I agree with the comment about "just the right tempo"! Considering the reverberation and huge space, the clarity is a tribute to organist, organ and recording engineers.
Love how the 32' comes on on the final chord. I've only ever heard this piece with the 32' Bombarde coming on a couple ? measures before. Bringing it on on the final chord just gives me the chills. Very, very Nice.
Ever notice that a mixture on a Cavaiile-Coll 'shimmers' whereas mixtures on other instruments blare or screech? Now THAT'S a trade secret nobody's been able to reproduce. I simply haven't heard this quality of mixture with any other organ.
@novisibersk It's the genius of Cavaille-Coll. There are only a couple of mixture stops on this organ - but they all count, and are more effective than most organs with many more.
@novisibersk - I dunno, they're a bit squeaky for me. They're all an instrinsic part of this magnificent instrument's character, but try using them for non-French repertoire and suddenly they'll sound awful. I do like me a Willis tierce mixture, or a Schulze or Schulze-inspired quint mixture (like that on the Schulze at Armley).
the swirling passions of a thousand notes like the dance of snowfall on a glorious Winter's day a dazzling musical feast a brilliantly displayed bouquet the manifold particles of light an alternate framework in a reverberant edifice resonant with joy ********** Glenn

Great version of this masterpiece played at just the right tempo in order to hear all the notes.

Awesome record. One of the best playings I have ever heard. The ending is my favorite part. The 32' sounds grandiose.

Loving the 32' note at 7:37!

The super-suspended finale annoys me.

The delicacy of the flues and flutes get to you just as much as the reeds on this organ. Don't you just love it?

However Rouen shines in all its glory... nothing beats Klaas Jan Mulder @ Hasselt with this piece.. :)
