Let's face it. Shredding is basically testosterone driven. All of the Greats from Al Di Meola to Zappa (this includes Larry Carlton) did the shred thing when they were younger players just to prove that they could. And Larry certainly showed he had the speed. The thing that Larry Carlton has always had that I don't find in alot of other great players is just the sweetest "touch". Which is just part of the reason he was and is still one of the most sought after session players ever recorded.
Some people remember where they were when they heard the news about JFK... I remember exactly where I was when I first heard Larry Carlton --I was 16, washing dishes in a restaurant when The Crusader's tune "Spiral" came on the radio. Blew me away!
Larry did a lot of the guitar work on Donald Fagen's "The Nightfly" album (BTW, the best version to look for is the Bob Ludwig-mastered original LP, with the "RL" in the deadwax - One of the best-sounding LP's ever released). He also played guitar on the "Hill St. Blues" theme song (from the TV show). He played rhythm guitar and some fills work on the SD song "Aja" (but not the guitar solo in the middle - That's Walter Becker - Listen to the guitar before and after the solo - THAT'S Carlton).
That's what they do: make a special es335 Larry Carlton signature guitar. I suppose Larry gets the guitars for free. Nice guitar and a nice guitarplayer.
Larry still plays his 1968/69 ES-339 which he paid for it personally in 1969... Mr. 335 was replicated in 2004 and it is for sale by Gibson... but Larry doesn't use that!
Right. You see that thing up close and you'll notice it's got some mileage on it. It must be "the one" because he's held onto it for all these years, and after all the different guitars he's played over the years (including the Valley Arts custom stuff) he's come around full-circle to playing his old 335 again. Ya' gotta' love the classics.
@lilnetty2 Amen to that! I see these 'speed wizard' so-called master Guitar teachers that are on the Net, and they have Zero heart, Zero soul in their speed-driven techniques-it kind of misses the whole point-Music is an emotional art, you have to feel something.
Larry STILL kicks ass...he's older but not an old man. Don't put him in a nursing home yet, he can smoke your ass in every way. He plays for the song. Check out LC and Robben Ford. Also him and Steve Lukather.
LC still plays good as he used to be and his finger ability remains but like every musicians you have to inspired and to be in the mood...on non musicians and bla-bla persons who CANNOT play an instrument will say something STUPID like that!
Larry Carlton always sounds good no matter what he plays BUT, I'd like to find out if he still has what it takes to play the good ole fusion fast guitar licks from the past like "Tight Squeeze" & "Point It Up". I say he can't because he hasn't since the 80's. I gave up seeing him in concert in many hopes he'd play his fast fusion tunes from the past. He never has so I say he's lost the ability to SHREDD. He is WAY too mellow for me anymore. See Scott Henderson & Tribal Tech for guitar SHREDDING.
Lonaticc, I have to agree. I still love LC, but he seems to be a different guitar player. To me, I note a "pre-assault" and "post assault" (you know some a...hole tried killing him...) He plays much mellower now, no more speed riffing, etc. but he still has his signature tone.
when you have been playing guitar for decades you dont feel any more like "shredding" to prove everybody you can play fast. Playing fast doesnt need much skills, but paying attention to every note you play thats a true good player
Agreed but you still have to play the tunes for your ORIGINAL fans that keep coming to his shows. I supported Carlton when he was a nobody playing at The Baked Potato in Stuido City, CA. Once he got the limelight he gave up playing to his ORIGINAL fans, Seen him at Universal Studios and OLD fans were requesting "Point It Up" and the olides. Carlton said, "Yeah, yeah, will get to those", then he NEVER did and still doesn't. I say he lost the ability to "SHREDD" when he was shot probably.
HalCmman, stop insulting Larry. i just saw your shit. it's okay. definetly. i like it, but you can in no way say, yout better than Larry fuckin' Carlton. Larry is the king of jazz, and no jackass like you could do it better.
yeah right HalCmman<Poser LOL. Nice try pretending to be me. Larry Carlton is my HERO. I think of Larry as the GREATEST Guitarist alive! Hey Pete, I'd be upset too if someone insulted Larry. It's cool man. Check our links. I didn't type anything negative about Larry. LC is a LEGEND and my guitar HERO :-)

shredding is one flavor, and adds to a players trick bag.
tasteful "soloing" is a platform for speed bursts more so than speed being a platform for taste. non stop shredding is no fun to hear, after a while.

@GalaxyHorse I even like some of the shreddy players , its astounding to witness some of these cats
do their thing and some are musical players....its a niche.
Maybe speed is like gravy : even though it is a tasty liquid does not mean you should drink a lot of it.?
