the biggest difference between Rob and Bruce besides Rob's incredible range is that Rob leaves it all on the stage while Bruce saves it for the next gig. Rob De Man!!!!!!!
man, all this bitching about dubs. the ban admitted most of rob's vocals and some guitar bits were redone. rest your fingers and listen to the undubbed and best live drummer EVER.... LES BINKS!!!!
freakin loved this album- and when i seen themotes made they sounded this good- one of the best sounding bands i ever seen and this was my all time fav concert- you could feel the songs viberate inside your chest lol does that make sense?
Rob Halford admitted many years later that the instruments are indeed 100% live and recorded that way actually in Tokyo, however his vocals got accidentally wiped or some kind of screw up and he had to do them again in the studio in a "concert like setting" whatever that means. Oh well it works for me, I've seen them live several times back in the early/ mid 80's and maybe not now but back then his vocals live were every bit as pristine as what he layed down in the studio.
hands down best concert i been to- to date,,,and they sounded exactly like this- when he it them high notes i could feel the inside of my chest vibrate,,, seen to alot of great concerts but this one made my heart PUMP (naturally lol),,,,these old judas songs never get old, im just hoping i have as good of time at rammstein in may woohoo---i love fire lol and i hear they put on a great show .. rock on everyone
I honestly think what gets lost in the hoopla these days of thrash metal and speed metal and death metal and whatever else is that this was done in 1979!!! For those of us who were around then, dealing with the mind-numbing last vestiges of disco, the advent of the emo-laden post punk crap, and the 90mph talentless noise of punk this album was THE HEAVIEST THING we'd ever heard. It re-defined metal plain and simple.
Thers some compression on the vocals for sure, but rob is still nailing the notes. Seen priest live a few times, the standard fair for electronics, i sing my self, so I know. Still a great performance
I saw Priest in Oakland, Ca. in the 80's, My ears ached for 3 days and the buzzing in them eventually died down but it was worth it. Loudest damn show I ever went to, almost bordering on pure distortion.
@Hashplant47, hahahaha... i know what you mean. I saw them for the first time back in 1979 at the Long Beach Arena and I experienced the same thing for about 3-4 days. Then on their next World Tour they came back to Long Beach and I took my girlfriend and she complained that her ears were ringing a week later after the concert. They are for sure the most powerful band in the world.
I've been going to Judas Priest gigs regularly since the mid 80's - overdubbed or not on this particular album, it's pretty irrelevant, they really DO sound this good live. Unquestionably one of the very best live acts I've ever seen, and I've seen a hell of a lot of first class bands in the last 40 years.
@Glennfaw Agreed. I saw them in 1982. Rob sings a bit lower in register live, but they did Sinner, and he friggin NAILED every note! Also Victim Of Changes. They kicked ass live.
Have any of you ever heard Priest in concert?? They sounded like this every time overdubbed my ass.I've seen Triumph,KISS,NUGENT,ACDC,METALLICA THREE TIMES AMONGST OTHERS AND THE SIX PRIEST CONCERTS BLEW THEM ALL AWAY PUT TOGETHER. ALSO SEEN FIGHT IN 94' IN A NIGHT CLUB IN CLEARWATER FLORIDA. THEYRE JUST THAT GOOD LIVE EVEN THE LAST TOUR SOUNDED AWESOME
@jcdolp I have to agree with you. I saw them in the 80's, Defenders of the faith tour and it was one of the best live shows I've ever seen. They sound great live.
In the early 80's if you never heard this bad-ass song...........you never ever partied..........right! Pass the doob and bong baby, KK is bad ass on this one!
This is an amazing album. That said, I think Rob is singing suspicously good at this one. He hits every fuc**n note on the entire album, which shouldn't be possible with this kind of songs. And he's not even close to this level on other live performances on youtube. Overdubbing? (Anyway, they are forgiven, giving the fans such a blast.)
@HoevdingBerseBolle Honestly, I'm pretty sure that most of this album is overdubbed, but as you pointed out, they can easily forgiven, because it really is a kickass collection of songs.
@sighnofthetimes The band themselves admitted that the vocals for this one were overdubbed latter in the studio...(Some people back in the day even called it Unleashed at the Studio!) the rest is the original live performance, I think the reason was Rob having a cold or something. But since this is such still one of the best if not the single best live album ever released I don't even care and nobody really should...Oh, and Les was in my humble opinion THE drummer, listen to his wonderful playin
@kranen1 Your crazy if you think any live albums from ANY artist of this era aren't studio recorded over-dubs. Song remains the same, Double live Gonzo, Live Boot-leg, Grateful Dead Europe 72", etc. It's just too simple to do when you are recording individual tracks live, for the purpose of recording an album. If you want definitive proof, watch "Halford live in Anaheim, august, 2010. Then watch some footage of audience recordings from Ozzfest, which was around the same time. Totally dubbed
@sighnofthetimes@HoevdingBerseBolle i really don´t know, but last time i heard them live, for about 2 years ago .... , i´ll bet all my horses´´, no overdubb about it
@HoevdingBerseBolle : Its a matter of record that Rob re-recorded some of the the vocals for this album. He was suffering with a heavy cold or similar when thealbum was recorded.
Dubbing or not (which I also think), it is unbelievable though that this soundquality has been realised in 1975, even "long" before the real heavy and speed metal movement (during the '80s) took place ?
@HoevdingBerseBolle This album may or may not be overdubbed. However, after seeing them live on several occasions, the first time being in 1980 during the British Steel tour, I can attest they sound exactly like this in concert. Probably THE best live band ever! I think my ears are still ringing from that 1980 concert! I was sitting 5 rows from the stage!
@HoevdingBerseBolle It was common practice. Surprise - Live After Death, KISS Alive, anythign you can think of, was touched up in the studio and had part re-recorded. But it usually wasn't because it sucked (except for KISS alive, rofl). It was an equipment thing. Today, live gear and mixing is almost as good as studio gear, so in cases like Dream Theater, only obvious accidents (unplugged guitar buy accident from a tech) or mistakes were redone. But it IS live, just re-touched. They all are :-p
I think that's why this album is affectionately dubbed [no pun intended] 'Unleashed in the Studio'. The music is live but all of Halford's vocals were done in the studio due to some error during the recording process.
I bought this on Vinyl in 79', I was 15 yr old this was the sickest Rock i'd heard and Tokyo Tapes was Awesome and Cheap Trick Live At Budokan, Listen to K.K IN Left Channel Yeah plus Halford, Nuts.
If you want great live albums like this one then get Scorpions Tokyo Tapes, UFO's Strangers In The Night, Aerosmith's Live Bootleg and of course Triumph's Stages.
@Mattleycrue66 -sound quality like this is unheard of today...this is not the best example however...sorry sighnofthetimes...but this album new on vinyl is mind-bending!!! [(tw-PRIEST fans rejoice!; They are repressing new vinyl as I write this! That's RIGHT! ALL PRIEST albums to be repressed this year, each month! Limited editions only-of course!!! ACDC and Priest would have defeated the US, Russia, Germany, Japan, Italy, Morocco, St. Tropez, Mozambique, North Africa, North Virginia, and all the rest .... in WWII.
I saw these guys in 1979 when they opened for KISS. They blew KISS away, in my opinion. They were loud as hell, and they were touring for this album. My ears were ringing for a while after this concert.
It was funny, because the arena had weed-smoking young dudes (myself included) mixed with parents/grandparents with small children who were there for KISS. Clouds of dope smoke were everywhere. The parents/grandparents were visibly uncomfortable in the heavy-metal environment.
Any one realize that in 1979 Judas Priest was touring with AC/DC. If you watch the AC/DC Let There Be Rock movie on the bill board in one of the sceens it Says AC/DC and Judas Priest. Man that would have been awsome, Rob Halford incompany and Bonn Scott, Angus, Malcome, Phil and Cliff Williams the same night that would have been awsome.
amen to that.I used to nutts in 8th grade when halford would say"The Sinner!"..and the opening pinch harmonic would come in.I would say this album,Slayers Reign in Blood, and Ozzys Blizzaer of Oz where what defined what metal is today
@fraginat0r in 1987 - I saw Priest and Slayer on the same bill. Best concert of my life. I agree that Slayer's new crap is shit, but Slayer's first 2 albums are fucking top shelf. Go listen to them NOW
Arguably the greatest... I have to add Pantera "101 Proof", The Who "Live at Leeds", BOC "Extraterrestrial Live", Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush "Live", Jimi Hendrix "Band of Gypsies", Neil Young & Crazy Horse "Live Rust", Scorpions "Tokyo Tapes", Iron Maiden "Maiden Japan" to the list of ass kicking live albums.
How could I forget Ozzy Osbourne "Speak of the Devil", Foghat "Live", Rush "Exit Stage Left", Whitesnake "Live in the Heart of the City"..... enough now there are just too many killer live albums to mention.... Wore out a few stylus on Unleashed though!
Yeah.... I love those too...hehheh thanks for reminding me!!!!! There is just something about a good live album...Motorhead "No Sleep till Hammersmith" is a good one I listened to just recently too.
@kyuss4me Add Lynyrd Skynyrd's One More from the Road, most underated live album ever all of there definative versions of there best songs are on there.
@yugster78 Another awesome album, for sure. Sometimes you run across an album and listen to it once and it sticks with you for the rest of your life. Unleashed in the East was one for me and One More from the Road was another.
@Cryptorchild92 Aren't they though! I Especially love No Sleep Till Hammersmith... There is just something about a good live album...just picked up The Guess Who Live at The Paramount...Killer!!
The first time I heard this it was 1980. Me and three friends has just dropped some double-barrel acid. I just remember us all sitting there mezmerized and "coming to" when the song ended like we were all gone for a bit. Truly an epic Beavis and Butthead moment that I cherish recalling.

@yugster78 Show No Mercy has this same feel to it. Not just thrash, it's almost NWOBHM

@cadelk87 slayer is shit, this is fucking Judas Priest, miss us with that crap

@yugster78 Another awesome album, for sure. Sometimes you run across an album and listen to it once and it sticks with you for the rest of your life. Unleashed in the East was one for me and One More from the Road was another.
