"Ponyo is better and larger than life, and it's an absolute perfectly flawless movie made by God himself impersonating a human, calling himself Miyazaki."
You could as well have said that. Dude - stop praising the movie all the darn time. Could you at least TRY to be constructive??
beautiful, in every sense of the word. I don't mind the dub either, I found the english Ponyo (character) quite endearing actually, and since its primarily aimed at kids the dub was a neccessary move. For the older crowd, I'd say view it subbed, although the dub is perfectly fine, compared to something like Whisper of The Hearts dub.
I love this, but all through the movie I was thinking the company disney mde this and that anime should've sued no matter how good it was...woIwas wrong!
Ponyo is an absolute privelage to watch. Your review was stellar; you pointed out every single amazing detail of this wonderful movie. The soundtrack is pretty much the best I've ever heard in a movie and I am disappointed that I can't find most of it online. The animation is gorgeous; after a few watches, I stopped looking at the characters and feasting on the background! Usually star-studded dub casts are just picked for the stars and not the characters but they truly fit their parts! 5 stars!
there's another studio Ghibli movie no one seems to mention probably because Miyazaki didn't animate it. but it is considered to be up there with Bambi and the greats it's called grave of the fireflies and it is by far they're best movie and that's saying something since almost all they're movies are amazing
@PBanimation He's actually macing Porco Rosso 2 sometime in 2012 or around then, though it's very early in production now. I haven't seen the original, though I plan to, because from what I heard it's his best!
i love studio ghibli but im not a fan of princess monoke, i know its weird cause many have this as their top favourite film but i prefer ponyo, spirted away, my neighbour totoro!
Ponyo’s father was a man (also wizard) and her mother was a goddess, making her a demigoddess. Her actions resurrected hundreds, possibly thousands of extinct species; increased the gravitational pull between the earth and the moon, causing the oceans to rise at least a hundred feet flooding countless cities in the eastern hemisphere, and we are expected to believe that there was actually a happy ending? I’m curious to see what happened next. How long until Ponyo gets dissected? Just a thought.
ponyo and the frog and the princess is what gives me hope that the future will bring some great 2d movies again :) (dont get me wrong the 3d ones CAN be good but their generally WAY below the 2ds, maybe because the added time it takes to make them? And the more money invested = more intrest in making it an everlasting pearl). I hope Hayao Miyazaki goes on to live many many years yet and make just as many beatiful movies like this, and that Disney goes back to its roots again :) Back to 2d.
I actually didn't like Ponyo. I saw it for the first time in a Miyazaki marathon, and I liked it the least. It's not a terrible film, but in comparison to other movies by Miyazaki, it wasn't very exciting. It really had no antagonist. There was no real pressure on anything. Aside from the world being destroyed almost being ruined, nothing really happened. It was a very boring movie. Oh, and that five year old is waaay too smart. and kind. 4/5
I have to admit the first time I saw it my expectations were way high, I was looking for something like spirited away or howls moving castle but instead it was very childish and rather senseless, but then it started growing on me and the second time was when I actually fell in love with it, it's so full of magic and it's so beautiful, I realized I was going all wrong about it the first time I saw it
this was by no means Miyazaki's latest film, Tales From EarthSea was. Ponyo was actually made a while back but it's just come to the UK. I love all of Ghibli's films and i can't WAIT to see this one, though i didn't really like Porco Rosso. It was good and all, but a tad bit meh. I liked it, but not AS much as the rest of their films.
Tales from earthsea was directed by goro miyazaki (hayao's son) and was a major fiasco, the movie litrally made me fall asleep, Hayao was right when he said to his son not to make the movie, it was not a hayao miyazaki's film on the very contrary he was almost against it
I just saw this movie yesterday, and I LOVED it. It blew my mind. The animation was beautiful, the voice acting was really good, and overall, I just a lot of fun with this movie! I don't know about anyone else, but Lisa just cracked me up. This had to be the best animated film I've seen in a long time, and trust me, if all you see is CGI movies, you start craving 2d animation again, and this movie help that craving. It gets a 11/10 in my vote.
You learn how to pronounce Japanese names bewtter. You managed to Mess up both Studio Gibli's and Joe's names. Beyond that, you did a fair job and I agree with you 100 percent. Although that Miyazaki has at least one more film in him.
i personally loved this movie, my sister and even my mother loved it
the way you talked about this movie makes even better as it makes me view things in ways i never thought of viewing them, it makes the movie that much more moving
i saw both the english and original version, i would say frankie and noah did well, except for the last credit song, UGH
ty i am so happy i am going to see it with a bunch of my grade 5 budies in my class and i love Hayao Miyazaki's so happy i love his movies yha yha yha lol so happy ty Hayao Miyazaki's ty grate man what a grate mam lol
Excellent review and commentary of Disney animation. Saw the 'English-dubbed' version of Ponyo. Agree with all points mentioned. A must-see film. 9/10.
Now THIS is a good review!!! I can tell a lot of work hase been put into this review. Well don! Every thing u have said is right onthe money and u have explored the movie in great detail. I thought this was a fun movie and the characters where well don as well! Even though the plot began to stray from the point i was smiling from start to finnish!
@cookiebandit18. He's saying the Japanese pronunciation. (POHN-yoh) The disney version changed it probably to make it easier for English speakers to pronounce.
Wonderfully presented and incredibly insightful review! Excellent!! :D
I really agree with everything you say about this film, and I can tell you've really thought about every element in the film in great detail. Fantastic work!!
I have to commend you on an amazing review. While I haven't seen the English dub yet, I have seen the original Japanese with subs and absolutely fell in love. No surprise there. I think that anyone watching this movie is going to really be wowed, because it's so visually compelling. As for the story (I know this sounds cliche), you really have to just allow yourself to see it as though you were a child. Forget your cares and revert back to childhood! It is pure unadulterated magic.
I've seen this movie several times. (Well, the original, none-dubbed version) I'm not sure if I want to see it in English. I'm so used to just reading the subtitles. My kids love this movie. They've never heard it in English though. It's amazing how enthralled the kids are in a movie that's not even in their own language. The pictures tell the story. And the kids use their imagination to fill in the blanks. Nice review though.. Maybe I'll take the kids to see it in english after all.
Dubs are pretty controversial, but I personally encourage them because I'd rather the general population see a supposed "gimped" version than none whatsoever. Call it a gateway drug into foreign cinema.
@JoyfulMommy I can see where you are coming from with this and I would usually agree with you but I just watched the movie in english and the american dub is actually quite good. I usually avoid the english voices but they did a good job on it.
Awesome review. Me and my friends are going to see it today! We are soo excited because we just finished watching Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away. Those are my favorite movies of all time. I hope Ponyo will be as good as them. Hayao Miazaki is my favorite director of all time. His films are AMAZING. Although it makes me sick when a japanese classic is turned into an wannabe animated Disney film. D:
Wonderful review! I enjoyed the little history lesson in the beginning. I recently learned from an animator that worked at Disney that Disney has fallen under new management, and for the first time in 20 years, someone creative is running the company.... and thats why they are making Princess and the Frog. But, srsly, I loved ponyo. Although the animation style was not as complicated as Howls moving castle, or Spirited Away, it was just as beautiful.
Aw, I really hope this isn't his last movie ;(! I LOVE Hayao Miyazaki's movies, and I totally can't wait to go see this!!! Thank you so much for a wonderful review!
I'm not sure if you're doing this video for a school project or something but overall, the video is 5/5. But, your speaking is maybe 3/5. You're not speaking clearly and sound like you're reading from something. You're pretty close to making it right but you just need more experience and research? Sorry if I sound like an ass. Just trying to help you out. Goodluck to you in the future!
