JUST TO MAKE IT CLEAR. The Army of Pakistan thats fighting Taliban in Pakistan are not train at all or only train for short amount of time. Pakistan will never use their well train Army to fight the Taliban in Pakistan. Do You know why??? because the Taliban in Pakistan is also train by Pakistan. ISI is playing this little game in Pakistan that there's Taliban in pakistan but the truth is the Talibans are there own people each Talib get paid $7 a day Just for being a Talib.

I am surprised the US is so patient. If it were a EU country there would've been more bloodshed.Remove this distrust between the US and Pakistan. Pak Govt. has to convince people that the Taliban are a threat to national security. The people in Swat are helpless. The status quo would have continued but for 9/11. That tragic event forced a radical change in American thinking and turned its attention back to Afghanistan as well as on terrorism in general. Pakistan was thus forced by US to abandon its support of Taliban government in Afghanistan as well as to begin dismantling its Jihadi-Islamic infrastructure. Yes, US must not let Taliban (or any other non-state extremist group) take control over Pakistani nuclear weapons. Loss of state control over nuclear weapons would represent a civilizational threat to the entire world.

Having said that please understand that the US played a pivotal role in introducing radical Islam in South Asia. In other words, the current mass in Pakistan and Afghanistan is to a large extent a perfect example of "law of unintended consequences" of US policies of late 70s.

Since Afghans are (mostly illiterate) Muslims while communists are atheists, it was only natural to encourage Afghans to fight in the name of Islam. America thus encouraged: (a) establishment of a network of religious schools (ie. madrassas) to spread the concept of Jihad (ie. fight against infidels), (b) provision of funding for extremist religious schools through its oil-rich allies like Saudi Arabia, and (c) supervision of military training (for Jihad) from Pak army and CIA.

No, (US and Pak-backed) Afghans were not "actually fighting to repel the invader." The traditional kingship in Afghanistan had initially been overthrown by Afghan Communists. In the ensuring civil war, majority of Afghans opposed the ruling Communists on account of their "Godless" beliefs. Later, the Afghan Communist govt "invited" Soviet Union (SU) - as per defense treaty between the two countries - to help fight the "insurgency". SU then sent in its armed forces to defend its communist allies.

I have simply described the chain of events leading to Afghan civil war, Soviet Union's involvement in Afghanistan, and Pak and American backing of Afghan exiles in Pakistan in a proxy fight against Afghan Communist govt and its Soviet allies. As a US-educated Pakistani now living in North America, I am quite surprised at the historical ignorance of American media as well as the double-speak of Pakistani leaders. It is a fact that America introduced militant extremism in Pakistan and Afghanistan in the late 70s to help fight a proxy war against the Soviet Union in Afghanistan. The overriding American doctrine at the time was to stop the spread of communism and to check the Soviet Union's influence at all costs.
