@ dogfancy53, I'm a white man who's family came from sharecroppers in North Carolina. Funny how bluegrass and poverty bridged the racial divide in the poor south before the civil rights movement.
I love like to listening bluegrass music too. I'm a black woman and can remember my mother listening to bluegrass music when I was a child. My family came from sharecroppers down in North Carolina. To this day I still listen to bluegrass music.
finally we see ole Ralph doing what he does best the tremble in his voice is natural and inflects emotion that portrays the lonely hell a man in prison would've had because back then you didn't get a good meal or cable and you were breaking rocks for less then 3 cents a day
Check out a young Bob Dylan's verson in his first TV appearance in 1963 !! You will see how far back this song goes also. This is Bob before drugs and booze took it's toll on him.
Omigosh I loved this song in O Brother Where Art Thou and it's so cool to hear where it came from. I love learning the history of songs. His voice is great, bluesy, country, blugrass, its all there.
@BNicodemo all genres of music have the roots of their native lands IE.... Irish scot brittish all derive from gaelic roots African-american stlyes include R&B Hip Hop, etc "Chant style rythms. get my point bluegrass is original to america and country derives from it then add big band from gerrmany and other european nations harps are from egyptian arabic lands so can you figure it out ?
his face just adds to the curiosity of this song. wonder where hes been and what hes seen!

This is deeper than the the blues. Bluegrass is uniquely American and like Jazz it is a pure American invention.
