Man, Haters gonna hate. I liked it. But I do agree that they need to have other stuff that is more entertaining to the audience. But just watching them perform at such a high level on such complex music and drill is entertaining to me.
I guess Im one of the ones that don’t UNDERSTAND it! When do they stop warming up and play a song? I thought u were supposed to enjoy it not study it.
@HouseOfLeaves90. Couldn't agree with you more. I mean, it definitely wasn't my favorite of the year. But the amount if depth and complexity in this music is astounding, and it's fun just trying to figure out the technicalities of it all. And besides, The City of Glass is one of my favorite jazz pieces of all time.
It's a shame that a lot of people dislike this show mainly because they don't understand it. A lot of this music is very contemporary and even atonal at times, especially the second half of the program. Yeah, it's tough on the ears, but any music theory virtuoso can't help, but admire the music's complexity. BD just pushed the boundaries on this show and they achieve at doing so even if some of their performers don't understand it.
As a BD ageout, I have to admit... I didn't understand a dam lick of this music. I confess, though, this is the only part of the show that I saw. I hope the rest of the show had some sort of melody. JOHN (Meehan), I LOVE YOU BRUTHA, BUT BRING BACK THE MUSIC!!!!
There is no doubt BD had the hardest music this year and played it superbly, but as someone who has been attending DCI events since 1974, I have never hated a show as much as I hated this one. If this is the future of drum corps you can keep it. I'll just watch my DVDs from the 1970s and remember when it was entertaining. I am not planning on attending the finals in 2011, i would hate to waste another weeks vacation on this crap.
from an arrangement standpoint, this might be the worst show in DCI this year, certainly the worst in the top 5. if you asked me to sing one melody from this show, i wouldn't be able to. i found myself thinking that a high school band would have been a more suitable client for this show. it's painful to see DCI's standards for music drop so low. The Devils kill it every year from a performance standpoint, and that's how they win. they work hard, no doubt, but their arrangers need to step it up.
my favorite part about blue devils show. i can leave early to avoid the traffic and i can grab a hot dog on the way out knowing that i didn't miss anything.
@TheDiddleFinger I totally agree. The problem is that because this horrible, dissonant, obnoxious, nauseating, lame-ass show took first place, other drum corps will mindlessly try to do the same thing in order to win. Apparently Wayne Downey has forgotten how to arrange a fucking melody. Fewer and fewer people are paying to see this kind of shit. If Michael Cesario and DCI don't figure out a way to get drum corps to perform shows that are enjoyable to listen to, drum corps will eventually die.
@moderndaywarriorAZ Look out for my corps this year, Blue Knights. We're performing First Suite in Eb along with English Folk songs and others. It's definitely going to be that old-style, originally entertaining drum corps show that you and so many others are looking for. But as for BD2010, I completely agree with everything said here.
@tennesseetrumpet Thanks! I know the video quality isn't very good (Cheap camera) but the audio isn't too bad, itsuffices I think. Yeah, the Blue Devils gave another great show this year!

@plaetoe This isn't the future of drum corps. Shows like this will eventually cause the demise of drum corps.
