Your book has brought me peace and comfort. Your gentleness shines through in Charlie. Charlie has changed my opinion about coyotes. You're an amazing photographer. I'd love to sit across your table over coffee and chat with you! You have a unique spirit!
Charlie is tame', his parents and littermates were killed and he was given to Shreve to care for. He is also nuetered so he is indeed a pet, but a challenging and interesting one.
What do you feed him? its amazing what you have done, I live in mexico and when I go out hunting to the ranch I get a lot of Coyotes in traps, I love them so much I dont hurt them. Once I came across 2 pups but I could never tame them so I left them alone. What does he eat? This is quite remarkable and I really really think this is something far greater than just a pet coyote. Congratulations!
pretty good movie, especially considering that it's amateur. Very good choice of video for the music, (or vise versa). "Speak For Me" by Cat Power is one of my all time favorite songs.
Charlie is a gorgeous animal! So good to see videos of him on youtube. Shreve, my boyfriend and I are huge fans of DC. You have a beautiful family in him and Eli:)
He looks like a healthy guy (and very handsome!). Coyotes are common in New England, and we get used to thinking emaciated and scruffy is normal, but Charlie's thick coat and stocky body is a picture of what good nutrition will do. Good for you!
It's good to be able to see him run... You capture movement well in your photos, but there's something to be said for the real thing. heh Thanks for sharing... Oh, and I use the leash attached thing OFTEN with our three dogs... it's how I taught two of them to actually BE off leash and come when I call without fail.
Shreve-don't bow under to every dimwit that makes a comment....yikes. You are doing a great great job by raising Charlie and SHARING your experience. I look forward to your daily images...I do wonder what will happen when the big C decides to go cruising for a damsel...that should be interesting. HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL OF YOU CHARLIE WATCHERS!!!
Great snippet! He looks so happy, and I love the way he keeps coming back to you to include you in his playing.
I've noticed that his collar is getting harder to see as his ruff thickens out, especially if viewed from a distance. Would perhaps a harness stand out better? Or even one of those animal-companion vests? Just suggestions! I want him safe too! Good for you for keeping the chain on him to keep him safe; a piece of chain is a lot more humane than a bullet.
Love to see him running through the brush. I figured the chain was helping to keep him from getting shot. I'm glad he has someone looking out for him. Lucky coyote!
Oh, I knew this would be a Big Thing when I was putting the video together; hoped it wouldn't be but I see it is. Sorry if I sound a bit short, I am just getting weary of judgment when no one has any experience with Charlie, a rare few have experience with life in the rural west, and yet so many feel entitled to criticize and judge from their vantage point.
I completely understand the leash. It was actually self-explanatory from reading your blog and knowing how a coyote in full sprint might be killed in your area, but thanks for explaining it once again.
He is gorgeous. What a wonderful thing to see---a happy coyote running to his heart's content. Please post more videos.
(2 of 3) Charlie's leash is a long rope tied to a shorter length of light chain where it clips to his collar. It's chain because he can sever a one-inch thick leather strap in four seconds (I've timed it), his teeth are just so sharp, and though he doesn't have issues with a leash, there have been a few times when he has been frightened where he has gnawed at the leash where it attaches to his collar so he can hide. That is why the top is chain - so he cannot cut through it
While I was videoing him, I kept his leash on because I part of my attention was focused on videoing. He's not tied to anything. He's running with the leash behind him so that I could catch up to him quicker and grab the end of the leash if he took off. You must understand that if he ran off without me by his side, he would get shot from the road. That's not an exaggeration. Aren't there certain places where you have to keep your dog on a leash for his safety? - S.S.
Thank you for explaining the leash bit. Was just curious. Must be stressful to always be worried about who's around the corner. Love your stories. You guys are awesome. I'm moving to NM. Love it out there, would love to see Charlie and the gang... Take care...
@wyocoyote00 I would get an orange hunting dog vest for him. It would be horrible to see anything happening to him and as I live in Wyoming too (wasn't hard to figure out with all the sage brush and your name) I know how they are viewed out here. Never know that vest might save his life!
HE IS SO COOL

you are correct in leaving the leash on.
it's a common technique for big 'dogs'
who like to run off.
ignore the haters, your judgment is sound,
as usual.
lovely seeing Charlie in action. such a spitfire.
great song, too. Cat Power....non, it's Coyote Power now, I think!

I adore Charlie! I'm a little concerned about the chain that he's trailing though. If he got snagged on something he could break his neck!
