  • hey turn the button never done that before

  • if u break a string it will make no sound at all

  • thanks!!!!!

  • just bit on the "long winded side"holy smokes man

  • Here's the sound of my G-string...

  • glad I found this channel.

  • A nice start, but showing the spots to tune in relation to the others would have been more useful. With that info, all one needs is the pitch of the first string to be correct, then tune in relation to that one. One could figure it out from here, I suppose, once tuned to yours, but I found the tuning every string to match yours tedious.

  • If you want to play "Dance Tonight" by Paul McCartney, don't forget to tune a whole step down before you start.

Unless you're an experienced player, do not try to play the song in the same key without tuning down, or you'll end up in casualty!!

  • Lol he said G String!

  • just got my first mando and this was a great and easy way to tune it! I'm usually a guitarist, and have my nice little built in tuner, so this was a big help to my mostly untrained ears :)

  • Thanks amigo! Am a reasonably accomplished guitar player but just got my first mando and was lost even after using my Petersen strobo. I had it tuned but several octaves off. ;-) Your quick demo got me straightened out. Thanks a million!! Would point out to newbies to be patient as sharpening one string increases tension on the neck and causes others you already tuned to go flat. It's a process but keep at it and they'll all sing! Thanks again!

  • i turned my ukulele into a mandolin :/

  • Is G the thickest string? oh my mandolin is so out of tune

  • I'm just learning the Mandolin. I play guitar and understand the tuning cords. The mandolin is a different instrument. One I just purchase the Ibanez M510 A-Style Mandolin. I understand wood in guitars and this one seems a winner for the price. Am I correct.? $149.00 out the door brand new. Also I own a KORG chromatic tuner. Will this devise work on a mandolin as it will for a Acoustic and electric guitar. Is G..D...A..E..from top to bottom the cords for a mandolin. Thx.

  • @museken I just purchased the same one!! :)

  • i'm new in mandolin but why there are 8keys and only tune 4keys ?

  • @7BassAss7 There are 8 strings on a mandolin because it causes a natural chorus effect. However, there are some electric models that are built with only 4.

  • WAY TOO QUIET. But good, nonetheless.

  • G: 1:26

    D: 2:41

    A: 3:15

    E: 3:50

  • @bluesboydude hah Thanks I was just about to do that too!

  • thanx man this video helped alot i traded my mandolin for a tin whistle lol

  • @1:24

  • nice

  • its like im watching Dora

  • I want to match your g string!

  • thanks

  • Thanks so much

  • thanks so much for posting this video. I moved away from my mandolin teacher over a year ago and haven't been able to pay $35 an hour to keep lessons up here where we live now. finally my mandolin is in tune :D

  • Thanks mate!

  • Thank you for posting! I tuned my husband's new mandolin for him while he was at work!

  • Hmmm, when I don't have my contacts in, his name magically becomes Braid Lard. :]

  • My G-strings are tuned

  • Thank youuuu

  • I was going to tune the E string and it broke lol.

  • @Mnog10 Ditto! I ant tune that bloody E-string either

  • @Mnog10 same haa

  • thx man!

  • So the mandolin tunes same as violin!! On the fifths.

  • Turn the "button"?

  • As a strings player, jokes about G strings get really really old. -_-

  • Your G string sounds a little loose, sir!

  • thanks for the help....it might help others if you write the time on the video that the actual tuning starts....it helps those of us who need to tune fast :)...we can skip right to the tuning....

    thantks

  • skip to 4:20 if you don't need a lesson on how to tune a mandolin.

  • Can you use a guitar tuner to tune a mandolin as well??

  • he goes 2 fast

  • i thought i would never be able to tune it without help! thank you :)

  • ''If you tighten the string long enough your string will snap''

  • watch as i tune my other gstring!

  • THX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Brad Baird you legend. You make my life.

  • can you use a guitar tuner

  • @Purifiedtheband If you are using a chromatic tuner than yes. I recomend a Korg tuner

  • Anyone who wants to play Paul McCartney's "Dance Tonight", don't forget to tune each string down before you start.

  • how far down did paul tune it? whole step? (2 frets down) or half step (one fret down)?....I like that song, sounds like it could gave been on the white album

  • @inkey2 Whole step down (D G C F, instead of the usual E A D G)

  • Thanks SIR!!

  • HERE'S THE SOUND OF MY G STRING.

  • Comment removed

  • @werdnaniai Hahaha

  • well i went on a site and it said all the pitchs for a mandolin to be tuned in , and i was tuning my first e strig and it snapped off, what the fuck i only had this thin for an hour

  • same experience right here

  • +1

snapped the E string within an hour

  • HELPFULL TIP:

if your mandolin is tuned too low, raise all the strings together, slowly, instead of one at a time, or your STRINGS WILL SNAP.

  • i am so happy i was able to learn how to tune a mandolin..

its been over 8 years now.. finally i did it.

    you are great!

  • ah my mandolin was not tuned right! thanks! I got it on the first try! yay.

  • aright this is frustrating. My A string was like 2 notes flat. I twist it half a turn and it snaps off. same thing happened with my E string as well. Is something wrong with the string, or am I doing something wrong?

  • i dont play mandolin but its definitely just your strings

  • This was super helpful!! I was trying to tune my mandolin with my keyboard (as my book suggested), but I kept getting the pitch correct, but the incorrect OCTIVE! haha... So it was good to hear a real one to get me on the right track. :) Thanks!

  • i really don't think that a video on tuning a mandolin needs to last over five minutes, jaysus a lot of it is unnecessary

thanks for the video anyway, needed to find out about this

  • thanks very much

díky díky konečně polopatě (it´s in czech)

  • Thanks for the vids. My mando has been collecting dust for a year, time to get rockin again.

  • Wow that really helped! Thanks!

  • Brad, I've always left the tuning to the tuner for my pianos but WOW I'm really getting it however I feel like they could bust any second. Thanks again Padna!!!! I spent 2 weeks learning just the 1st 7 pages of the Rach 3rd piano Concerto I'll put the same effort into this but I'm 47 years older!!!!!! You have a great flair for teaching I could tell that immediately, your student, Mike

  • Thanks, Mike. Interesting that you mention the piano. In my other life I am a piano tuner. Good luck and hang in there.! Brad

  • Brad, a buddy in Calif. said my Mandolin may have a high action. He said if it was a low action my fingers maybe able to withstand the strings. Is there any way to tell if it's a high action? BTW, the way you can tell a good teacher is their ability to come down to the beginners level and in the teaching assume the student knows nothing and then shows patience with his advice. That's very hard to do after playing an instrument for years and your very good at coming back to those 1st baby steps!!

  • Am I right in thinking that once you've got the G-string tuned you should be able to tune the other strings at the seventh fret?

Doesn't quite work with my mandolin. I'm guessing the bridge may be in the wrong place. What's the best way of working out where it should be?

  • Loads of people saying their strings are breaking. I'm hoping to get a mandolin at the weekend and have been watching these vids to get a heads up on the mandolin. I play guitar already.

I'm wondering, is the position of the bridge too far back for these guys breaking strings? This would ean you have to tighten the strings more to get the orrect pitch, so could be the reason folk are breaking strings. Check the position of your bridge and ensure it is in the correct place.

  • thank god for this video...just bought my first mandolin, and discovered it's not exactly the same as guitar, which i have played 15 years.

  • hahahaha...i can't get over " Here's the sound of my G-string"

  • This a great video for snapping strings!

  • i broke both my A strings and the top E string!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

  • is it ok to tune the Mandolin G-C-E-A like the ukelele?

  • Good, simple, simple and useful video. Especially if you know how to tune another instrument like a guitar or ukulele. I made a cigar box mandolin and needed to know the tuning before I bought strings. Now i'm all set.

  • my mandolin is about 30/40 years old... wish I'd watched this first.. I made every mistake he mentions :( I was literally struggling to tighten the heads near the top they were so stiff... I was just waiting for it to snap off and take my eye out.

  • I cant get mine to sound like that. Every time I try a online tuner they never work. Is there a electronic tuner I can buy in stores?

  • yes , it tunes the same as a violin.

  • Off to buy a new E-string. :(

  • lmao same.. my E just went ping :(

  • Every time I try to do this Mine sound so low that When I tighten it, they snap

I'm gonna get somebody else to tune it!

  • thanks this helps alot.

  • Blam! There goes the G string. Crap.

  • I just broke the A string

  • wtf i have some ghetto piece of shit mandolin that couldnt imagine tuning that high

  • I must have the same one, because I just broke my brand new elixer e string.

  • Well, what I learned to do was wrap E and A strings around the tuner BEFORE putting the string through and tightening it like the guy says in his other video.

Also, you need to give the strings time to stretch a bit. I'll end up tuning for over 12 hours, just so that the mandolin and strings get used to the new tension. You need to do it slowly.

Hope I helped in some way =) Don't give up.

  • good idea, thanks

  • Very good, helped me a lot, seeing as I just got my mandolin for my birthday and tried to tune it like a guitar...

  • Thanks very much for posting. Very helpful. I had no idea what I was doing, problem solved in 5 minutes. Please keep posting.

  • ahaha G STING!

  • HAHAHA My E string died!! it ain't no joke,..thanks anyway the vid was pretty useful.

    Thanks Brad

  • i find this tuning ok. if your strings brake their rubbish strings!. the only problem i have is this video is to long and boring. i have to make a vid with ought the boring tuition. just pluck each string for 10 plucks and thats it.

  • What do you want, him to dress as a clown or something?

  • Yes. Is that too much to ask?

  • mine broke too.

  • mine didn't. lol and thanx for the vid, I'm also new to the mandoline (but have experience w/ putting on guitar strings...) Julian

  • jesus! mine's just done the same thing,,,,dam

  • Geez I was just tuning and my E string broke!!!!!

  • olol same here xD

    (no joke)

  • u know thats funny i broke mime 2

  • "here's the sound of my G-String" lol

  • Thirty years of playing gigs and there never seems to be an end to "G string" jokes... Unfortunately, I can't post them here... Brad

  • hahaha

  • This was really helpful. I'm new to mandolin and could not tune two of the strings properly, but this really helped. Now I'm pretty sure the strings are fine. Thanks!

  • thx

  • thnx

  • shut up

  • thanks this helps alot since my tuner is missing and my instructional dvd won't work on my computer

  • thnx
