True that tortoises eat weeds and live on mostly vegetarian diets but they have been known in the wild to pick at a dead carcass of an animal...If it's in their way they'll have a good nibble. Their food, their life is about balance as anything can cause them to have shell deformaties, including living conditions, stress and not enough exposure to the light. Also the majority of these tortoises look fine, the main one may have been like that when he got him...

Actually, heh, commercial turtle and tortoise food isn't all that great for them, either. Turts/torts have very sensitive nutritional needs that should include a large variety of natural plants and sparse to none fruits and veggies. NO MEAT not even bugs. Shoot, PEOPLE! Don't get a pet if your not going to properly take care of it. You need to be feeding them lettuce, carrots, ect, not meat products of any type.

Red foot tortoises NEED meat in their diet. They are omnivorous, eat both plant and animal matter.

On the other hand Russian tortoises are herbivores, only eat grass.

@scotlandw8 Someone probably took it, I doubt it would have gotten far. :( I had a turtle who escaped my backyard…and this section was closed off with a miniature fence and a net cover to ward off predators. She got really big and climbed out, pushing the covers away.. The backyard area was really nice too. :< I miss her.

I would suggest posting a rewards notice around your area, and asking for the tortoise back. It might work, and get the father to help!

The problem with Dog food and any meat in their diet is the protein intake which makes them grow abnormally, they will outgrow their shell if this is done regularly.

I fed mine a couple of meal worms a long time ago but I would never make that a regular part of their diet.

As you said in the description if this is a one time incident it is not too bad but you must include a warning to other keepers not to do this.
