  • Funny that as a human and business owner this have been my motto for a long time from my own research. I am happy to see it confirmed. These training tools are going right into my tool-bag as a leader. Meditation to strengthen focus and teaching why multitasking is bad I already do, the others are new tools I am exited to try. As a leader I put peoples happiness before other things. I want them to be happy with there life. I try to have a positive impact on there lives where I mater and reach

  • Video is 12:21 ..the year is 2012. APOCALYPSE VIDEO!!

  • Shay sent me here!

  • Shay Carl agrees with you, Shawn Achor.

  • also, i think i need to meditate

  • I WANT MY BRAIN TO BE REWIRED TO MAXIMIZE ITS POTENTIAL

  • This video is shit. America is the happiest and most excitable country in the world. They're also in the most debt in the world, which could also be said that they're the least efficient in the world.

It's not all about happiness, although that's a nice way to think.

  • @FakePlasticShrimp According to the UN Human Development Index, Norway is the happiest country in the world (2011).

  • Happiness is a choice, as Shay says.

  • You need to have SHAYCARL on TED as a Speaker!!!!!

  • This is Brilliant!! :)

  • Beautiful. This has to potential to change lives!

  • Excellent work, Great to hear discussion over happiness being less based in the circumstantial and more in our ability to notice and appreciate the elements of our existence that we are already happy about.

  • would this be consider an informative or persuasive speech? :/ persuasive right? ^^

  • I saw this video last week at a work meeting and all of a sudden it shows up in my recommended video list.

  • I didn't get here cuz of shay...I got here from my dad haha he sent it to me but its funny how shay liked it too..

  • AWESOME! thanks for sending me shay!

  • Thanks, Shay!

  • I'm so glad this is on youtube. He came to my company's annual meeting to talk and I've been telling people about it, but it easier to share a youtube video.

  • when he said bobo married amy the unicorn I belt out laughing hahah this guy is hilarious! Usually TED speakers aren't as funny to watch!

  • Shay sent me...happiness is a choice :-)

  • I love TED videos and now I love Shay even more knowing he watches them too!!

  • thanks shay, this guy is awesome

  • You must be a unicorn!

  • Shay Carl sent me. I love this video!

  • Shay Carl sent me

  • SHAYCAAAAAAAAARL! :D

  • SHAYCARLLLLL

  • Shaycarl sent me :-)

  • SHAYCARL!

  • A REVOLUTION!!! (gave me chills)

  • @SHAYTARDS hey brother

  • @SHAYTARDS watchin since day 96

  • Thanks for sharing this insightful and engaging talk about what we can all do to becoming happier.

  • I love this so much I'm challenging myself to make some changes over the next 21 days. Amazing.

  • This is a dangerous talk. Imagin, everybody would take this idea to the heart, half of our economy would break down, starting with advertising agencies.

  • @EquinoxIV That sounds pretty good to me...

  • I love this. I'm going to watch this every time I feel shitty :D.

  • Well damn. I'm bookmarking this.

  • what does he mean by "journaling"?

  • @jciany I think he means like Loging it, such as writing it down in a journal.

  • If every one of the top 10 TED's of all time (and this one is most certainly on that list) were shown to every school-age child, what do you think the effect would be?

  • @andiovanna Carl Sagan

  • Great talk!

  • Beautiful talk. I am grateful for it, Shawn.

  • @milutinkristofic he said it is like the Great Hall, that isn't really a good reason to disregard his ideas

  • @milutinkristofic Bullshit, your comment started with the word "bullshit". That was the moment when I stopped reading your comment.

  • @milutinkristofic That kinda sucks because the video really took off after that part :/

  • Watching second time

  • He talks too fast

  • The first name "Shawn" is humiliating.

  • that was exellent

  • One of my favorite tedtalks thus far. Many mahalos. I agree with majority, if not all of it.

  • I don't think this is such a good talk, though I admit he was funny. I don't see the link between being happy and being successful, the key point of his talk. I know lots of people who are happy all the time, but couldn't get things done, and I see lots of people who are gloomy, but could give good results. Am I missing something?

  • @jamebozo I just want to give my 2 cents for the gloomy bit. Do you have friends who are perpetually stressed in college? If so, then you know that they always get good results (grades). They're stressed and "gloomy" and somewhat successful. (Here's my opinion) But what is the value of success if you're not happy about it.

  • One of the best TEDs ever

  • great video. Doing those 5 things has completely changed my life.

  • @phylliskhare ... you saw this 12 hours ago ....

  • @EIectricEmotions should have been clearer...been meditating for 38 years, been journaling for 7 and using a gratitude journal for 7, too. :-)

  • that was awesome

  • too many jokes

  • @doerrthecricket what a weird complaint. O_O he was entertaining and making his audience happier.

  • This reminds me so much of James Allen's "as a man thinketh" good talk though

  • Bravo!

  • Want to try a 21 day challenge to do daily happiness training? I have started a Facebook group called "Happy and Grateful" where you can poke and get poked by other happiness-seeking people who are taking the challenge. What will happen when millions of happy people become super productive? Can't wait to find out...

  • Great presentation.

  • omg it's like nerd-comedy! lol i love it

  • how much negative behavior do u encounter vs positive in a day? balance that out and u can figure out something u didnt know before.

  • 11:04 for the rewire of the brain

  • @ korvalue: broken arm one week before... broken leg that week...

  • Awesome. B+

  • thanks. now cure my cfs and ill be on my way

  • @dreaminginnoother cfs is an imagined illness anyway.

  • @MusicStudyMan ...thanks man, I guess I'll just stop imagining it now. I hope you never imagine yourself a disease.

  • awesome!!!

    much thanks and gratitude

    PEACE AND LOVE to all

  • Fuck yeah

  • hes fast.

  • GOLDEN!

  • Excellent!

  • I LOVED this Ted Talk! Any time I've operating from a place of happiness, instead of making "happy" a goal, my creativity and list of new ideas go off the charts. Thanks Shawn for reminding me that I can work towards living this way daily!

  • one of the BEST TED TALKS EVER.

  • Can somebody please shoot this chirpy asshole. There are NO _ING JOBS ok? The jobs that are available require a degree I don't have, can't get, have no means of paying for and five years of experience when nobody is hiring entry-level people over 40 but WalMart. Why are people unhappy working at Wallys? Because they're only allowed to use 2 _ing neurons that's why; the rest of them are chanting "please let me die now." Seriously, kill, kill, kill. (just venting, you don't have to call the FBI)

  • @Pangolinx1

I feel your pain. I thought that after graduating college I would get a job right away. What a joke! Many many months later I'm a way-underpaid worker but getting by. Hang in there, keep applying, and try to stay optimistic/happy.

  • right on sir.

  • Excellent information, wonderful sense of humour. Thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this event. Definitely will follow Shawn! Thank you for sharing!

    Kim

  • How eeenteresteeeng...

  • He speaks like Abed from community.

  • @TheCHRM2 OMG! I knew he reminded me of someone!!! ahahhahaha even his pauses.... daw i miss that show.

  • Some relatives of mine used to say, "There's always someone worse off than you."

  • 3 Gratitudes

    Journalling

    Exercise

    Meditation

    Random Acts Of Kindness

  • His cadence reminds me of Daniel Tosh...

  • I am grateful for having watched this video.

  • This guy's prattling style makes me unhappy.

  • good talk, but u americans in the crowd are way too loud, ur way too loud in general, ye need to realise this

  • This TEDtalk emulates Ken Robinson so much... That is why it is going to be huge

  • Aaaaaamen!

  • awesome video ... will give it my best shot. thanks again.

  • 17 people want to stick to the formula work harder > success > happiness

  • WOW - this guy hit the nail on the head. A few years ago I by chance seemed to acquire that formula. After my job finished as an analyst, I wanted a break. I was overweight, decided to go for long walks, about 8 miles. I'd sit in a park, with a river, some wildlife, and just think. Then I'd get my iPhone and text message my friend on whatever I thought, I always give a few pennies to the homeless when they ask. Did this daily for a long time, now I'm described as 'clinicaly happy'.

  • @superhamzah85

Trust me, listen to this man ^^^ find your own niche and ways to apply that advice. Only pick the things that are immediately happy, and don't require work, like running for me, is immediately annoying, whereas for others it may be joyous. Just find the things you like to do to be active, relax and your best thinking spots. My vice is smoking, I like to do it - however I always give people one if they ask so it has it's opportunities I guess - yeah..I just justified smoking. lol

  • Excellent Video...well worth watching...over & over. Saved!

  • I love this man.

  • WANT MOREEEEEE

  • I wish he talked for longer!

  • Awesome talk :)

  • So he helps to make happier workers to get more work done for large corps, including banks? Kind of sucks joy from the talk. Be happy satisfied deluded unicorn cogs!

From his GoodThink, Inc. website: "When the global economy collapsed in 2008, Shawn was immediately called in as an expert by the world's largest banks to help restart forward progress. Subsequently, Shawn has spoken in 45 countries to a wide variety of audiences: bankers on Wall Street, students in Dubai, CEOs in Zimbabwe. "

  • This isn't anything new, but doesn't hurt to hear it from someone else. Reminded me of the philosophies of W. Clement Stone and Normal Vincent Peale who both taught "PMA - Positive Mental Attitude".

  • What a fucking awesome talk.

  • I think i'll watch this movie once more. Too many good ideas to meditate on :) thanks!

  • this was awesome !

  • Wilhelm Reich said: "Love, work and knowledge are the wellsprings of our life. They should also govern it."

  • Excellent talk

  • wow that was informative

  • Wow, this was pretty neat.

  • that's a lot of meaningless, mildly comedic babbling to talk about already well studied phenomenas, observer bias and stress response

  • If you're not happy in the here and now, you never will be. [Taisen Deshimaru ]

  • I want him to do a joint project+presentation w/ Sir Ken Robinson.

  • fun fun fun

  • Lot of fanboys...

  • This guy talks reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally fast

  • we got so inspired by this video we decided to do it.... #21DaysOfGratitude

  • In nature there are three types of state of mind (humans and animals alike),

These are: Positive minds, Neutral, thus, optimum state of mind, and Negative state of mind.

The Positive is Direct Current (DC), the Neutral is Godly (as Creation is), and the Negative is (AC) Alternate Current, a semi-potential and constantly searching for the light at the end of tunnel.

  • @zeroonetime lol

  • Comment removed

  • In other words, smoke weed everyday! :-)

  • @nmryda hahahahaha

  • Omg, he talked 20 words/second.

  • @aonutube ..actually it was 3.549 words a second and it took me a really long time to figure that out so dont make fun of me

  • epicurus, seneca, name any eudemonic ethical system, theyve been talking about this a very long time! I wonder to what grade they would get backed up by empirical data. Is there research done about this?

  • @ATOZBTOURMOMMA or do there systems not match the current work-ethics and are therefore outdated?

  • I can't help but juxtapose this against another video called "Smile or Die" by Barbara Ehrenreich and it sort of takes away from the message that happiness is the key to work. Perhaps there is research that proves this is true, but if that's the case, I want to see it.

  • 13 people are dopamine deficient -_-

  • Shawn, the answer to your research is called cocaine...

  • 10:01 explains the high suicide rate in Japan.

Just try to get to work on time in Tokyo on a Friday. You won't.

Because trains will be delayed by a suicide jumper:

Another sad salaryman who realized that his weekend will be just as unhappy as the last and that all the hard work he did durning the previous week was for nothing...

  • This is why marijuana is a good thing, it inducts dopamina. I have noticed that my friends that smoke weed are happier and more successful :)

  • Now, he is a guy who practices what he preaches!

  • Boss sad to the workers in strike: You are unicorns.

[unicorns means: no boss over your head, discussions and democracy in worker councils, self management, cooperation, mutual help, rotation of boring jobs, no fear of unemployment, homelessness and hunger]

  • Genius!

  • This explains perfectly why I learn more in fun classes than in boring ones. When teachers create a happy environment it makes the learning process easier. Dull environment = blah

  • THAT IS WHAT WE ALL NEED - ALL MEGA SHARE THIS PLEASE!

    Most Important at 9:45 - end !!

BEST TALK SINCE A LONG TIME!

ps: wtf google transcribe the voice to text allmost perfectly o0 this is crazy!

  • absolutely brilliant!

  • This guy could do stand-up.

  • And important foundation of this is mental (emotional) autonomy. It is hard to build an inner framework that diverges from current norms, if you experience negative stress when not aligning yourself with the perceptions and opinions of others. If you can experience positive stress (a 'thrill') about the idea of improving in this divergence, then you've got a good shot i think.

  • damn nasal i can't stand it

  • MBCT

  • Anyone know where I can get teh awesome stellated lamps 0:37 ...designer? ...artist?

  • Damn! this guy talks so fast. Brilliant though.

  • good video by TED in a LONG TIME.

  • is it me or is he just talking about "THE SECRET"

  • Thaw si ihst amn kaltngi ouabt?

  • I didn't laugh once. :|

  • GENIUS! GREAT TALK SHAWN

  • This rings so very true and what my Grandfather would have said, "common sense." Great conversation Shawn. I agree, I don't (and never did) want to be normal, though I thought I did for many of my younger years!

  • I'm so glad he's saying this. I've been trying to tell my family this for years! You can't look at the news as an accurate outlook of the TRUE world. That's why I don't watch the news, they almost NEVER have anything positive to say. I will share this video :)

  • Amazing, i will try it!

  • subtitles please :(

  • @MrWicher hey if you want substitles you can click the description button there is a link that shows you videos of this tedtalks with subs.
