females tend to have blue on there face under the light or there vent hole beside anus is bigger from the side of your cichlid you should be able to see a little bump also females like to fatten up because they starve for 2-3 weeks...just pay attention to your fish i notice the bump *vent on my cichlid and they just spawned today im happy and just waiting now

im just wondering if its just the females that have the brownish stripes on them. i have 4 yellow labs in my tank., i know 1 of the bigger ones is a male (looks like your darker yellow one), but im not sure about the other one. sometimes its a pale yellow, but other times it darkens up. it has black on its fins, but not as dark as the male and when i turned the light on this morning it had brown stripes on it

take out some males or throw in more females

well. odds are, you either

1.) had all males

or

2.) had a good male to female ratio

it sounds like you have the first one. because if there are no females than the males really dont have anyone to fight over. and throwing a female in gives them something to fight over. or if you have 2.) than you threw out the ratio and you need to either add more females or take out males.

You can learn the sex checkin the fishes anus/vent sizes. female's vent is bigger than anus and pink color. male vent is same size with anus and grey color. like this; male: oo female: oO
