How deep of a cut do you take on each pas of the jointer? Does this vary from one project ot species to the next?. Just found the Channel, and I'm really enjoying your videos. Thank you!
@meestajack You are correct. It depends on the species and what kind of finished surface I need. But I always feel it best to go light on the passes to get a better cut with less wear on the knives. I think I did a much better job of explaining milling lumber and reading grain direction in one of the videos in the Plywood Box Series. Thank you for writing and I am glad you have found some information of value. Keep in touch. Allan
Take the board to 3/4 for us. Also, what width of board is safe to push through the table saw w/o a push stick? My thumb is 7/8 so I can get away with 1 3/4. Keep the vids coming! The young wood workers are a watching!
@WalterSLane@WalterSLane I generally use push sticks on anything under 4". I just find it less fatiguing mentally and physically to not reach so far over the saw. I have a drawer on my saw that has about 7-8 different sticks right within reach. When I was just learning woodworking I had a friend who mangled his left thumb on the table saw. He is an incredible woodworker but his style on the saw was really reckless. It had a profound impact on me on how to approach this machine.
The planer is a Hitachi p100f 12" which is one of the best engineered machines I have ever seen. Mine is almost 25 years old. I think one of the reasons it has held up so well is that I never let the knives get dull, so the structure and motor have had very little strain and vibration. I have done bearing overhauls twice. The jointer is an 8* grizzly that is older than the planer. It just keeps running on all original parts. Thanks again for the comment.
