Yeah, I like this old look for the guide better than the guide animations in the new movie. and the whole way of representing a galactic war as an early 80s arcade game is just hilarious.

Not exactly stop-motion, (which means models of some kind), but certainly done mostly by hand.

There's a good web page on it somewhere if you go looking. It was done by Rod Lord, and he got the gig pretty much by accident.
