You have said what causes turbulence but not so much as what it is.... On a diagram its basically shown as little curling lines (air flow) that look out of place.
Different types can include cavitation and wind sheer or tailwinds.... Just depends but yeah i think youve nailed it =)
its very dangerous during landings it can tragically effect your line of heading and how your landing gear is facing but in the "air" its actually not that dangerous but scary indeed
