After a few months I listened to it again. Closed my eyes, forgot about grey hair and his age ... it's great ! It's incredible great what this man is doing. I know that there are better performances at least by himself. But did you notice the softness of his voice and the deep identification with his role ? Pure beauty ! Wonderful and fascinating ! I love this performance !
Christoff was a great singing actor with a unique resonant voice which sets him apart. His performances had both musical and dramatic accuracy which made him one of the compelling opera stars of his time.
This voice is beyond great....it is a sound which has the power to encompass humanity. Christoff was a unique artist at a time when artists were unique.
I keep listening and my admiration just keeps climbing --disregard my comments I am really talking to myself no one else I know likes Opera (especially my kids) I have orded the CD and it still has not come!!
Christoff was the greatest basso I ever heard--I have heard old recordings of Challiapin but I cannot compare==and though I do not generally care for this kind of Opera Gudenov is an unsurpassed masterpiece!
Impossible to compare voices with the enormous improvement in recording technology, but certainly Christoff was the closest to Chaliapin in interpretation and sensitivity. I loved to hear Pinza, but Christoff is the ultimate Boris (and Mephistopheles) for all time. He in the bass roles and Jussi Björling singing tenor, the others might as well go home. Not true, of course, but I feel like saying it after hearing either one.
I remember a critic writing. Such is the depth of his belief in and commitment to the role that he can justify a range of colours unreachable to the plainer artists. In the production I witnessed he emerge through good basses like Inia Te Wiata and Michael Langdon as doing something more it was beyond singing, It was soul utterance
I culd not agree more; I had the wondrous pleasure of being taken to hear his last Covent Garden performance of Boris. I just wish I might have heard Chaliapine tho I once met an elderley chap who had and his answer to my question of what was he like? produced a smile and response of "you'll never know!"
yes,it's not about countries of course But Boris Christoff makes me feel proud!and it's a good thing actually, don't you thing so?!nothing personal, but he IS A BULGARIAN!!!
I am also Bulgarian. Shame on you! How can you be so stupid to think about nationalism when what is important is the glory of art and talent. Do you think that you personally would be more than what you are when you compare with this giant as Boris Christoff is. The fact that he is said to be Bulgarian does not mean that you could be proud in any way. Do you follow me?!
Can't believe it. This performance of an "old" man is wonderful. I've heard Mussorgsky's "Boris" a lot of times, I've seen it several times... but I never was more impressed than in this sequence. It's only beaten by Chaljapin and the younger Boris Christoff. I'm getting out of words ... so beautiful !
His voice sounds the same here as it did in the 1940s...amazing! A testament to what an exceptional artist Christoff was! An artist that has pasted for all time. Thank you for posting this clip.
It almost defies belief how good he is; not many singers can get this deeply into what they are actually singing about .. for a few mintues he IS Boris Gudonov. Even Chaliapin could not have been better. And the clarity of the Russian is unparalleled.
to holovanov: tell some artist ans singer better than Christoff! volume voice and theatral actor having a huge culture and a daily personnality out of common way of feeling, known only by people who had chance to meet him as it happends to me in the past, interesting himself about what you are doing...
Still wonderful since ever... The best and fine great artist, voice still "sparkilng" after having sung since more than35 years...Christoff great, great even in concert version remain an theatral actor!!!
Divine voice of Boris Christoff purified and exalted...

Christoff is perfection. He is by no means inferior to Chaliapin. They are both equally greatest to me.

This Boris Godunov´s Death scene with Boris Cristoff is as close as one can get to perfection in the divine art of singing...
There is no word to qualify this majestic interpretation, unparalel...
I have listen three times continuously, from begining to end and back, three times... a great lesson in singing...
