  • The reason they have to make 2 attempts is because the judges take the mean speed of both. It's my understanding that on the return trip he didn't wait for the wave from the first run to subside, and it hit his boat after it'd rebounded off the shore with enough height to bring the boat up.

  • Marillion wrote a song about this.

  • Ive lost it....gone

  • Ouch, that's one of the nastiest crashes you'll ever see. @JAMamation the body was found/recovered in 2001.

  • shes going to run again some time this year

  • um why is this for over 18s?

  • History channel sent me here.

  • He almost nailed it.

  • boy it takes some real fuckin guts to pilot a craft skipping across the water at 300mph!

  • he hit the water so hard he disintegrated instantly :/ at least it was quick and painless. R.I.P. legend. died doing what he had a passion for.

  • @JAMamation no, they found his body in 2001

  • @Hemanisgay

funnily enough, i looked it up as soon as i wrote this and found it out, but i couldnt be bothered to put a comment again, so yes, that is very true. :)

  • @Hemanisgay yep but his head still missing.. as he hit the water the boat split behind him... this where he may lost his head there before engine catapult 7 times .it either the whiplash or beheaded cause him to lose head in the crash

  • @JAMamation the faster you go ..the boat will skate on water ...the air get under hull force it lift boat in air will and come down and slammed like concrete wall to break boat all bit pieces .

what i heard that Campbell was pushing 400mph before it flips

  • @001whitelighter

yep, he was basically hitting concrete at that speed, although i did some research and read his body was found in the early 21st century. can't remember what year it was though.

  • Legend. RIP DC

  • it's true they never found his body

  • @BeefUnion In 2001 they fetched his boat and two months later also his body up.

the boat they now are restoring with mainly the original parts, and it should work again ;)

  • I didn't mean for everything I meant for stuff like this and stuff that you wouldn't be able to do in real life. And if there was a video game that lets me experience lets say war and I don't want to join the armed forces then why do something I don't want to do when I can get an idea of the experience from my living room or computer? I'm just saying for the things average people cant do why not do it in a video game? And I weigh 98 pounds and I'm 4 ft 11in I'm not even close to being over weight

  • R.I.P bro, today we were talkink about you in our school watching this vid :)R.I.P

  • this is what happend when it happend. the k7 was going faster than it was designed for the front lifted then went down 2 times on the 3rd the engine cut out there was nothing keeping the boat down and then it flipped

  • I swear that guy was in the game Hydro Thunder

  • @brainkillz Is that supposed to be funny? or are you just another random full of useless information?

  • @drweelz

Neither. I'm totally serious. His boat looks just like the boat Banshee on Hydro Thunder

  • @brainkillz video games are a waste of time, therefore your comment useless information

  • @drweelz

Well in my eyes i would rather play a video game than (no offense) die doing the real thing. Video games can open up new opportunities to do things you would or couldnt do in real life. I mean who doesnt want to hook a bike to the back of a plane and take off with it then free fall back down and parachute to safety? You can do that in Just Cause so I think video games are awesome

  • @brainkillz

I agree, video games are awesome. But to say they're better than experiencing the real thing just sounds like something someone who's 300lbs overweight would say. A video game about sex would be cool, but is it better than the real thing??? I'm going to say FUCK NO! Unless your 300lbs overweight, in which case no one wants to fuck you anyway, so have at the video games.

  • @brainkillz It's time for all the video geeks to shut the fuck up or make your own youtube video. This video is for speed freaks. If you're into TV and video games, go to another page.

  • :( R.I.P

  • i just watched a guy die . sad really..

  • 328 mph - Jet engine cut out. Without the thrust, he flipped. He went 15 ft in the air, then hit the water at 180mph.

  • Donald Campbell...The Speed King. From a bygone era, when being British meant something. Like his father Sir Malcolm Campbell, Donald was a legend and a national hero.

  • I agree with canals22 .. this world needs proper heroes .. people to look up to and respect ..

(not some footballer who scored 20 goals last year ( 10 of which were between the legs of starstruck or money strapped girls) ..

these people may have been wealthy , but , had a spirit of adventure which is lacking now ..... give the man respect ... they found his body in 2001... over 300 mph on water .. and it hasnt been beeten yet

  • These were real men in those days, dealing with the unknown. They didn't have the benefit of computer aided simulation, nor enyone else that "had been there before"

Today, everything is much safer, there's a wealth of knowledge available, that's whe we see all kinds of people attempting "dangerous" things in search of fame.

Back in those days, only heros did it...

A big applause for Donald Campbell, his crew, and England.

I'm so glad they tried... because they gave me priceless memories.

  • I know this might seem like a complete lie but i am actualy related to him. Hes my mothers mothers uncle. Some of the things they recoverd is a tedy bear, which was his mascot. He was the only man to hold both land AND water speed records. How fantastic. Shame that he died in that horrific crash, hopefully instantly but atleast he died doing the thing he loved!

  • Next time don't have all that guilt-ridden preamble and just say you are related to the guy because it comes off as if you are desperately trying to convince us as though we really give a shit. Just helpin' ya out.

  • @CodeySucks ok ..so that makes him your great great uncle..!! thank for the info..

  • @cleanmyroomornocar What a disgusting euphemism.

  • @cleanmyroomornocar That should read "You're a piece of shit...". What does "ae" stand for? Were you trying to say "eh"? You're not very intelligent at all, are you?

  • @cleanmyroomornocar Again, rampant lack of capitalisations. "That's" also has an apostrophe in it. The reason I wanted to "bag" your "thought" on the subject was because it was a disgusting, disrespectful thought. "God called him home"? Get the fuck out of here, man! You can't honestly think that was appropriate?

Oh, and for future reference, the word you were looking for was "P-A-T-H-E-T-I-C".

  • @cleanmyroomornocar "No-one cares", yet you still felt the need to comment? You're even dumber than I thought. Time for your milk and cookies... I think God is calling you away from the internet.

  • @cleanmyroomornocar I'm not even going to read what you said in your last comment, and I'm not going to reply after this. All I'm going to say is that your "God called him home" comment was utterly retarded and that everything you've said since then have done nothing but display your total stupidity. Feel free to reply, but I won't read it. You're an idiot and I'm wasting my time on you. Thankyou and goodnight, much love!

  • this is bad thing

  • Pretty funny how people have rated this "Awesome."

  • They never recovered his body?

  • body was recovered in april 2001 and the funeral was on sept 12th 2001 and he was laid to rest in coniston graveyard

  • Yes, that is right. DC`s remains were as you say discovered, but minus his head! The autopsy showed that Campbell`s skull and neck took the full initial impact of his fatal crash.

  • Comment removed

  • Amazing footage. Bit of trivia, My mate had his car towed away by the same trailer they used to transport the recovered Bluebird.

  • he wasent in his speed boat they found his bout 30 years after the crash and 2 years ago they fond his body ive beeb and got the tour around

  • at 300mph you dont even have to float to be on water.

  • There's a version of this with Campbell's radio communications during the disaster. As the nose lifts he says "I'm going..".

The guy probably knew he was about to die.

    Chilling.

  • @EASYTIGER10 i know, ive heard it...its kind of creepy, but emotional that he basically sed he was going to die

  • Comment removed

  • Sorry, but that's bollocks!

  • They couldn`t have the boat breaking the surface with him sitting in it...The Sun had a photographer there, imagine that on the front page!!!

  • i live near the lake whoo

  • Coniston Water is in Cumbria, England and is part of the ''Lake District'.

Jeez, some of you lot will argue over anything!

  • "Jeez, some of you lot will argue over anything! "

Oh yeah? Want a fight about it?

    LOL

  • He he he he!!! :D

  • "Lake Kanniston" ..aagh! Stupid bloody 1960s seppo anchorman .

It's Coniston Water (and that "Water" not "wah-durr")

    ;-)

  • i know i just sent a comment but the bluebird k7 did not explode it disintgrated.

  • i ve been to the lake it crashed at

  • The Speed King. So proud to be British..proud of his father Sir Malcolm. A bygone era, never to return. Pleased that after 40 years his remains were found still trapped within Bluebird and that he was afforded a christian farewell..

  • I've been reading up on the story: I grew up in Scotland but live in NY now. Just wondering, did his father found the greengrocery chain? I visited Coniston Water with my grandparents as a young child, but don't remember this story ever being talked about. What a brave guy!

  • I agree, father and son both very brave and both Champions. I am not aware of any connection with the greengrocery chain. Malcolm Campbell`s father was connected with the London diamond/jewelry trade.

  • @TheWhitehall Thanks for the info :)

  • Call the lone ranger !

  • if ya listened it said ENGLAND at the start

  • americans are so stupid. they can't pronounce coniston properly and the boat did not explode, it shattered on impact

  • probably the best place in England, nice scenery, some of the nicest scenes in the world in the Lake District

  • RIP CAMPBELL

  • did he died?

  • No, he just lost his head, nothing important.

  • @Jvct3579 tosser

  • yeah

  • dude he did

  • Rest in speed Campbell...

  • Campbell's last words on his final run were, via radio intercom: Pitching a bit down here...Probably from my own wash...Straightening up now on track...Rather close to Peel Island...Tramping like mad...er... Full power...Tramping like hell here... I can't see much... and the water's very bad indeed...I can't get over the top... I'm getting a lot of bloody row in here... I can't see anything... I'm going.... oh

  • r.i.p.

  • check out ken warby to see how its done he built his boat in backyard for under 10 grand out of plywood and fiberglass still holds record 30 years later aussie hero....

  • OMFG! We wer learnin bout dis in skool! Its lyk sumthin off a movie!

  • i actually had to sign in to come and tell you you are a disrespectful tool........speed and a tragic death...jesus man. boring?

  • a man died doing something that takes more balls than powering on your playstation kid.....show some fucking respect.

  • i'm done.....r.i.p campbell! glory is forever.

  • w.e

  • what a prize spastic and cripple you are. your nothing more than a piece of shit on my shoe.

  • Agreed

  • @jsmith1257 Well said!

  • Agreed. And you need to pay more attention in English.

  • Comment removed

  • That wasn't a reference to Campbell

  • You a prick for making a comment like that.

  • did you even understood what i said, are you missing a brain or somethin ha ..heh

  • ha...heh???....why do you think you got 4 thumbs down for prick

  • No pricks like you leaving sad comments about people being killed, twat

  • No he got killed in the boat,he didnt kill himself, you fuken prick you talking bullshit

  • well he died chasing a dream

  • A little quote from Die Another Day There.

  • Death stopped him?

    Now there's a surprise...

  • Cunt

  • Show some respect.

  • The band Marillion recorded a song called "Out of This World" in 1995 that references Campbell's crash. The song features recordings of Campbell's last moments. The band was instrumental in gathering interest in recovering Campbell's body in 2001, and yes, his body was relatively well-preserved in the icy water.

  • this happened in 1967 and they recovered his body in 2001????? he must have been preserved somehow down there.

  • A combination of the cold temperature and the preservative qualities of the lake bed at Coniston contributed to the apparently, well preserved remains. However, they never recovered Campbells head. It's worth doing the Campbell historic boat trip if you ever go there.

  • ill bet you 10 to 1 he was decapitated in the crash, and thus his head is probably some distance from where they found the body.

  • That's what is believed to have happened. They did recover his leather flying helmet (minus his head) in the water after the crash though.

  • @thedrumdoctor he didnt get decapitated at impact tho...as he sed his final words whist he sank...

  • The Coniston tour guys reckon he did, but I guess we'll never know exactly. It's quite a common thing to happen in high speed motorbike accidents. Gruesome, but it does happen.

  • @thedrumdoctor yeah, ive heard about stuff like that...just wondering, but do u know if animals liv in that lake?

  • Apparently, there's plenty of trout, eel, perch and huge pike. Don't know if there are any otters though.

  • this is gonna sound so, so odd...but maybe the animals ate his head...sounds very far fetched lol

  • i was their 3 days ago canoeing

  • what a hero! his return journey was around 320.nice one

  • another few feet of rotation and he would've been perfectly fine.

  • Not really, at those speeds there's no difference between hitting water and hitting concrete. There was no surviving that crash.

  • this is apparently the transcript from campbells radio during the run upto the crash.

"Pitching a bit down here...Probably from my own wash...Straightening up now on track...Rather close to Peel Island...Tramping like mad...er... Full power...Tramping like hell here... I can't see much... and the water's very bad indeed...I can't get over the top... I'm getting a lot of bloody row in here... I can't see anything... I've got the bows up... I'm going...oh...."

  • RIP

  • I Can't see much, the water's very bad indeed... I'm getting a lot of bloody row in here... I've got the bows up... I've gone

in relation to the comment below.

  • try and find the video without the commentary, and that has the recording of his radio to his comunications, its chilling to hear his last seconds, i believe he says somthing along the line of "im going i can feel it going..." just before it flips. a true pioneer of the engineering past

  • This happens in all boat racing there is 3 waves produced from driving down the run and if u hit the 1st one wrong the back-end of your boat will hit the 2nd then u will not hit the 3rd u will be in mid air just like donald cambell

  • The comment below is perfectly right i also go for records on conistion water but last year a forula 2 driver did exactly the same was going out for his run down conistion and he hit his own wake and went over backwards but since `Donald Cambell` died there has been safety cells made in to boats so they stay safe if Donald Cambell had one at the time he would off survived ! !

  • Take a look at the bluebird project online. All the info about the crash and the rebuilding of Bluebird is there. I believe he ran into his own wash and once the boat was airborne nothing could stop it.

  • I love the phrase "when death stopped him!" Sounds like a public service broadcast:

Beware! Water-speed record breaking is dangerous and can jolly well hurt if you crash!

  • the boat crashed due to the engine cutting out. they had just fitted a new engine in bluebird ( saphire engine i believe) and were having problems with it cutting out. As it hit a wave on the return run the lack of frust couldnt keep the nose down look when it takes off the engine is not running

  • it wernt the wave ov the lake dat crashed him it was his speed, he hit 1 ov his waves when he came back down to get the record

  • Ah... the histrionic orchestral score... the perfect soundtrack to Man's folly...

  • who doesn't want to die for his dream ???? i would

  • upside down and hard...ouch

  • he shouldve waited for the water to settle

  • Yes, an absolute hero - more than the likes of the England footy team could ever, ever be.

  • and death stoped him....and a humanbeeing is gone... Why? for 300 mph...said.

  • I think it was in 2001 what a legend!!!

  • His body was recover from the lake in 2000 I believe. The only man EVER to hold BOTH the land AND waterspeed record.Beat that!

  • How can this be? If so the body has been in the water for 30 years now, the body would be no more after all this time?

  • There's very little oxygen at those depths and the water temperature is 4 degrees C. It's quite possible for remains to survive that long down there provided the scavengers don't find them.

  • RIP
