Thermodynamics was developed in the field of engineering... It's now used in biology, chemistry, physics, metallurgy, as well as several other areas. (Plenty of friends on plenty of different courses that all complain about thermodynamics)

@ozmoroid My favorite part of the TG's thermodynamic video was something about people being fatter 20 years after graduation was proof of the 2nd law or entropy at work. Uh, no morons. A person getting fatter is a person accumulating energy that is available to the system. A younger person taking that same energy and burning it off as body heat through activity is actually more entropic. All at a local level of course. The accumulation of fat is still entropic at the system level.

Point 1: Entropy can be part of a specific system. Take for example a cup of coffee. As its heat gets released, its temperature starts to reach a point of thermal equilibrium, aka: room temp. At this point, the entropy of this system is at its maximum.

Well, our standard of living is certainly higher. The Romans and Greeks had slaves and practiced infanticide. I'm happy to live at a time when those things are considered immoral. it is hurtling around the sun at 30 kilometres per second.
Nor is it sitting upon pillars (1 Samuel 2:8)

@ozmoroid My favorite part of the TG's thermodynamic video was something about people being fatter 20 years after graduation was proof of the 2nd law or entropy at work. Uh, no morons. A person getting fatter is a person accumulating energy that is available to the system. A younger person taking that same energy and burning it off as body heat through activity is actually more entropic. All at a local level of course. The accumulation of fat is still entropic at the system level.

Goodstein (State of Matter) writes dQ=TdS while Kittel writes DQ = TdS. He explicitly uses the D and d notations to show an infinitesimal change in a quantity that is not well-defined (D) or is well-defined (d). Kittel's is the more precise. ∆Q or dQ imply a small amount of heat energy transferred.

Point 1: Entropy can be part of a specific system. Take for example a cup of coffee. As its heat gets released, its temperature starts to reach a point of thermal equilibrium, aka: room temp. At this point, the entropy of this system is at its maximum.

Indeed, but many thoughtful religious folk complain about secularists doing the same thing in characterizing them as all being like the self-assured moron seen here. And i must concede that certain YouTube atheists (not including Ozmoroid & most other "stars" of the online rationalist squad) are guilty of such.
And there ARE, after all, plenty of REALLY nutty libertarians.

I know, but it's still frustrating. Especially when someone who used to be one of my favorite youtubers doesn't seem to be able to distinguish between nutty libertarians, non-nutty libertarians, and neocons. Just because the Republicans have been going to our rallies recently doesn't mean we're the same group.

I havent seen any Thunderfoot videos where he attacks neocons, but i cant imagine he confuses them with libertarians, who are practically the exact opposite from neocons' aggressive militarism & imperialism. His seething attacks on HTWW, tho well-aimed, give entirely too much attention to that obnoxious conceited little prick, whose phony "libertarianism" includes rabid support for state executions. HTWW is just another archetypal specimen of insolent anti-intellectual "frat boy'" right-wingism.

I couldn't agree with you more about HTWW's political views, but I feel that Thunderf00t has confused him with real libertarians. The fact that he refers to HTWWs, the crazy anti-vaccine guy, and regular libertarians in the same breath and with the same criticism is troubling.

Virgil0211: Agreed, but like many liberals, TF tends to see "the Right" in undifferentiated terms, lumping together ideological trends with little in common aside from being tagged with this archaic label (the same applies in reverse of course). So neocons, paleocons, theocons, neofascists, & assorted libertarians are all "on the Right", while neoliberals, social democrats, state socialists, libertarian socialists, communists & anarchists are all "on the Left." Utterly bankrupt terminology.

I, for one, have burnt out on the whole liberal-conservative thing and the demonizing that often goes with the dichotomy. It takes all kinds of people and points of view to make the world interesting. Viva la difernecia!

Perhaps it's this dichotomy that leads to so much of the anger and miscommunication between the various viewpoints. I don't know. Maybe it's in human nature to seek something to rally against and hate, or at least a natural instinct that must be overcome.

I'm always wary of declaring particular traits to be ineluctable "human nature", simply because we still have such a limited understanding of our own nature. But in any case, i certainly dont 'hate' people with different viewpoints; after all, i often have different viewpoints from myself! As long as they can make a reasoned argument for their position, they deserve my attention.
And the rest is noise...namely, Fox Noise.

I dont really think it is. While it has its share of abrasive personalities, like "old yeller" Chris Matthews, hes a dyed-in-the-wool centrist establishment Democrat, not a far-left ranter. Keith Olberman has become the same type of predictable gasbag as his Fox nemises, but hes still smarter & more rational than O'Reilly, Beck et al (yeah, thats high praise). Rachel Maddow is easily the best of the lot among any of the cable pundits (for what thats worth).
