost the fascination. You have done an excellent tribute to her . I know she would very pleased. I watch on a regular bases. Thank you for doing this.
A great tribute to such a lovely person well done indeed. I agree with you entirely any information about her life is very scarce. The book ' The Magic & the Mystery Vera-Ellen' by David Soren is the only informative book i know that has been written about her. She certainly deserves much much more. Thanks for posting 5*****
really guys... THANK YOU for watching this video, rating it, favoring it, etc. I know Vera-Ellen would be happy to know she still has people who appreciate her dedication to dance. She was a real gem. I hope you all got to see White Christmas on ABC Family last night... newly restored and Vera-Ellen never looked better in it!! Merry Christmas everyone!
Loved your tribute. This is just my opinion, but I think she was THE best female dancer ever to dance on film. She very versatile and could dance with great ease any style she was asked. Tap, Ballet, Jazz, you name it, she made it look easy! Bless your soul, Vera. Thanks for posting. This woman has gone unnoticed and under-rated for far too laong.
Does anyone have the clip from That's Entertainment 2, with Vera and Fred Astaire dancing to "Thinking of You" (originally from Words and Music"). One of the best combinations of dreamy music and dancing.
Agree altogether with Di that the tribute was long overdue, but also with you that the vertical rolls terminated too abruptly (even though the music emcourcaged it). The tribute to Audrey is also well done.
sometimes someone just gets it right, this is great, i hope people like Vera Ellen and Danny Kaye are never forgotten. but then how could they? they were both such amazing talents. her dance routine of "so in love" in "wonder man" always blows me away.. thanks for the video.
Wonderful! And indeed, long overdue, but thank you for putting it together. I've been a Vera-Ellen fan for many, many years and I've never seen some of these pictures; where in the world did you find them??
Simply had to watch it again and again, because I just read that biography about her... she was - if this is all true - very often treated like some second class starlet by the studio (and had at times a traumatic personal life). Pity she didn't get the status she would have deserved.
I'm really glad about that tribute! She was terrific!
This was indeed long overdue! I have always been a Vera-Ellen fan... she was great! (I particularly love her Slaughter On 10th Avenue dance with Gene Kelly)
That was absolutely beautiful!!! It's a very sad video, in a way... I'll always love Vera, and miss her deeply. Where did you get all of those amazing pictures? I'll probably watch this 50 more times!
Thanks for posting this tribute to my favourite Hollywood dancer Diiixdixo. Aside from being a great dancer, Vera-Ellen had the most beautiful pair of legs i have ever seen, as many of these photos posted will testify.
