Shame to the Government and the Big Car Makers, They love to keep us in bondage to buying gas and oil.It is all about the Mighty Dollor for them. AMERICANS ARE GETTING REALLY TIRED OF GETTING THE SHORT SHAFT.
This car look ugly as shitttt....but the features are ok for a car made in 1996..The Chevy Volt can take a couple things from this car.like even through it only goes 40 miles on electricy it takes longer to charge than the ev1 that goes almost 100 miles..Right now the Ev1 can be compared to the Nissan Leaf...I feel they stole this car changed it to make it more modern and sold it as there own.
You have to handed to them they always come out but life changing product but as soon they see money being lost they just kill it. At least they have committed to keep the volt even though they have just sold 3,000 ever since they came out with it.
They don't want the electric car, because there is a lot of oil to sell worldwide. First they want to do the biggest business worldwide - oil business- The electric car is possible, but there are other forces who fight against this, because of money... it's always the same reason...money..money...money........
Do you know why GM's EV1 was pulled? Because they claimed that people drove 40 miles a day when they didn't (LMAO). Who on this DVD claimed the average American drove 40 miles a day? You can not survey those who do not drive. You can not survey 100 people and speak for the 200 million people. The elderly does not qualify as the average American because they sit home for whats left of their lives!!
It was just absolutely stupid for GM to crush these vehicles. Now they're coming out with the Volt. Hmm...how long will that be around for? Until 2020? Then those will get crushed too I bet. It's sad. They look to me like they were absolutely awesome cars.California should NEVER have dropped the mandate, and even when they did they should have let people keep the cars...they'd get plenty of money from it...especially if they massed produced them and advertised well.
@ckildegaard they will probly release the volt and design it to have problems and break down alot so that everyone will think electric cars are shit, thus making the public run back to their fossil fueled cars. and lose interest in electric cars
@renegade19674 I sure hope they aren't stupid enough to do that. And no--they won't run back to fossil fueled cars, they'll just run to the competitor--Nissan :P
i'm sick of the stupid oil industry!!! enough people care about the environment to make a difference, except stupid oil companies and the most of the fucking government representatives only care about the goddamn economy, and kill brilliant ideas like this one because they have their heads so far up their asses they can't see the sun. look what happened in the Gulf!! we've become so dependent on fossil fuels it's sad...thumbs up everyone who wants to boycott/ protest the oil industry!
Everyone blames GM.. but why would they put so much time and effort into an EV this amazing only to turn around get them all back and destroy them? Obviously They were bullied into doing it. By Whom? The fosil fuel Mafia. Blame the oil campanies!! Farout people wake up.
How much range would you get if it's 105 degrees outside and you need to run the a/c while driving on the highway?
I love it when they say "zero emissions". Last time I checked, you connect it to the power grid that CREATES emissions. How about the TOXIC batteries that will haunt landfills for millions of years to come.
I will never buy GM after what they have done. I hope they have some people reading the comments and relating the disgust we all feel to their masters.
Stupid GM, if they were to stick to the EV1 program, half the cars on the road today would have been electric. And now they release the Chevy Volt, tooooo late suckers.
Somebody should just take this idea of EV1, study it and try to replicate it. Since GM basically almost dosent even exist, and since they destroyed all the cars and probably plans, they should have owned it anymore. Basically what im saying, Sacrificing one WORKING EV1, making a car based on similar functions just like the EV1.
i will never buy gm again they could care less about zero emmissions they should climbed in the ev1;s being crushed check out the nissan leaf all electric
What a car: great technique, great design! In my opinion the best car GM ever built. A revolution! Unfortunately a decade too early. However, the GM Volt is still far behind the EV1.
Breaks my heart what Gm did to these cars... hell if they still where around i buy it in a heart beat! for a lil eletric car this car kicks up pretty quick. This car probably would have changed the street/Track racing community as well.. still so sad... T.T
I wanted this car so badly. It was not offered in the Southern USA. Only when GM brings this technology back for everyone would I EVER consider a GM car again. It's sad that they possess the technology, from 1996 no less, and they are now TRYING to bring the Chevy Volt to market. Toyota and Honda are walking away with all GM's customers, they could have ruled the automotive market but chose to support the Middle East. I don't think the Middle East oil countries are filing bankruptcy!
People are stupid, and as soon as another hurricane or tornado hits a oil refinery and shuts it down for a day like it did last year people will panic and buy all the gas they can. Who's to stop them from selling us gas at 5 dollars again, they did it once and they'll can do it again. But people don't care until it happens but to when it will happen no one knows. So let us put our finders in our ears and repeat after me..... la la la la.

man i love all hippies on here. Nobody wants these cars. We want SUV and trucks because they are practical. And why does everyone wanna end oil. It employs millions of people in good paying jobs
You wouldn't know if tried one. The existing electrical grid's off-peak capacity for power generation is sufficient to power 73% of commutes to and from work by cars, light trucks, SUVs, and vans without building a single new power plant if people drive plug-in hybrids, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
Because the government told all car companies to STOP and RECALL all electric cars. They threatened the oil, and petro market. also the overall economy.
How were they a threat? They were only sold in California. Besides what are they going to do when the Nissan Leaf is released. (I think that is what the car will be called.)
A lot of people miss the car, not just you. It's very bad decisions like this that makes people turn their back on GM, besides all the other problems they have. It proved that their thinking is in step with status quo, carelessness, and complacency, not innovation, forward thinking or customer satisfaction. And they wonder why they went bankrupt? Let me count the ways....too much to mention.
It sure is! I would die for one of these cars! I could take it to work then charge it and go home, all with no gas! I really wish they would make a pure electric car again. :)
This car was canceled and crushed for several reasons. 1. Each one reportedly cost $500,000 to market and build(expensive). 2. GM did not anticipate their huge success and didn't have the infrastructure to service them. They did have mechanical problems 3. The success of the EV1 was a significant threat to the oil industry. (oil companies bought the patent to the successful Toyota RaV 4 Battery tech.) You can pay to have your gasoline combusiton engine car converted to electric.
I can't agree on MASSIVE consumer response, since, even with TV adds, almost no one KNEW about these things. Oil company thing is a bit shaky, as they would have gone to EVs if they could make money. But you also forgot something else...
These cars were EXPERIMENTAL, and GM had to pick up the liability tab. No state DOT would certify these cars as anything other than experimental. That would mean GM would have been paying legacy costs for union thugs AND the cars. Not gonna happen.
I Don't think we'll haveto worry about anybody buying any GM products soon because it looks like GM is gonna go out of bussiness in another 5 or 6 years b/c of it's inability to change with the times.
SPROOKS Jeeez, get with the 21st century. It's no longer cool to smoke. Did you not know that? These days, it's simply considered rude and disgusting habit, like pickin' your nose, farting, or scratching your ass.
In my opinion the current financial crisis GM is facing is Karma payback for their killing of the EV1. The only way out of a internal combustion transportation future is with government intervention like California did with the Zero Emission mandate.
i really didnt know about these untill today i thought it was still imposible! little did i know its all about money yet again!so when our goverment hits us with green taxes they know damn well it hasnt got anything to do with us but the car companys who wont make them due to there obvious loss in proffits! as i get older i get more confused with the ways of world! how could this be if it wasnt all a big con! its all about the millions baby and that means the public can put up and shut up!
GM would have been in a better financial position if they never scrapped this car. This car would have been their life saver. But instead, they caves to the oil companies.
If GM sold enough of the EV1 without all the interference, drama they received, the prices would have gone down just like flat screen TVs, and dvd players did. But the oil companies, parts suppliers for Internal combustion engines feared the EV success.
DRSmetal but someone else put in a better light. The only reason the EV1 was produced at the time is cause California had a ZEV law. Once the law was scrapped, they crushed the EV1s cause they were expensive to build, market and service. It had nothing to do with them wanting to get into the hybrid or alternative fuel car business. They can't think that far ahead and weren't interested. Chevy Volt was born out of forced interest. Their heart is not in it.
When gas prices shot up last year, there was so much talk about the need for clean energy, now all that is gone.
To bad we can't change because of the addiction to foreign oil. If prices go back, were stuck again. Nothing is going to change unless we have the "heart" change.

GM paid $600 to destroy each EV instead of selling the 1,000 EV1s for $33,000 each.
They invested over $1 billion dollars in the project and threw it away
This is why i extremely distrust GM. Ford & Toyota are the only brands i will ever buy.
