I am 16 years old from Sweden and i'm gonna move to Spain and i really want to learn how to surf. I had go Longboard for about 2 years so i have very good balance. what board shall I buy?
@katiekatzlove age doesnt matter as much as skill. my brother is 18 and cant ride anything under a 7 foot longboard. a kid i know is 10 and rides a 5'6" shortboard. if you havent ever surfed before look into a board like the yellow one in the video. it is soft foam so you can hurt yourself too bad and are a bunch of fun. hopefully this helped a bit.
hey, i wondering what kind of board i should get. i have been surfing once or twice and i am an amateur state champion wakesurfer so i have a lot of balance. i am 6'2 and weigh 150 lbs. what kind of board would you suggest?
I always think that the first board to buy should be the type of board you intend to ride at a medium to advanced level, either longboards or shortboards. Funboards are great to learn, but buying one for yourself is kind of a waste of money since after a few sessions you will evolve and want to move to something else. Take some classes and then buy your first board. Or if you wanna learn on your own, try borrowning a funboard or buying a used one. In terms of size i would say around 7'.
6.8 is good size dnt forget the paddling and balance on a short board is so much differenet, next time you go surfing hire a hard shortboard before you commit to buying the wrong size, that way you will get an idea of the perfect fit for you
Hey guys well im just starting surfing and i rented a soft top i was able to get on it and ride it .. I really dont want a long board and i really want something more challenging than a soft top. Im 5"7 135 pounds.i want something smaller so i can learn how to do tricks and monuver it . What board should i BUY . Any Advice would be appreciated thanks!
I used to surf a lot when i was small and I have a fun board, I just started up again very recently and fun boards are more fun than longboards i have been on
Starting with a fun board ( 7ft-8ft ) is better than starting with a lonboard
It's just as easy to control, plus you can learn to manuver it, best of both worlds pretty much, plus when you upgrade to a shortboard, you'll catch on quicker, plus funboards can ride super small waves like a longboard,
@rndmusrnm You have a choice. If you want to go towards the short board angle than go with a fish. You could go a little smaller but I wouldn't stray too far from 6'0''. 5'10'' is about the lowest I would go.
umm i skate bowls and really well rounded with a board under my feet...im thinking of starting surfin...am i gonna pick it up quicker than someone else that dosent??? thx for the help..
What about a shortie thats 7'2"x22.5x2 5/8, my first board, and Im 5'10" 185..Will I have wooble issues? Was thinking of getting a diff one thinking it will be to hard. Any input? Thanks.
If you are still learning, i would definitely go with a longboard, nothing over 9'6" and i wouldnt pay more than $175 for it. Once you're comfortable paddling out and standing up you can switch to a shorter board (probably a fun shape). Longboards are definitely the best for learning and practicing the surfing basics.
Allright, cause thats the one I have...I have no problem paddling and catching waves, standing up is my next step. Ive snowboarded plenty so Im thinkin itll come quick. I picked up everything including the board, full QS suit and soft racks for 450, so it wasnt bad. But I do have the chance to switch for a diff board. Still debating.
I do need to add, Ive spent only 2 days messin around on a 7 ' 2 shortie a little narrower than mine, and an 8' fish. Thats my surfing backround, then went out and bough the one I previously listed.
Yeah, actually catching the waves is one of the more challenging aspects to surfing. You have to be in the right spot at the right time. If you can, you might want to rent a 9foot longboard for a day or two. This will help set the basics for popping up, as well as proper foot placement on the board.
Well, it all depends on the width of the surfboards tail. If the tail is more rounded, but still comes to a point, then you have a Funshape, which is good for beginners. If the tail is narrower, and comes to a straight, sharp point then its a shortboard that was made for bigger waves and more advanced surfers.
i am a real beginner. I took a half a day surf class and I was actually able to stand up the first time : ) I didn't know much, but i went out to buy a cheapest used surfboard and bought a 7ft bit narrow and pointy ends. just wondering what type of board is that.

@MatthewParsells How about if you have used a fun-shape board, and a 6' 3" board and feel pretty comfortable with that and want to go shorter?

wouldnt it be cheaper to go to a funboard right away for a short board instead of buying every board until a short?
