Paul and James are talking about 2 different things when they each use the term "works". Paul is talking about works of the Law, James is talking about good deeds.
James proved that HE had as much ubderstanding of the meaning of the Greek word PISTEO..as many Christians today have...zero..! The Demons do not place their FAITH in God they REBELLED against God and still rebel against him. Not so with Christians..we place our FAITH in God..which is much much more than just "believe that God exists"..! See the difference..?
Notice they always stop at that verse and do not continue on to find out what FAITH meant to James..James 2:18 and 19 are critical to understaning that James' idea of what FAITH is..was in error. James thought that BELIEF and FAITH were synonyms..and he used them in that context when in fact FAITH is not the same as BELIEF. The Demons do NOT have FAITH in God all they have is BELIEF. Belief that God exists is not FAITH in God. Thus James was in error scriptually to say what he did.
4:00 The woman speaking has no clue to what James said at all..which BTW is the current state of most of Christianity today..When James said James 2:19..he showed right there that he had no understanding whatsoever of what FAITH is to God. James then goes on to MISQUOTE the Genesis account of Abraham..that Paul rightly quotes in Gal 3:6 and Rom 4.
3:17 I'd say that GALATIANS is the most influential letter..It is single handedly the "freedom" letter to the church. It is the Declaration of Independence so to speak..of all Christianity. Romans was the calmer more thought out methodical letter. Galatians contains within it the fire in the belly speech..that comes from the soul of a man who has just been set free by God. You can not be an inteligent person in this world without understanding Galatians.
James the "supposed" brother of Jesus..( an indepth study of the use of the word ADELPHOS in NT scripture is needed to understand why James was wrongly called Jesus' brother )..was or leaned towards being an Essene..or a Pharisee supporter..if not a Pharisee himself..to be polite..James according to scripture..had "Pharisitical tendencies".
@EWETUBER2 Jesus and his followers had "Pharistiical tendencies". Pharisees believed in the physical resurrection of the body, they de-emphasized the temple, they had a more figurative interpretation of the Torah, they were oriented more toward the common people. It's no surprise that Paul was also a Pharisee.
Scripturally there is NO debate on this subject at all.. The problem is not many people take the time to read scripture and see the evidence on this. John 7..Acts 2..Acts 15..Acts 21..Galatians 1..James 2.. James 4..Heb 11..Romans 4 ..Luke 18..Joshua 6..Gen 15.. Gen 22..1 Tim 5..and others ..You have to know your scriptures in order to sift through all this..to then come to the conclusion based ON scripture ( not feelings )..that James..was wrong to say what he did.
It is straw..not grains in it..! Just match the first 10 verses of Galatians 1 with the first 10 verses of James and see who was preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
James was the "Benny Hinn/Joel Osteen of his day..He was a real jerk..!
Who is the woman at the beginning? This is the 2nd time I've seen her and it's apparent that she hasn't read the bible, at least not for a very long time. She assumes that James is written by the brother of Jesus, but the text never says that. I wonder if she knows that James was also the name of two of Jesus' twelve disciples, or if she knows that "Paradise Lost" is not part of the bible.
@KayBeeEee1983 James was the "supposed" brother of Jesus..but if we go to the right verses of scripture..scripture proves that James was not ..and could not have been Jesus real actual blood brother..at best James was a step brother..
@EWETUBER2 Why couldn't James be a blood brother of Jesus? Mary had other children besides Jesus, right?
Matthew 13:55 - "Then they scoffed, 'He's just the carpenter's son, and we know Mary, his mother, and his brothers--James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas.' "
I wish people would cite the bible verse when they say things like "scripture proves". It's not hard to write "Matthew 13:55" or whatever.
@KayBeeEee1983 Not according to scripture..The scriptures rule all that out..BTW scripture is not given to teach about the sexual life of Mary..so whether she did or didn't have children after she FIRST had jesus is illrelivant to the discussion..
@EWETUBER2 "scripture is not given to teach about the sexual life of Mary..so whether she did or didn't have children after she FIRST had jesus is illrelivant to the discussion.."
The sex life of Mary is relevant when you're discussing whether or not James is the blood brother of Jesus....
I'm sorry, but WTH is the woman talking about at the end? Is she even a scholar? The verb ομνυμι used in Mt 5:34 & James 5:12 only means "swear" in the sense of "give an oath", not "curse".
James is referring to works that come as a result of salvation. Works are NOT required for salvation. If someone fully turns their life over to Jesus in faith, works will come. How these works manifest themselves from person to person differs, but the works will line up with the Bible.
When Paul refers to works, he is referring to the idea of justification by works, which was popular in Judaism.
I would put a linear illustration of Paul's ideas like this:
Paul: Grace -> Faith -> Salvation
You're right in that Paul viewed works in the Jewish tradition, and that works were required for justification per the law he previously lived by. It looks like you were saying that Paul held to this belief, instead of the former. But I think you were just pointing out each's view on works. I just don't want any misunderstandings. :)
@usafwings09 Yes, thanks for clarifying. I was trying to hit on works and how the two people contextually addressed them, but Grace obviously shouldn't be overlooked.
@FnordPerfect: You didn't know about the book of James yet you know what the apocrypha is? :)
I don't know if we'll do them or not... I'd really like to, but we may run out or time and resources... The priority is doing the standard 66 books first, then we'll see how we're placed?
hey! a new professor! I think she's new to videos. She did good :) Something I learned here - I've never read Milton but it's interesting to me that he has the birth of death in his poem... and in His Dark Materials, Pullman has the death of death. Interesting.
James just reinforce the teachings of Christ, and Romans just says you need Christ to get into Heaven. James is telling us to be a faithful Christian you must have the fruits of the Spirit coming from you.
Romans and James do not really dissagree. Both talk about faith, James only elaborates and points out that if you have faith, you will also do what God wants and that means you will act on your faith.
I can see why Luther would say its an epistle of straw because it might confuse people into believing salvation comes through works, but really what is happening is the good works come out of and from salvation through faith.
Paul and James are talking about 2 different things when they each use the term "works". Paul is talking about works of the Law, James is talking about good deeds.

Well you are aware that JESUS is the son of God the Father in Heaven..Jesus was NOT the actual son of a carpenter..
