@andthemushroom He's playing it like you play a classical song, and it's a popular song... It wasn't meant to be played delicately and mathematically distribuited... It's "choro", one of the origins of "samba", gotta have some wamth in it, not that mechanical playing that classical guitarists have.
Look for Dillermando Reis playing this same piece and listen to a true master in this style!
poem: modus operandi anti held in flesh and blood, of universal forces, much the same breath, a hamlet on and off in the creative circle, behind the glass beads, sky, a sky the dreams of a mystery, machine buttons made of heads and tails, ecstasy molecules Chains heroic tales, apparently a past life, the set of trust and peace, size - shapes and colors of all kind, including a temple, a frozen seed from black onyx, the self-supported peace.
nice clip..was looking for the transcription but this is better-nice up close shots and good audio-was able to learn it right here in 15 minutes. He's a pretty good player.
his reading of the song is perfect. in fact, too perfect: he reads the notes millimetrically, and that's actually bad, because he lacks some of the "choro" feeling in the song.. you know, samba-ish sort of thing, especially in the sixteenth-notes.. and that's what's the song is all about, you know. nevertheless he is a very good guitarrist.
@hazihazil no thats the pace the piece is meant to be. I'm only 14 but playing this piece slowly is actually very annoying and means it drags on just a bit too long.
I just saw him playing in Dublin this evening. He finished his set with Torrre Bermeja and everyone stood up and clapped him off stage. Hes brilliant!
the notes started out as c e f g a b, it was that later they acquired those names do re mi fa sol la si do. most spanish speaking countries use the later.
David Russell won the Segovia competition, Ramirez competition, Tarrega Competition, Bream Competition, Grammy and others and received contracts to record pieces to include those written outside of U.K. No guitarist, dead or alive, is better, maybe there are equals. If he interprets this piece this way, he is more than qualified to do so. In fact, a lot more qualified than those who do not think so. Show me what you have to convince me otherwise.
HE PLAYS THIS WRONG? thats not how you play the samba. that how it sounds when englishmen play latinamerican music... yeah david russell is on of the best i think but i hate to listen to his latinamerican interpretations
It's ironic that he won a grammy for his latin american interpretations then. I wonder who knows more about this, you or a select jury made of excellent musicians, and by the way...he's scottish, not english!
LMAO!! I suppose you're one of these gits who thinks you must be Brazilian to play Brazilian music, or English to play English music etc... get over it for god sake! and also get your facts right...this piece IS INCLUDED IN THE ALBUM WHICH HE WON THE GRAMMY! IDIOTA!
Ahora pude escucharlo con todo el sentimiento latino... esta fue una interpretación bárbara, en verdad no quise quedarme callado pero lo deja a uno sin palabras. Excepcional.
I was fortunate enough to study with Russell. He is incredible! I've worked with the Romero's, Kannengeiser,Verdery and others. You could say David is as good as anyone and you would get no argument from me.
Excuse me but all the performers that you mentioned although very fine guitarist are not comparable to David Russell. Maestro Russell is perhaps the most important figure of the classical guitar in the 20th century after Segovia, Williams and Bream, and this position is shared with players like Barrueco and Brouwer (guitarist and composer)
