I've seen alot of hating on this movie... I get that its not historical accurate and the actress does not fit the part. What I would like to remind people is that the most people on here like the show the Tudors right, Jonathan rhys meyers surely does not fit the part of Henry VIII. However what there trying to do is attract there audience. She may not look like Cleopatra but Cleopatra was said to look exotic looking (By some accounts), and to most who are watching this actress does.
I already knew the acting would be pretty bad, but it's worse. The girl playing Cleo is terrible, even her facial expressions are odd, was she trying to look seductive or scary? And the dialogue/characterization isn't helping. The sets/music/costumes are nice but couldn't they have gotten an actual actress to play Cleo not just a pretty face. And I don't like the Liz Taylor version either, it's just too dated.
@riptiderobin15 Couldn't agree more. Pretty girl, but her delivery sucks. She also has a very obvious Spanish accent. Apparently they did no training with her to at least make her accent sound a little more vague. I find it insulting when filmmakers think the viewers will fall for anything "exotic" without making any attempt at historical or linguistic accuracy.
A narrative historical story depicting the life of cleopatra of Egypt alongside Julius Caesar during his tyrannical rule and dicatorship in Rome. Good to know there are people who still care about history.
This girl is so not right for a Cleopatra role. She is latin!!! Or at least looks a lot like it. Cleopatra was of Macedonian descent, that means Greek... Greek women are different from latin...
I think she was an extraordinary woman and destiny made her meet an extraordinary man =) and I'm sure when they met for the first time they simplyknew it: that they belong together.
Of course policy also played an important role but I also believe there was love between them. If you read more about Caesar and Cleopatra you will realize that they HAD to fall in love with each other. Cause they were such awesome historical personalities :)
This Cleopatra looks and sounds like a coed reciting lines in her English class. Unfortunate casting in my opinion. Dalton's command and gravitas required someone with more power, poise, and inner strength.
The beginning of this film makes Cleopatra look like a silly power-crazy girl, when I believe she was clever and intelligent. But she is very skilled when it comes to seducing men. Ha ha. And anyway, scientist and other people nowadays have realise that Cleopatra and her siblings were also a bit african. I have also realised that this is not that accurate. The political correctness will not sell well. It is always better to start watching a historical film as a film, not an accurate recount.
@Laylawantsthisname She wasn't a classic beauty, but she was considered beautiful in a striking way. Greek historian Dio claimed she “was a woman of surpassing beauty... and a knowledge of how to make herself agreeable to everyone”.
@Laylawantsthisname Indeed. I think a lot of portrayals place too much emphasis on her looks and not enough on her appeal through seduction and intellect. She also had a great appeal to Romans because of her heroic lineage; from one of Alexander the Great's generals.
this movie was obviously made by some racist white men...who finds women from other cultures attractive n have to name them unintelligent to sleep with them...as they r too proud to be fing white...f the mofo who made this movie...must be coward octavian's descendant....
@1231lovelyn Your right. And nevermind the fact that the real cleopatra was black. And she was far more clever and powerful than she is portrayed in this movie.
historical inaccuracies aside (and there are few), it's a really good film version of the last Queen of Egypt. Much better than the classic 1963 version, in my opinion, which I like because the screenwriters used Gaius Suetonius Tranquilus and other ancient sources as the basis for the screenplay, but I think that Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton over-acted in most of their scenes. I think that Ms. Varela, Mr. Dalton and Mr. Zane were perfect as Cleopatra, Julius Caesar and Mark Antony.
Cleopatra and Caesar did marry, and after Caesar's assasination in 44 B.C., Cleopatra fled back to Egypt, and seduced Mark Antony (Caesar's right-hand man and cousin) three years later, and married him. Cleopatra was a shrewd woman, and knew exactly how to get what she wanted. She was not a whore, or slut. She and Caesar married not only because they loved each other, but because Caesar had no son (his only child Julia died in childbirth) and Calpurnia was barren.
This movie is very biased. It does not show the true nature and story of Cleopatra. No offense, but the acting is not believable at all. The 1963 movie is much better.

there wasn't a real dialogue between caesar and cleopatra. i mean what a strange scene! one minute after caesar first meets cleopatra they're already banging!
cleopatra seems to have been an extremely clever and hot woman to seduce both caesar and mark anthony but in this series they simply fuck. there isn't much dialogue, just like a porn movie!
in this series she is totally gorgeous but seems a bit dumb.. the seduction didn't convinced me at all plus the bed talk made she look like a whore!
omg people r mad funny with the below comments but this CLEO RESEMBLES MORE TO THE ORIGINAL CUZ OF THE SKIN COLOR. BUT ELIZABETH TAYLOR HAD A MORE BEAUTIFUL FACE WHICH IT IS SAFE TO SAY THAT WAS LIKE CLEO, BUT CLEOPATRA WASNT WHITE. just mix this cleo skins color nd body nd elizabeth taylor face will come a perfect cleo ;)
I believe Cleopatra was much more intelligent than this actress and the script portrays her in this film. She was believed to be a strong leader, clever politician, and less of a beautiful seductress. She and Caesar certainly had sex, but also formed an alliance of nations. But that doesn't sell movie tickets, does it? Kind of irritating if you know history at all. But I shouldn't watch movies for historical perspective.
@samson4474 you should watch the 1963 version. elizabeth taylor did a great job.her version of Cleopatra is smart, strong, proud, astute, and yes beautiful .but beauty is not enough to have influnce over a man like ceaser.any whore can have sex with a man but only smart woman can hold a man like ceaser, and elizabeth taylor did a great job!
@KATROSE92, it was correct on most aspects (excepting Octavius being in Rome at the time of Caesar's assasination, and Antony's death). Octavius was Caesar's great-nephew, so he had a close relationship with Caesar, and had he known of the plot againt his great-uncle, i think he most certainly would have stopped it). Also, Antony comitted suicide, though it was probably cut out of the VHS, as he's shown being carried into the palace after being surrounded by Octavius' men in a final battle.
@HistoryLover1550 It is highly disputed among historians if Kleopatra VI Tryphaena was actually Kleopatra VII sister because the sources are pretty contradicting. Most historians nowadays believe that she was the wife of Kleopatra VII father but possibly only the mother of Berenike IV and not of the other 4 children.
@Rhapsody151 Right, according to historical accounts when Ptolemy XII fled the country after his Egyptian subjects revolted against the taxes he increased, Berenike IV led the uprising against him. Kleopatra VII was 11 at the time and accompanied her dad. Berenike had her husband strangled and her Mom beheaded! Her dad and younger half-sister came back with Antony's troops backing them up, defeated Berenike who too was beheaded.
if anyone wished to know cleopatra had yellow hair like the ancient greeks and not black! she really was a remakable woman but it was never discoved what happened to her body after she died.
If I remember my ancient sources correctly, Cleopatra did not possess peerless physical beauty but rather exuded charm and personality. That quality can sometimes be as intoxicating as a gorgeous face or well-endowed figure.
i think ths tory with the rug is true, because cleopatra was smart enough to know she would have to do a lot more than just come to impress caesar.furthermore why should anyone has invented the story of their first meeting?
@ArialnTheSky The Cleopatra on this movie is shown as B-E-A- utiful woman, but the REAL Cleopatra was not attractive at all. Her most attractive trait, says Plato, was her voice and her way of carrying a conversation. If you don't beleive me, look "Cleopatra's Bust".
@5070162lee , every known philosopher and historian says this as well. They deplict her looking Greek on coins as an unattractive woman. However, the egyptians deplict her as a beautiful deity and queen. Other than that, no one really knows how she looks because there are no real pictures of her.
In addition to her beauty she also had another thing that was quite pretty..... her bank account. Egypt was the wealthiest state at that time and thats probably why Marc Antony found her so atractive and Caesar the same way. I mean come on she has a golden couch on which she sat!!
they allways make the cleopatra,s in movies to have dark hair and and dark skin but in documents that whas found in egypt and rome shows that she had red hair and it also sead by historicals from rome who ducomented cleopatra,s arival in rome also whrote in their documments that she had red hair and she had lighter skin color for an egypt princes she look more like an roman princes then an egypt princes i wish those movie producers stick to the real story
she sure is cunning and will do whatever she has to do to get what she wants. She knows she is in debt to Rome and by seducing cesar she can scheme her way out. And by having her sister and brother killed they are no longer a threat to her.
@dhanedhar Cleopatra knew she needed to get Rome on her side to keep Egypt free. When Caesar came to Egypt, he came not to invade it, but in search of his rival Pompey who he pursued into Egypt after his defeat @ Pharsaluus.
@dhanedhar Tiberius was Octavian's step-son, octavian never liked him much. He was Livia's son from a previous marriage. As he got older he became a murderer and a pedophile, Caligula was said to have killed him.
@dhanedhar Octavian didn't kill Tiberius, he was the only obvious heir to the Roman Empire after his nephew, the popular Germanicus was killed, some say by Tiberius himself.
this is the most cheesy dialogs ever!!

if anyone wished to know cleopatra had yellow hair like the ancient greeks and not black! she really was a remakable woman but it was never discoved what happened to her body after she died.
kikyosan543 1 year ago

5070162lee 1 year ago
@5070162lee , every known philosopher and historian says this as well. They deplict her looking Greek on coins as an unattractive woman. However, the egyptians deplict her as a beautiful deity and queen. Other than that, no one really knows how she looks because there are no real pictures of her.

Seriously people your having conversations on youtube???????? wow!

In addition to her beauty she also had another thing that was quite pretty..... her bank account. Egypt was the wealthiest state at that time and thats probably why Marc Antony found her so atractive and Caesar the same way. I mean come on she has a golden couch on which she sat!!

she sure is cunning and will do whatever she has to do to get what she wants. She knows she is in debt to Rome and by seducing cesar she can scheme her way out. And by having her sister and brother killed they are no longer a threat to her.

@dhanedhar I don't know why Cleopatra seduced Caesar. But my guess would be to save her kingdom.

what the hell is happening to you tube it is changing
dhanedhar 1 year ago
Cleopatra was only twenty one when she seduced Caesar. Caesar was fifty two.
eilislorna 1 year ago
@eilislorna and why did she seduce ceaser
he attacked her kingdom
dhanedhar 1 year ago
@dhanedhar Cleopatra knew she needed to get Rome on her side to keep Egypt free. When Caesar came to Egypt, he came not to invade it, but in search of his rival Pompey who he pursued into Egypt after his defeat @ Pharsaluus.

@HistoryLover1550 hey do you know about tiberius
he was octavians son
right?
dhanedhar 1 year ago
@dhanedhar Tiberius was Octavian's step-son, octavian never liked him much. He was Livia's son from a previous marriage. As he got older he became a murderer and a pedophile, Caligula was said to have killed him.
HistoryLover1550 1 year ago
@HistoryLover1550
i saw this series in which tiberius was killed by octavius
dhanedhar 1 year ago
@dhanedhar Octavian didn't kill Tiberius, he was the only obvious heir to the Roman Empire after his nephew, the popular Germanicus was killed, some say by Tiberius himself.
