  • That snake must have a good sense of time.

  • Anyone else notice Jar Jar Binks lurking in the background?

  • Jar Jar Binks!!!!!

  • Has anyone heard about some of the exercise programs that try to use "muscle confusion"? I think this would fit in quite nicely! Haha! :D

  • What does it matter whether he blinks or not. hes there to teach drumming

  • @cleface123 exactly. fuckin jealous faggots

  • pet snake!!!!

  • awesome

  • yea jus said that on another vid bout the blinking

  • 5:19 and 5:26 - did the snake move to the beat?!?! headbanging snake :D

  • I love how he has Jar-Jar just chillin there.

  • i love his accent hahaha

  • Haha he screwed it up right at the very end

  • sweeeeeeeet snake

  • this kind of exercises suck when you don't have your kit at home...

  • @pais345george These exercises are better played on a practice pad

  • This guy is awesome, great technique and power.....SO FUKING WHAT IF HE HARDLY BLINKS.....GET OVER IT!!!!!

  • haha i never noticed the dude from star wars behind Roddy.lol jar jar binx or what ever.lol

  • i honestly think i would die if i did this.

  • Hey I can play this exercise no problem. Double bass drum playing in garage bands must have made this easy. I wish I knew about these exercises in the 1990s.

  • @ToxicWastoid Fine. And?

  • that snake wants to eat him.

  • yes ! & thanx!

  • tip. just listen to an ipod. use ur sticks to get the timing going for 170 or what ever. and you should be able to just feel the bars so ur not getting confused with the timing of what ever ur listening too. or watch a cooking show, read a book HAHAHA

  • those exerizes are fuckin borging, but holy crap, they work awsomly

  • a coffin for a stick bag? thats the greatest thing ive ever seen in my life! haha

  • His snake gotta be nuts about that lessons!! Poor animal!! :)))

  • shame they're deaf

  • They are.. But not blind.. :)))

  • I just totally realised theires a snake in the back ground

  • somebody! anybody! where can i get that practise set or the components to make it

what is it? i've looked already but no search i've found yields good results. i recognize some of it but all good advice welcome

  • @queenmcsleaze try musicians friend . com

  • same here w/ my left. fucking non dominant lol

  • I love your Snake.

  • i love your innuendo XD

  • Ololz. x)

  • Thats what she said :)

  • im playing this at 130 atm...just because my right hand and left foot say, are a little uncoordinated when it comes to a single stroke between them...great exercise man!

  • Great exercises!Thanks Derek.:)

  • has anyone else noticed he never blinks?

  • Yeah he does, at 0:44. But it is kind of freaky how infrequently he blinks.

  • Or you blinked when he did because i saw him do it lots of times

  • @TheSmokingDrum I guess he plays in a moist environment hehe

  • @TheSmokingDrum yes, probably use the single stroke roll also for that, he close before one eyelid then the other so fast that we do not see .. ha ha ha ha ha

    however, great derek great!

  • @TheSmokingDrum I cant put atention 'cause i laught for that and now i see i'm not the only one ja!!

  • @TheSmokingDrum he blinks as fast as his drumming that it is not that easy to see, put the video on slow motion. lol.

  • @TheSmokingDrum good.very important

  • @TheSmokingDrum haha yea that is pretty wierd. Probably cus hes playing so fast all the time and is always focused or something

  • @TheSmokingDrum I think he's reading his lines next to his camera or something.. you can see he's looking a bit to the right of the cameralens. awesome lesson btw

  • OMG!!! its jar-jar binks

  • jar-jar blinks ha! :D

  • If you start at 100bpm you wll quickly master that and then you can increase the tempo.

  • damn his videos are amazing, respect.

  • goddamn this is fucking hard and he does it almost perfectly. I could execute it at like 10 bpm lol

  • Comment removed

  • I can't understand.. for example, when it's right hand left foot: is it right hand and then left foot or are they at the same time? It's too fast..

Hope that doesn't sound incredibly stupid (probably does)

  • He is playing a single stroke roll between 2 limbs, not hitting both limbs at the same time. Its a real pain in the ass, I've been trying to speed it up without my right hand playing with the kick and its failing lol

  • it's right hand then left foot. He's not playing them at the same time, even though it seems. If it's too fast at 170 u just gotta slow the tempo, cuz it seriously hurts when ur not in control.

  • thanks dude

  • They are not at the same time, they are one after the other.

  • some people seem to get annoyed with all the time and practice you have to put in but i acually find it fun

  • those people aren't musicians. any musician knows that to get better at their instrument (especially as good as Roddy is) they need to work their asses off to do so. anyone looking for shortcuts should definitely never try playing death metal drums

  • Or shouldn't play at all for the most part.

  • Lol, he kinda talks like a robot :P

  • does anybody know what kind of practice kit that is?

  • Derek Roddy \m/

  • hes a good teacher =)

  • yea just go really slow and watch tv or distract yourslef with something else. so you dont have to concentrat on it when you play drums.

  • are those snakes in the brown box or what???

  • yes i think so^^ in the 3rd video the yellow snake was movin all the time xD^^

  • Yeah they are he breeds snakes.

  • Comment removed

  • I can't do it !!

    It's too complicated O.O

  • keep trying

i remember i couldn't do it for shit and i was like "fuck it", but i didn't give up

it took me about a year and a half to master it and now i've been doing it for three years and it's the most easiest thing in the world to me now

    all it takes is practice

  • it's not complicated just really fast

  • It's a very basic exercise but really hard to execute

  • it's funny to see how easier it is to do after a while though

the concept behind it is simple but its rather difficult to even begin with it..

the only thing that bothers me is the amount of time you have to put forth in order to even get mediocre at these techniques

  • dude he is talking so behind the camera :P

  • hey dumbass, who cares, im sure hes better than you, so fuck the fuck off

  • I don't think it's being uneducated at all. He's just giving an analogy that his audience will adhere to. Describing it like that also gives the idea of how this exercise applies practically on the drumset. Often when students are taught an exercise, regardless of what genre/instrument they play, they have thoughts like "why am I doing this?" and "what's the point?". If you can keep them grounded in the practical application of the exercise they may be more inclined to actually do it.

  • Well said mister.

  • I've done this exercise for 2 months, I hated it so much so I stopped doing it. :D

  • It's funny, If you listen closely to any of the left hand excercises, his bracelets will jingle. excellent endurance, and hand foot coordination excercises though

  • yah he can do every single technique in the book, his double bass techniques are fuckin flawless

  • its like he's reading from a script

    good lessons tho

  • i think he is looking at himself in the camera screen?

  • Nice Jar Jar doll, Derek

  • you're retarded. these vids helped me from hardly being able to play flast at all to being able to play 3 times as fast as before

  • hey got a problem...i can blast with my right hand but not with my left as my right is stronger..plz tell mehow to build up my left hand so that i can blast AS FAST as my right.ty

  • I'm not derek, and I'm not as strong as he in drums lol, but I think you should simply go slower with the hand you have problems, and practice more than what you practice with the hand you don't have problems. Of course, when you feel comfortable at a tempo, up it a little bit and restart to train. By doin that, you will get stronger with the hand you had problems.

I'm sorry, my english is really poor!

  • Derek Roddy is in youtube, he is "MrObsidian" ;)

  • I know, I just gave him a tip ;)

  • I can see how this would help more endurance and help with alternating strokes between hands and feat. But, and Im being serious, if you want some REALLY awesome hand/leg independence, learn Jazz. It helps so much! I love playing rock, that's my primary style, and I was good at it, but ever since I started learning jazz, my ability to play better fills (in rock) and better beats is amazing! Learn Jazz, it will help u no matter what style u play.

  • ...and it sounds really cool!

  • Derek Roddy is amazing. The snake is awesome too. And if you look you can see Jar-Jar-Binks behind Derek in the background too.

  • Great drummer. Plus a snake.

  • Wow! This was the hardest exercise for me. I had to slow the right hand left foot combination down all the way to 130 bpm, and I have been playing for 15 years. LOL!

  • check out his snake in the background.

  • Have a snake in the red box????

  • Yup

  • i dident notice the snake befoer in the end of this part :P

  • no chance :D

  • thats really difficult

  • This is just crazy hard. its really hard doing left fot and right hand.

  • If this is to help with blasting and independence etc, wouldn't you want to lead with your feet instead of your hands?

  • yea you,re right, but it still helps

  • in the end of video he is out of time... but don't worry, is good!

  • yea he did get pretty off time on the left hand /left foot part, but he's still a beast.

  • idd guys, you can learn from him

  • man! you kick ass!!

  • omg amazing playing

BUT look in the back round :P

hes got a ja ja binks figureen from star wars :P

  • ok, 4 god sakes everyone whos like *OMG theres a snake behind him1!!!!* grow up! theres nothing wrong with that! i have a ton of snakes and drum so i would know(im not trying to sound like a smart ass) but derek, i would not recomend practicing near them, the vibrations are not good 4 them lol awesome practicing

  • dude that snake looks scary!!!!

  • sICK!!!!

  • so that way u can be more flex-i-ble whene ever it comes to using you left foot, have u ever tried just using your left foot it not that easy so i would suggest u try it some time try starting your double bass with your left and practice with your left its just more for you to know how to do

  • i play my one footed blasts like that

its way more comfortable than playing right foot right hand

and when people see you play they are like WOW HOLYN SHIT he plays his blast realy weird

  • deadly stick bag

  • lol the snakes to his right gotta be thinkin "dude, cant you shut the fuck up, or at least play somewhere else? these vibrations are shakin around all my shit and its gettin on my goddamn nerves!"

and thats when they bite him the next time he goes to feed them.

  • I think they suffer even more from the 100 WATT FULL TUBE MARSHALL Stack next to them ;)

  • hah lol

my hamster did with just drumming lmao xD

  • i had cobras, i know have axis, if you can afford it then axis are really really good, there better than cobra for shore

but there is a big price difference, if your serious about your double bass then it is worth the money

  • damn! That was a workout for me!

  • Is that a jar-jar action figure in the background?

  • Haha, I think it is.

  • haha how the hell did u see that!?

  • LOL!!!!!!!!!SHIFT1111!!!

  • This man is a king :) thanks

  • lol it's that "yar yar binks" from star wars the thing he has just at his back? :p

  • I got a Tama swingstar double bass kick and i rock the cobras man. I have got the Powerglide bodies with the P900 cams. deffinaley recommend the gibraltor red apple beaters too that is if you like a little weight

  • i have good millenium double pedals. working good

  • do you guys have any suggestions on a good pedal to get? and good heads too? I have an iron cobra, it don't know if maybe a 9000 or 5000 would be better?

  • keep the iron cobra dude, thats about as good as it gets

  • I have the 5000's. I love them. Never tried the iron cobra, though. Go to a musicstore and try them :) You'll never know until you do so :) You shouldn't ask people what they think are better. You should try for yourself, cause every drummer has a different taste.

  • i have the 5000. its great for me, no adjustments needed right outta the box. but ive played an iron cobra also and they are nice to. different beaters can give a completely different feel for a lot less money.

  • Get Axis pedals if you can afford them. Loads of the best death metal drummers use them, check out the album credits of bands like Deeds Of Flesh, Spawn Of Possession, Odious Mortem etc

  • yeah seriously keep the cobra.

all three i have found to be amazing, my favorite is the flexi glide though, and not many people know about it. look into it fersure.

  • but he can only play this way because he was bit by that snake and he store his drumsticks on a coffin.

  • cool jar jar binks right behind him

  • it's useful, but hard as hell!

  • He has an extremely good sense of time.

  • so do you hit the bass on the offbeat or is he just slow with his foot?

  • Bassdrum is on the onbeats, hand is on the offbeats. This exercise is hard, hes even better at this now.

  • It's a blast beat, basically a single stroke roll between your hand and foot.

  • That's fucking hard and USEFUL.

    It's my favorite.

  • i tried this exercise right hand/left foot, i already messed up lol can't do it..

  • i'm messing up too on that, with my foots espicially, but i'm new on drumming and i know i can do it !

  • you have to start with this VERY slow. maybe 100 bpm or so...

  • yeah a friend told the same thing start very slow i showed him this technique by roddys, it's very helpful later on once you get used to it til you get faster

  • yeah, in generel it is always the best to practise everything in slow-motion first to get it precise...

  • lol he has a snake ! XD

  • he has plenty of them:P

  • with these, i find its a lot easier to do right hand with left foot or left hand with right foot as opposed to both left or right. thats because im right handed and im generally used to leading with the right on the beat and the left is almost always on the up beat. this is hard to overcome...

  • yes i agree

  • LOL, I love what he says at 1:20. It is hard tho.

  • but it really is hard ^^

  • this is FUCKING hard!

  • lol derek says the exercise is hard to master and all that but he makes it look easy :\...good job and keep up the good work

  • He holds his sticks rally unconventionally.

  • that man is INCREDIBLE and the nicest guy

  • Derek is one of the fastest drummers and i like how he teachs the exercises :D

  • omg, he's so good

he's well spoken as well, even better

  • Wow do you see the snake ?

  • no we look at the drummer sitting there and explaining to us. you should do that too

  • i love derek hes a great drummer and he seems a really nice guy

  • I agree, he really seems to be a cool dude. This indepenace exercise was shown to me by Greg Bisonette. Its a standard. And it is hard to do.

  • i'm not into death metal at all but you seem to be a good teacher and have good lessons. not to mention you seem to be a really nice guy. keep it up!
