this is interesting to see, i'm in Canada and didn't realize that Tomi Rae was out performing in this tribute act - so are those the Soul Generals playing then??
The Soul Gs have largely split. Keith now works a regular job, Hollie and Jeff are touring with Joss Stone, Mousey tours with Maceo, Erik tours with Bootsy, Damon Wood has his own group, so does Tony Cook.
There is a core group of Soul Gs left - Daryl, Leroy and a few others, with a bunch of new members - but I haven't seen them announce any gigs for a long time.
I was down centre front and the stewards were bitching about how long they were taking to set up. One said "They're not going to get a full set now. Fatboy Slim's on later"... I was like, "Screw Fatboy Slim!" lol
Did you see Neon Neon before hand? They were absolutely disgracefully bad. A concept album about the life of John de Lorean? Sod off -- go and get Bootsy, tell him he's on early. ;p
I caught the tail end of Neon Neon but thankfully not a lot. And they were pants.
I was due to interview Bootsy yesterday. I was supposed to interview him before the gig but they got caught in traffic and were so late that when Ia rrived to interview him they hadn't even checked in! Drat.
But the tour manager told me on the phone afterwards that Bootsy was unhappy at being shoved offstage when it wasn't his fault they started late. They were still backstage in 'meetings' at gone 8pm.
They were awesome!! The guy who performs as 'Young James Brown' is a legend in his own right. The horns section were TIGHT. Two amazing drummers. Loads of special guests including Vicki Anderson! And, of course, BOOTSY and his brother Catfish!
Do you remember the setlist? So far I have: Instrumental (Don't know the track) Pass The Peas Respect Soul Power Super Bad Give It Up, Turn It Loose Sex Machine/Talkin' Out Loud (Medley) Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved But I'm sure I'm missing some. Shame they set his gear up late and then cut his set short to compensate. He wasn't very happy.
The first track was 'Grunt Music' (sampled by the Black Eyed Peas as 'Labor Day').
I think that's almost the full set -- was there one more at the end? I was tripping on The Funk by then so I can't remember.
I know we had a "Say it loud! Long live James Brown!" session at the end and that the audience was HUGE for Bootsy (much bigger than anyone else that day). I've got a vid of the crowd I'll try and upload. It's the WHOLE festival site... :)
