  • uughh i am sick of people saying "ASIAN ASIAN ASIAN" ALL OVER YOUTUBE.

    THANK YOU SOO MUCH!

its almost like theyre obsessed with it....

    keep up the great videos!!

  • Thank you so much for bringing this up!

It REALLY annoys me when people use the term Asian incorrectly.

  • There should be West and East Asia continents.

  • please write Palestine insted of isreal

  • I think referring to people as Asian is an American (and possibly other regions) way of stereotyping for people from the eastern countries that most people know to exist overseas. By that, I mean China, the Koreas, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, etc. When we say Asian, it generally doesn't apply to countries like Azerbaijan (or any country west or north of China, for that matter), Russia, etc. It is a really bad generalization, now that you mention it. I, too, am guilty of using this term as well.

  • i find, a sad thing really, people try to seperate themselves as much as possible saying im this or that race, nationality whatever- asian, english, american etc. and most importantly, why do people act like they are proud of it? just because they were born on a random piece of land marked out by some random people long ago._ if we r proud of anythin, it should be the fact that WE ARE ALL HUMAN more than anythin. lets forget all this nationalistic thinking and move forward!! just my opinion lol

  • I'll be willing to bet that over 90% of the people using the word "Asian " in their descriptions are from the United States.

You make a very valid point. When describing oneself, why not say for example I'm an American with Japanese heritage. If it has bearing on the story you're telling.

  • I agree. It annoys me when people refer to people as "Asian" when they know for a fact that they're Japanese or Korean, or Chinese.

Like people are watching a Japanese movie full of Japanese people and they still call them "Asians".

If you don't know, then by all means use the word, but otherwise, call people what they are.

  • @thrash77581 Last time i check korea and japan were still in asia, but i guess the meltdowns could have moved them to aussie?

  • Asian guy is actually Canadian...

  • Those who generalize Asian as one group are maybe Westerners.

Westerners seem to think of themselves as 1 group, so it might be natural for them to generalize Asians as 1 group.

    Proof,

They praise their democracy as a tradition from Greek era. They praise Greek culture as theirs. Its strange to my Japanese ears, but Americans Australians do that.

Japanese dont do that, perhaps neither other Asians. Japanese do use Chinese things but we dont say they are ours, we say they are Chinese.

  • @superguizi The reason for the word "Asian" is really much simpler than that, it's a descendant of the old race oriented worldview. When people in Canada say Asian, what they really mean is Oriental, but that term now has racist connotations so is no longer used. So that is, the people whom, by looking at them, we wouldn't be able to tell whether or not their ancestors were from China, Japan, Vietnam, etc. That's why we don't call Indians or Arabs asians here. It's considered a racial category.

  • @Mehtaphorical

Yes, by looking at someone, we say they are Asian, Caucasian, and so on. But the point is different.

Here, the point is categorizing asians as 1 group as if they had one cultural background.

  • You nailed the point. I hate when people say the term asian or like Chinese like Japanese, when none of these nations resemble to each other in several aspects. Those mostly don't have a good educational background and way more lagged behind.

Japanese is Japanese! Korean is Korean! Chinese is Chinese! Indian is Indian! ect...

  • But in English schools in Japan, we often hear the tern the West from teachers. They like the comparison between the West and Japan.

Such comparison can be found on the Net a lot. and you can find the similar thing on many sites dealing with China, as China vs the West.

  • @superguizi yeah but in this case the west is not necessarily referring to the people, but more of the people's culture, "western opinions“ etc. which is very different and a rather new concept in certain areas of asia. Similarly western culture is not as diverse compared to that of the whole of Asia.

  • To my understanding the word "Asians" refer to the countries of the "Sinosphere". They include: China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Vietnam. The cultures were influenced by China in ancient time, so they seem really alike. I'm a Vietnamese living in Germany, but because of the reason, being afraid of calling me a Chinese, what I may not like, they call as a result also the others Asians. The "Asians" are indistinguishable to them, as these Germans say. Another new word to "Asians" are "yellows".

  • some people just really need to get a life and stop being a smart alec over some shit..

why bother wasting your life debating if this fucking russia is part of asia of europe.

oh and by the way... JUST SAYEEN. not trying to be in the arguement.

  • @shopaholiconfession1 some people just really need to get a life and stop being such a fuckass even bothering writing a comment about it.

oh and by the way... JUST SAYEEN. not trying to be in the arguement.

  • its not Israel its Palestine :\

  • When I see Russians, I see the whitest of the white.

  • There is a lot of willful ignorance going around about things and people who are different.

  • Why is the Middle East and Russia included? We all know Asian refers to East.

  • @VanillaSnow23 . Russia is in asian, someone from russia is asian. Same with the middle east. East Asian refers to those who are from Japan, korea, China, Taiwan, And so on...

  • @kanadajin3 russia is divided into two (demographically): european russia (st. petersburg, moscow, etc) where most of the native residents are caucasians and asian russia (siberia) where most of the native residents are mongoloids or mixed causcasians-mongoloids. and no, you do not call a russian as "asian".

  • @knutellaa . Thats right, and yes you do call russians asian, Asian means you come from Asia. It doesnt just mean east asian people. The term your looking for is east asian.

  • @kanadajin3 I know what "Asian" means capt. obvious, I am Asian myself (not east asian). You don't call dinara safina, andrey arshavin, vladimir putin or anna k(ournikova) asians right? If russians are considered asians, then they shouldn't be part of the uefa euro championships. Russia, generally, as a whole is considered part of europe, therefore, someone from russia is european, not asian (even if you are siberian)

  • @kanadajin3 Russia geographically is made up of two "parts" but politically and generally, they are both a part of europe. So anyone from any corner of russia is considered european.

  • @knutellaa . Not true. I know plenty of people who are russian and they state that they are asian. Most commonly now instead of saying russia is two continents, its now known as being located in eurasia. So those who come from the asian half want to say they are asian can go ahead if they want, it wouldnt be incorrect.

  • @kanadajin3 it would actually because even though russia is eurasia, it's still THE Russian Federation and the fact is, the russian federation is a member of euro, uefa and there is no such thing as the "asian russian federation" so even if you are ethnically siberian, you are still european

  • @knutellaa Euro is a currency not a political union and Russia cant even use it because it aint even a member of the European Union. Russia is considered here in europe as a combination of european and asian culture.

  • @kanadajin3 if that's the case then calling Natalia Vodianova "Asian" is correct yes? (born in Nizhniy Novogrod, Siberia)

  • Comment removed

  • The use of "asian" shouldn't be taken too literal in my opinion.

Like many words, their etymological meaning doesn't equal to the colloquial one. E.g: "Caucasian" is used for white people, who do not all come from the Caucasus; Antisemtism is jewhatred, although most semites are not jews.

But of course, to generalize about "asian" people is always wrong, regardless of the definition.

  • According to most folks then I am technically Asian too seeing as how my grandmother is from Indonesia.

I actually am guilty of using the term Asian. I don't know about everyone else but for me it's a general term referring to oriental people even though I know it's not accurate. I never use that term referring to, say, Indians, Indonesians or Sri Lankans.

  • "asian" has just become a stereotype to refer to the oriental people.

people suck at geography, and don't know asia is much bigger than what they think it is.......geographically indians are asians, but you'd never hear an indian being refered to as asian. this stereotype has gotten so big, it's even taken as the correct term by some countries. I think it's wrong but whatever!

  • @Smokeystyle "but you'd never hear an indian being refered to as asian" ever been to england?

  • No one in this world can differentiate between Nepalese & Whole Other Asians.

Because we are multi-ethnic race asians. We look like Koreans, Bhutanese, Japanese, Filipinos, Malaysian, Indians, Mongolians and every other Asians.

But We Nepalese can differentiate between us and other asians, almost 95%.

  • You know you could say "Where are you from?"

  • @MrChowTheTroll ,..yeah right:)

  • the reason why we say asian guy for example is cuz we mean funny eye

  • @metlica1988 funny eye? you know, if you go outside your continent, everyone else thinks you got funny eye. you ever realized that? go educated boy.

  • @tangjkd ye but it is from the uploaders perspective, and most of the east asians look the same way for us. And tbh most of us dont give a shit if theres a difference between them.

    moron

  • @metlica1988 if you dont give a shit about cultures, why the hell are you here in the first place? you shouldn't be here, go look at porn and jerk off.

  • @tangjkd didnt say i dont give a shit about cultures. but u just ignore the point i tried to make.

and that last part is like i would say go back to mc donalds ur fat american moron.

  • @metlica1988 sorry, not american.

  • Im a stoned asian and I didnt know one could win a 100.00 near the tropic of cancer.

  • the difference between asians are the same as the different between whites. they british, french, germans, russians. the same goes for blacks they got nigerians, kenyans, etc. latins they have portiricans, cubans, argentians, mexians.

  • Im Japanese.

I used to hate to be called Asian. But now,I dont really care.

Because Im from Japan in Asia. This is the fact.

Even some people who know that Im Japanese say like " Japanese are/ are not blah blah blah, Japanese do/do not blah blah blah" even Im different from any other Japanese. I mean everyone is different but still people like to categorize.and nobody can stop it.

  • @watashihayouko well, atleast people mostly know where your country is, try asking an American where Austria lies, I bet he'll point to Australia

  • people say im prejudice against indians because i always seperate my self from them by calling them asians and me orient or oriental, but thats not true, is just idians and chinese are so so so different, thats like calling a african american and a white british person the same... well techincally they are the same, on the inside. o.O

  • good explanation...

  • I live in America and my ancestry is Irish and English. But people would think that I'm crazy if I said that I was English-American. That would make plenty laugh. The way we give titles is absurd.

  • Very well said

  • I've heard and read "European does x and y" alot on the internet.

  • I would rather call someone asian than get their ethnicity wrong =/ , because then I feel like a jerk. I see your point though.

  • Yes this is interesting to say. My wife is from Hong Kong by way of China. But she was born a "British non British citizen" . Immigrated to the US and became a US citizen. AND Then became a Chines citizen in 1997. and I know of others with similar stores in regarding other country s. My wife describes her self a US citizen from Hong Kong. And knows very little about China, only been there on vacation. As I've never been to Germany or Ireland.

  • i think i know who he's referring to when he says the guy who makes videos about "asian guy this." I think he's mentioning peter chao, or his youtube name pyrobooby. It's actually a character he has created, or personality he has created on youtube, his real name is davin. But he has created that for just comedic reasons, its all in good humour really. But yeah i know what you mean about the asian thing. the thing that bugs me is that many still call people of east asian appearance chinese.

  • Thank you for posting this! I fell exactly the same way but it's more credible coming from you. I think the problem is that those people seem to be very sensitive when it comes to nomenclature: We can still say Black and White people but Yellow people is racist as is saying Chinaman (but but not Englishman, Frenchman or Spaniard).

So we call them Asian even though Jordan and Pakistan are also in Asia... Oriental means Easterner. We are called Westerners but they still say Oriental is bad...

  • Hi, can you please do a vid about so-called racism in Japan as I noticed other peoples videos mentioning "No Gaijin" shops. Is that racist or is it just a language thing?

Also can you talk a bit about the Japanese neo-nazi movement, are they that prevalent? Thanks :)

  • THANK YOU!

As an asian myself, this thing of calling everyone "asian" annoys me.

    This should have more views.

  • @pussylumpessru LOLL it seems like you just contradicted yourself!?

  • @FraterAeternus93 Yeah i realized that 3 hours later after I posted it. It's just that I'm Korean, Japanese and Chinese. So, I would say as a " Chinese Japanese and Korean person this..."

    yep.

  • i think it's just that it's hard to tell the difference sometimes between a japanese person and a chinese person, not that people think chinese and japanese are the same. so they automatically lable that person as asian. i mean if you don't know if they're chinese or japanese what else can you call them..?

  • I thought it was just me who is irritated by people using the word Asians to describe someone from a country like China or Japan because they're our two totally different cultures. I got to say I agree with you and this video.

  • Lots of people love to say Asian because they think it's some exotic novelty " fetish". I know it's a horrible way to see categorize people. However, not all Asian people are the same, I know this much.

  • y do ppl think that japanese and chinese are the same?? and do the japanese have chinese ancestory?

  • Bless you, lad.

  • In America most people here do not know geography. Asia means Japan and China to many people. It is sad but many people never leave their own city or town. It is only a certain percentage but those are the ones that seem most vocal. Plus putting in Asian brings up the search they want.

I am enjoying watching your wedding videos again and the nail art one is exquisite.

    Thanks

  • In my school, the population is largely asian, mostly indian and chinese, but it has always baffled me as to why the indian kids don't identify as asian when they are in fact of asian descent...it's a very strange phenomenon.

  • Good points, but the same thing happens when people talk about Latinos, or Europeans, or Americans, or even more so "white people" or "people of color."

    All pretty broad categories.

How different is a Scot from an Italian or a Hungarian. Try calling a Cuban a Mexican and see what happens. Or even an "American" from Seattle versus one from Atlanta. And when people talk about "Americans, "does that include Canadians and Mexicans, or even Brazilians? They are all in the Americas.

  • hearing this from a westerner, THANK YOU. it's like, most of the american people think all asians are from china and then they ask, "can you speak asian?" and I'm like, " can you speak white?" >.<

  • Damn right.

  • Agreed!

  • asian, european, mexican, american, north polian, antarctikian, are all awesome but i prefer human :)

  • By the way hope everything is ok in Japan, seems all your last posts are 2 months old.

  • @Chindro2828

I post new videos every day...

it is the Youtube notification system that is FAILING :-D

  • @TheJapanChannelDcom Wow youre quick. Hmmm seems my other comment didn't post....

  • i know one thing... ASIAN FOOD KICKS ASSASSINS' BUTTS :P

  • well um my gf is from the philipines and currently lives in japan at the moment and i dont like to dictate asian i just say japanese or chinese or whatever however she dictates and say americans are like that americans are like this so i kinda say to her the same thing and then i say to her america is full of many different cultures we are very very different.

  • @zadeisme well how diverse are the cultures in america compared to that of the countries in Asia?maybe u should ask yourself that.Just in China alone, there are 55 ethnic groups that lives completely different lifestyles(comparably the american descents of europeans are nt that diverse at all)not trying to hate here.Generalizations are not good. However you're counterargument against your girlfriend fails, because you simply cannot compare the diversity of a country to that of the largest continent

  • It's like when people say "americans"...

  • ignorance hurts. (of others)

  • i did not know all those contrys were part of Asia lol defitly not Russia thats crazzy shose what i know win i think of Asians i think Japan china kora and so on wich is what i think alot of people do its moere of the way thay looke and not were thay are from just what i think

  • of course they do it with europeans. they generalize them as "white" which is probably worse. at least asia is a place and not a shade.

  • Is it just me...or did the video kind of short out halfway at the ending...I didn't even hear you finish your sentence..?

  • I agree, I hate this too. Though, for example, my parents and I were in Egypt when I was younger, my Dad was bartering for a cotton blanket from a shop on the street. The man we got it from wouldn't go lower, then he asked "You American?" my father said "Nah, we are English" and the man agreed to the lower price. Is this just because we are foreigners and we all look "the same" in other countries, or are we being "mixed up" like we do to close countries.

  • @TheErrantWilder Like China and Japan or Korea and China, I can tell the difference, I don't understand how people can't!! All of the countries and people are completely different. But it happens. Though at a glance all Europeans do look the same, but we are not called "Europeans" so why do we do this to a continent that is a hundred times more diverse?

  • @TheErrantWilder There is no reason, the problem is we put all those countries in one massive chunk when they really shouldn't be, it does seem like "us and them" echoing from when England ect were expanding into the East. Though even the Americas are split into two because they are so different. Why not Asia? I think Asia should be split up into more permanent continents with "Asia" not in the name.

  • @TheErrantWilder I believe that was just a "mix up" and if you're mad or offended just blame it on the man's lack of education. The video, however, talks about the term "asian" being used as generalization and a sign of ignorance....so it's different.

  • What does Asian people think of this video?

  • Most people think I'm Mexican or Indian, but I'm truly not. I'm a filipino. And most of the people that I come across to don't even know where the Philippines is they don't even know that is also Asian. Most of them think true Asians are the oriental ones and that's all they can accept. I wish people were smarter when it comes to these stuff T-T

  • I totally agree with you :)

  • @zZhOrNyZmOnSTeRZz Well, you are aggressive, but you are also right

  • wow..this is boring

  • They beautiful :)

  • I have an American friend who laughed at me for half an hour because I said I was half Asian. Apparently, Iraq doesn't count in his book as Asian.

  • Good point!

  • Asian people typically describe Europeans and american's as "westerners", because it is hard for them to differentiate facial features they are not used to.

The same holds true for Westerners trying to describe Asian people.

  • @stratelite

You cant tell the difference between someone from India and someone from China?

    OK.

  • @TheJapanChannelDcom when people say Asian, they really mean East-Asian... that means peoples like Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese... you must agree that you can't really differentiate them...

  • @sauron1grenoble I can tell the difference, its quite easy

  • @wingwaabuddha of course the cultures are different, but can you differentiate them physically?

  • @sauron1grenoble yah, its taken a while, but I can, of course not with 100 percent accuracy, but not far from it.

  • @wingwaabuddha well i guess that makes me a racist dumb fuck

  • @sauron1grenoble No it doesnt, that was someone else who called you that. It just takes time to understand the differences. Culture is easy to understand, fashion takes some time to differentiate, and than comes the physical differences.

  • @wingwaabuddha yeah, i know it was someone else... i was trying to joke about it with you...

I haven't really "studied" anything about other Asian cultures except the Japanese culture, but i hate the thought of anyone thinking I'm just some ignorant asshole that thinks Chinese and Japanese are the same people and speak the same language. It's just that to my eyes, it's just as with Europeans...i can spot some differences but i can't really tell people apart just by the way they look...

  • Comment removed

  • @wingwaabuddha oh and i'm from Europe

  • @sauron1grenoble Yep, have to agree. I'm of Asian descent but in America I was never considered "Asian" growing up, I was considered "Indian" because I have brown skin. (Not Indian btw). I got used to it.

  • @sauron1grenoble Not true, in britain ( i think ) they call indians asians , and chinese orientals. And whatever people say , its still a fact that these countries are all asian.

  • @TheJapanChannelDcom

I think she (he?) means Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, etc. :)

    @stratelite

I'm a westerner, but I can definitely tell the difference between all Asian races. Even though I'm completely European, I still have (Vietnamese) Asian cousins, and, I'm always watching this guy's videos, and others, so it's quite easy to tell now.

  • @0appleattack0 Even thai look different, and if she means east asia she should say east asia.

  • @TheJapanChannelDcom That's easy, but some westerners can't tell Vietnamese apart from Chinese or Korean. I don't personally consider Indians or bruneians asian. To most westerners asians are of Korean, Japanese,Chinese,Vietnamese,Thai heritage. More educated people will add in Mongolian,Laos,Cambodian and even Burmese and Filipino. Thing is, if you hear someone referring to someone as Chinese and they are Viet....just correct them. In due time the world will have the proper education.

  • Most westerners consider Japan,Korea,China,Vietnam and Thai as "asian". More educated people know that Phillipines,Laos,Cambodia,Mongolia and Burma also belong in that class.Don't know why i dont consider India or Brunei and so on, asian. Only thing i do if someone refers to a person as Chinese and i know theyre Viet, is correct them. Sooner or later the world will catch up on education& experience and get it right. Then agian by then we all might be brown :)

  • @TheJapanChannelDcom I think many Americans don't know that India is part of Asia...."Asian" people usually means Chinese or Japanese here, maybe also Korean and Vietnamese.

  • @TheJapanChannelDcom I think Stratelite's point is that generally people from that region are best at picking out facial differences, but people elsewhere have trouble with it, so it's easier to use a blanket term like Asian, Westerner, etc. For instance I would see a difference between an Indian and Chinese person, but I probably wouldn't be able to tell where they're from specifically. So I'll use Asian for the Chinese person and Eastern for the Indian.

  • @stratelite Asians know their Asians, for some reason true Asians can always tell what country another Asian is just walking on the street; you can sorta do it too with Europeans if you study common facial features of different countries.

  • @stratelite I don't. I can differientiate between a Korean, Japanese, chinese, German, American, british, Canadian, Mexican, Venezuelan. It just takes a little less ignorance, and a little more focus. it is not that hard.

  • @Larindarr Yes, and that is why I used the word "typically". Of course if you take the time to study it, one can differentiate, but most people don't bother to take the time to.

  • rofl azerbaijan is a fun place to live XD

  • I just spotted your christmass in japan video , haven't see it yet.

before I do , I want to let you know that I'm a melchizedek and that christmass is nothing but roman vatican paganism to me.

I can't wait to see what you have to say about christmass in japan.

  • The reasons for american schools being so crappy has alot to do with the fact that we have to tolerate other races dissrupting our lives.

The real truth is america doesn't have an education system , all they have are nazi youth camps.

    Obama doesn't give a damn ....

  • well , here I am on another one of your videos , will I ever escape you lol

I never say asians , I call them by proper tittle

Americans are dummies , they are uneducated !

    American schools teach NOTHING !

I know that may sound horrible of me to say that but it's the honest truth.

American schools teach nothing but paganism , socialism , nazi

Sending your kids to an american public school is exactly like sending them to a mini hitler youth camp.

    minus any diciplin !

  • I totally second you. Thank you!

  • because the eastern(asian) half of the world is collective and tends to repress their personality while the western half tends to be more indiviualistic and has the bigger personalities...with japanese repressing their personality the most and americans having the biggest personalities in the world...becaue asians are tend to be quiet and not show big personalities we tend to think they are all the same ....the youth in japan are rebelling against this though

  • asian in the UK means generally indian subcontinent but in the rest of the world, it means oriental. thats how it should be :)

indians and middle east should be synonymous, asians are oriental. SNM.

  • People make generalizations because their brains can't comprehended the true nature of diversity

  • @del885 no Asian Australians are people with Asian backgrounds who were born in Australia.

  • I totally agree with what your saying. Also, we might elaborate and say we have chinese or italian ancestry but i dont understand why we hyphenate our nationalities. Isnt an Australian first and foremost Australian? So why devalue our citizenship to our birth countries by saying Chinese-.......or what ever country? Generalizing and saying "Asian"or whatever kills what ever respect we have for the nation our ancestors came from.

  • I always wondered why Russians aren't considered Asians. Sure they are caucasion, but their country alone makes up a lot of Asia.

  • @theonlycloudberry so would all of those people have similar likes/dislikes? Thats what hes talking about.

  • @DrVoltage1 That's not the subject I got out of it.

  • what do oriental poeple think of this ?

  • you're right.

  • Asian Australian? What the? I think you mean Australasian

  • Thanks for PMing me this video. I understand what you are saying. Asia is HUGE and there is certainly a difference between, say, the Japanese, and people from India, yet they are all from what is referred to as Asia. Or South Asia.

"Asian" has turned into a word that seems to have lost it's geographical meaning, if that makes sense.

And I lol'd when you said, "You don't see a video that says 'sexy European girl does......', so true! That would sound ridiculous, haha!

  • Yeah, our "L" is kinda bad too, and in the south south west of the island the "R" is very pronounced. In my opinion Colombians have the best pronunciation. LOL "ya tu sabes", Cubans do that a lot too!!!

  • When people think of Asians they think of Vietnam, Japan, China, Mongolia, Thailand, Korea, Cambodia, countries in eastern and southeastern parts of Asia. Russia is not asian.

  • Sounds similar to racism being about black and whites in people's minds or people saying that I have a 'British' accent. Sweeping generalisations aren't your friend.

  • I think it's because of historic racism. White people merit the respect of distinguishing their nationalities, but other ethnic groups don't. So people are African, not Sudanese/Liberian/Ugandan/etc and people in East Asia (basically people with the epicanthic fold) are just Asians (for some reason all the other countries in Asia are ignored). Then you get Latinos, Arabs, Pakis, Brown people, etc. No distinction of nationality for non-whites, I think it's just residue from historic racism

  • @oihhow Actually For Latinos, we don't usually refer to ourselfs as latinos especially in our respective country. Usualy people from other places will refer to us latinos but we are very proud of our individual nationality and national colors. There is alot of love and brothership among all latin america in general, but even among ourselves we have steriotypes, xenophobia and recisim, it's something we maybe don't show as stongly but sadly it's there. I hope I have explained myself well.

  • @tytania3545 but at least most latinos share a common language, which is spanish. sure they might have different accents and some words might mean something else, and there might be some indigenous languages too, but for the most part, you all speak the same language and can understand each other.

Asia on the other hand, is completely different...shit even people within china can't understand each other

  • @VanMedia LOL YEAH WE DO THAT A LOT!!! But if you watch and notice we don't just do it with asians we also do it amg ourselfs (like in West Side Story). When your in a store or call a bartender to bring you a drink we will call them by difrent things and in nway is it in a derogatory fashion: for example here in Puerto Rico we will can somebody "Oye Negro!!!" ( hey black, even when the person you are refering to isn't black) or "Mi amor" (my love), nobody here will take it as an insult.

  • @tytania3545 But also if you notice if you ask us what we are or where we are from we will say I'm Puertorrican or I'm Venezualan. It's like with asians we tend to not like to be confused. In fact in Spain if you call someone from Castilla a Gallego they may take it as an insult (don't ask me why, it's what they told me when I went there).

  • @tytania3545 northern spaniards have the hardest accents to understand :D. i think mexicans are the easiest to understand. puertorricans are weird cause they tend not to pronounce the "s" sound in tu form :D.... i.e ya tu sabes :D

  • @tytania3545 i've met plenty of latinos, since i live in nyc and most of the time they ask me if am i chinese, then when i tell them i'm not, they'll say "oh but you understand what other asians say right? you speak the same language right?"

idk maybe it's cause most latin and south american countries have spanish as their national language, they figure asian countries most all have the same national language too.

but seriously, what's with latinos and everyone being chino?

  • The term Asian takes on different meanings depending on the region. I am from New York and Asian usually refers to someone that is Chinese, rarely Japanese, since it is not as common here as opposed to say, the West coast. Its a form of generalizing that facilitates conversation in the sense that it makes it easier, not necessarily meant to be specific or clearer.

  • @TheJapanChannelDcom America is not a country but a continent =D

  • Yeah, I'm Asian because my ancestors are from Asia. I'm not Japanese, Chinese, nor Korean, but i still acknowledge my racial background and it's what i am and i can't change it. Sure, I wish to become Japanese but even i change into their lifestyle, I'm still the same. Well i plan to go to Japanese and proud to be Asian.

  • in general we americans are too lazy and pretty ignorant of the world outside our towns and or cities.

  • @SRT480 I'm glad you think of yourself that way but I am American and I am nothing like you mentioned. In fact, I hate it when people generalize us all as what you said. (As people say all "Asians" are good at math and all Muslims are terrorists." So kindly shut the hell up and since we're throwing out stereotypes: Go pig out at McDonalds.

  • i guess the shape of the eyes has much to do with this

  • true dat on the "American" generalization. when I cross a border to the north or south I dont tell them I am American. because they are American too. yet once over the boarder if I said "we are Americans" I find myself being corrected.

  • That's a great point you made. But I guess, for me I'm a bit more offended when some Western people tend to think that Asians are either Indians or Chinese. There are, of course, the Japanese, the Indonesians, the Fillipinos, etc. We look and sound different. I would prefer to be refered to as an Asian than to be wrongly assumed.

  • I totally agree! This is a pretty bothersome to me as well. It's really annoying when people refer to my studying of Japanese as "studying Asian."

  • I know what asians HATE: Black People.

  • @IIWCProductions Actually, all of the asians that live in my town, they all hang out with black people :)

  • Comment removed

  • @XxlexiaraxX sorry, i made a comment not directed to you >_< i was trying to comment on IIWCProductions's stupid comment. my bad

  • @IIWCProductions wrong. i have a Japanese friend and I'm black. and he has a black girlfriend. also, he is obsessed with Michael Jordan and Lebron James. he's a big basketball fan :) he believes that black people make the best athletes, kinda funny

  • i think the reason ppl dont say "European guy etc etc.." is because you cant tell whos European by looking at them, but you can tell who is Asian and black and white...

in sociology my prof sez that ppl are categorized as negroid (black), Caucasoid (white), mongoloid (Asian), "indigenous" (the native American tribes of the Americas), and Australoid (aborigines & sum others) i was told there are also newly named groups & sub groups

im not an expert on it tho

  • i never hear ppl here in the usa (in my areas) say "european man" they'll say it by color/race...like white guy does this, black guy does that...asian guy does this...etc

cuz most cant tell where they might be from; i cant tell what kind of asian, what kind of white or what kind of black

in my own case i do use "asian" alot cuz i cant really tell the difference in asians...i notice things like darker or lighter but thats all i can really tell

  • I'm American and I could care less if people call me American but to answer your question I guess people call people from Asia Asian so they don't offend them by saying they are Chinese when they're really Japanese. Another thing is that people say Asian because it could count for any race in Asia. That's my opinion on this topic.
