Ok, having calmed down from yesterday, I gotta ask you Novril. What do you really think of gems? Because the more I think about them, the more I understand that they can be a good idea if executed properly.
since day one the problems only were: 1.preorder/pay2win/unlock 2.tournament time 3.a shallow solution instead of just making the game and characters interesting at high level by themselves.
A quote I liked about this subject: "Customization is more needed in shallower games. I think fighting games are deep enough that it's better just to have some well polished stuff instead of having a million different ryu variations, most of them unplayable."
@mrmuffinwaffle Grooves and ratio could sure use some balancing but they really were the heart of the game- Since the game is after all "Capcom vs SNK 2" they let you choose between systems of various Capcom and SNK games. (also SF/SS=one char games. KOF=team of 3)
"How would Cammy play if she were in a Samsho game?" "How would Kyo play in a SFA?" That's the whole point of CVS2.
But the gems just feel like a tacked on marketing idea for the mainstream crowd.
@novriltataki I agree with you that dlc gems are a stupid idea. But we still know very little about them. In fact, IIRC in a recent interview, Capcom said that the gems all would have the same boosts, just different methods of activating. For all we know, DLC gems could have ridiculous activation methods like "land 50 jump attacks". Outside of dlc gems, if executed properly, the gems could really work well. Characters with really bad matchups could adjust the gems to help them with it. (con)
@novriltataki I unfortunately never bought AH3 (due to lack of money), but from what I've heard, aren't gems somewhat similar to the Arcana system? Gems are looking to be an evolution of the already custimazation we've had in some fighters. CvS2 and it's groove system helped balance the game (not saying it was perfectly balanced because it wasn't), and going off of a friend whom I trust in FGs, Arcanas helped balance AH3 as well. Who's to say gems won't do the same?
@elementpollo I've already stated numerous times that dlc gems suck, but like I also said, at least wait until more information comes on them. DLC gems could very well end up as trash, and overall, gems may be able to balance the game better.
Wanna know what's paradoxical? Why are people giving a flying fuck if they dismiss the games so severely? If you don't think Game X is good for tournaments then don't host it.
Apparently people think it's still good for tournaments though because people still play it. Fine by me, I don't play in tournaments.
Oh yeah, and Capcom still makes money from gimmicky games, so it's a win-win. Preach the "Monroe Doctrine", if you will; leave them alone and maybe they'll keep leaving you alone.
i love how the fighting game scene has been reduced to bitching and whining about new shitty games yet they are played because there's no choice. sucks dick.
Fighting games will never be esports at this rate. Although fun and competitive the scene is too loose and open. Plus the games are getting simpler and simpler(capcom games atleast)
When everyone is skeptical on gems and tourneys have banned them before the game is released, Capcom should NOT go ahead keep them as a core mechanic. Capcom has constantly been going downhill lately. They've refused to listen to their hardcore fans. All they care about is their damn paycheck. And the sad part is, Evo is still going to host primarily Capcom games. I hope other FG developers don't follow Capcom's path.
Don't worry guys once the hackers crack the code needed to add new characters in SSf4 AE for the pc tourney owners can just stream what would be 3d MUGEN with online play instead.
@SOLIDOLDSNAKE1 Sad part is, those companies barely have a community outside of Japan to tell them that their game is good. Capcom at least has a community outside of Japan to tell them that their games sucks balls. The paradox continues.
It's a bad thing because Capcom acknowledges the tourney scene and DOES take advice from them. So when they realize that Wesker is awesome and Hsien-Ko suck, the solution is not to barely give Hsien-Ko anything and to slightly nerf and actually BUFF Wesker. When the fans cheer in happiness because SFXT has no comeback mechanic, the solution is NOT to add one. And in this rather crucial moment, when everyone
This, this is both a good and a bad thing. The good thing is, by NOT catering solely to tourney players, Capcom can do the most important thing: Make sure it's fun. Sometimes it seems like people in the FG community forget that IT'S JUST A GAME. It's made for our entertainment, and we shouldn't get all pissy just because Capcom decided to put Cole in SFXT.
Right now Im relatively new to the Toronto scene, and it seems like even figurehead OG's will promote the fuck out of games, even if they think they are bad competitvely. Thats where the problem is, the community realizes the faults of these games but give them top exposure at tournaments anyways, which makes no sense.
(Cont'd) as party games. Taking a game seriously and actually trying to win was a new concept to me in the past. Then I played 3rd Strike and I found myself doing so for 3rd Strike. But SF4 and SSF4?(I didn't buy, and never will buy arcade edition) I'm basically the Zangitroll without the hitch of eventually trying to win.
I am not capcom's bitch. I never will be. I didn't buy MvC3 either, and I won't be buying UMvC3.
By the way, thanks for the tip about the good games.

I haven't been on the scene that long, but I sure wish I would have. I would have loved to experience fighting games as the super turbo, third strike, and guilty gear veterans have. Sadly, I don't have that luxary. If I join the scene now, I'll just be bombarded by gimmicks. I'm not a hater, I like SF4 and it's iterations...(cont'd)
Oh man, you mean Melty Blood and Doujin Fighter #328? I can't WAIT to play those games! Forget those idiots at Capcom trying new things, THESE people actually know what they're doing! That's why they're still making those same great games today, right?
@omgcandy16Kimicari0 Is this a trolling attempt? Capcom isn't trying new things to elevate the genre to new heights. They try new things to make it more casual, damaging the high level play in the process.
Instead of relying on gems to give you forced, artificial diversity, how about you just make a diverse cast with truly unique characters (e.g. guilt y gear) instead of having 7 shotos in your games?
I see. Well then, carry on with ABLOO BLOO CASUAL SHIT IS RUINING FIGHTAN crusade against Capcom, I'll be playing 3rd Strike, trying to shut out the thoughts that '7331 players only' fighters are what killed the genre.
@SuperUltimateLoser I give priority to games that also have good online play and I'm not optimistic about KOF13 when it comes to online quality and you are welcomed to PM me after it comes out if it's surprisingly good.
The stuff all the players without the mind of sheep already knew, but the rest of the community refused to acknowledge. We all know SFxT, MvC3, etc are bad tournaments games, full of flaws we shouldn't have deal with on a fundamental level, and the company refuses to fix, even with the ease of DLC updates. Yet, this country will bow anyway, and SFxT will show at majors and tourneys because people are just that fucking stupid.
