The Dutch col. was asked by his superiors to have a sitdown with Mladic to try and cut a deal with him concerning the evacuation of the civilian population. At that moment he thought that Mladic was willing to cooperate, not knowing that he in fact had other intentions.

They saw horrible things but weren't in a position to do anything about it, no matter how much they would've wanted to. 300 men with no infantry had to control a 'safe area'. B/c it was a peacekeeping mission, the only thing they were allowed to do was to observe and report. The Serbs knew this and decided to isolate 'em by setting up roadblocks and making them pay in gas and supplies so that in the end they weren't even able to patrol the area.

They weren't allowed to engage (even though they tried) b/c of ludicrous UN-imposed restrictions ("don't shoot until you're shot at") and could just sit 'n wait until the VRS surrounded them. And they didn't get NATO airsupport in time due to organisational bureaucracy. Don't mistake their powerlesssness for cowardness. It was an international clusterfuck.

The French interefered with the air support for their own reasons and the Dutch were simply just not fighters or warriors. Mladic took advantage of this uncoordinated mess by surrounding the village, making peace enforcement impossible. After a short engagement (some VRS tanks were taken out) the situation could no longer be reverted. The UN soldiers were under the impression that all people were guaranteed a safe pass. You think that if they knew they'd celebrate later on?
@B0bbyPeru First, there are no such things as "UN" soldiers. The soldiers are under the command of the national armed forces that send them at the request of the UN. The euros have no stomach for a fight so they underarm their soldiers and fail to issue proper commands. The fact that any soldiers were "left abandonded" even makes my argument that much stronger. And if the individual commanders in the field stood up against that asshole, things would have been different; it's cowardice.

The Dutch were charged with the implementation of an UN SC-ordered mandate and fell under UN Operational Authority. Individual commanders did try to invoke further backup and some resistance was offered - in vain. Once again, it was UN organisational mismangement, NOT cowardice.

The Dutch col. was asked by his superiors to have a sitdown with Mladic to try and cut a deal with him concerning the evacuation of the civilian population. There was no other option but to negotiate since they were surrounded by the VRS and airstrikes couldn't be carried out. At that moment he thought that Mladic was willing to cooperate, not knowing that he in fact had other intentions.

B/c it was a peacekeeping mission, the only thing they were allowed to do was to observe and report. The Serbs knew this and decided to isolate 'em by setting up roadblocks and making them pay in gas and supplies so that in the end they weren't even able to patrol the area.

Who was Alija Izetbegovic to declare independence? He didn't own Bosnia, and muslims were never the majority there either. They weren't allowed to engage (even though they tried) b/c of ludicrous UN-imposed restrictions ("don't shoot until you're shot at") and could just sit 'n wait until the VRS surrounded them. And they didn't get NATO airsupport in time due to organisational bureaucracy. Don't mistake their powerlesssness for cowardness. It was an international clusterfuck.

The French interefered with the air support for their own reasons and the Dutch were simply just not fighters or warriors. Mladic took advantage of this uncoordinated mess by surrounding the village, making peace enforcement impossible. After a short engagement (some VRS tanks were taken out) the situation could no longer be reverted. The UN soldiers were under the impression that all people were guaranteed a safe pass. You think that if they knew they'd celebrate later on?

@B0bbyPeru First, there are no such things as "UN" soldiers. The soldiers are under the command of the national armed forces that send them at the request of the UN. The euros have no stomach for a fight so they underarm their soldiers and fail to issue proper commands. The fact that any soldiers were "left abandonded" even makes my argument that much stronger. And if the individual commanders in the field stood up against that asshole, things would have been different; it's cowardice.

The Dutch were charged with the implementation of an UN SC-ordered mandate and fell under UN Operational Authority. They couldn't cut across UN orders: operational C&C was placed in the context of the UN mission in B-H. Individual commanders did try to invoke further backup and some resistance was offered - in vain. Once again, it was UN organisational mismangement, NOT cowardice.
