Interesting: young woman headlinging her own act from an excessively conservative State, taking all the blues songs coming her way/oh and here in this video, her being so happy that she sang well, you can see her face drop maybe 50 years to the really young woman she was, and the best was that little skip she did when she thought she was off-camera; such a very human and vulnerable act,
Was that "Mama" Cass Elliot of the "Mamas and the Papas" band sitting in front wearing the dark sunglasses? Janis is awesome, especially considering she was only about 25 years old around this time. She was 27 when she died.
Absolutely; that's Mama Cass. This is from Monterey Pop in the Summer of 1967. John Phillips, the leader of the Mamas and the Papas, was one of the promoters who organized this festival. This vid is actually the encore performance. The first performance WAS NOT filmed. They say it was even better than this. Can you believe it? Too much! Peace.
If you want to,you can hear the 1st performance of this on the greatest hits CD-I think it's called "18 essential Hits:Janis Joplin" And hell yeah,it's a fucking spine tingling performance!
You're right. Big Mama (Willie Mae) Thornton's version is the original, but it is in a major key and is more reflective, but it's totally awesome. Check it out right here on YouTube. I like Janis' version better, but they're both great. Peace.
