There was a great jazz station back in Detroit (105.9) that would play this and other kinds of jazz back in the early nineties. That's where I first heard the likes of Jean-Luc Ponty, The Rippingtons, Peter White, and many others. Sadly, they changed their format to urban contemporary.
Musically speaking, this song is in the key of E minor. So is this one hit that got Miami Sound Machine tremendous exposure, their song "Conga." I often fantasize about a segue between these 2 songs, particularly at the point about 3:27 when the band joins in once again. Come on shake your body in the fast lane. (Incidentally, Life in the Fast Lane by The Eagles is in E Major, another chance for tune building here!)
I was playing this album in high school. When I would tell people I listened to fusion jazz, they would say: "Oh, you listen to confusion jazz?" If only they knew....idiots.
Every Time I hear "In the Fast Lane," It harkens me back to my years living in the San Francisco Bay Area (1982-94). Specifically, I always get this mental image of being aboard a Bay Area Rapid Transit train zooming through the Transbay Tunnel under the Bay between San Francisco and Oakland at 80 miles per hour.
I had the honor of seeing Jean Luc Ponty play at Detroit Masonic Temple and a opportunity to meet him. Very nice, quiet guy. Awesome concert. He got so many ovations they would let him off the stage and he played so hard his bow strings were breaking! EPIC! It was the Gift of Time tour!

Damn! I like every single work from this guy..... One of true musical genius of our times. I see him in concert every time I have the chance, and don't get tired of doing it.
Also they are very recommendable: "Tender Memories" with Grover Washigton Jr. (sax).and my favorite, " After the Storm" with Patrice Rushen in keyborads.
