@sideslide23 You're perfectly right. The train you mentioned set a speed of 318 km/h on dec. 8th 1972.
In the 1976 the TGV 001 was ready for commercial use, but Alstom and SNCF changed project because of the 1973 oil shock ; studies began again with electric powered machines.
... but this particular trainset is not a true TGV. Supercharged locomotives, and larger wheels on a section of track prepared just for this event. What the Frogs don't mention is the damage to the train and the track after this run.
And where this oneself to rush, for what, I will so to travel, in silence and quiet, Polish EN57 to admire for window views, you do not know what even then to go pleasure EN57
Quite impressive. But for commercial purposes useless. If trains are going faster than 300 km/h they just need too much energy, so it gets too expensive. Only the German Transrapid or the Japanese Maglev, which uses a magnetic levitation system, could go something like 500 km/h and be still energy-efficient.
The French just did break the record for marketing purposes...
They did it for marketing porpouses, because they wanted to prove that they have the fastest rail train in the world. So far the Jap Maglev is heaving trouble with build price because it costs twice as much to make a high-speed rail track than it costs to make a Maglev track.
And you have to build that Maglev track *everywhere*. A huge advantage of TGV is that in the last few miles, when high speed isn't practical anyway, it can roll on unimproved track - right into the _gare_ you already have in the center of town. With maglev you'll be building new stations and probably putting them miles outside of town (because there's no place left to lay maglev tracks closer in); getting to them will be just as bad as getting to the airport.
Come on people 600kph .... 600kph anyone?

I've been once in the TGV cabine. The acceleration is impressive and at 300km/h you see smashed little rain drops :)
