i wonder why they used a wankel engine, those things have very poor fuel efficiency.

Easy to fit into the frame of the plane perhaps? Also less vertical vibration of the engine as well, I'm not sure, just possible reasons.

@BlackTalon53 they use it because it fits the weight/HP requirements to fly the plane and keep it airborne for the 6+ hours.
