money means nothing if you got it spare.. it only means something when you need it to live..
My daughter, who is not rich, spent $16,000 for heart surgery for her terrier. She used savings. Since she has done yearly tests, another $8,000. Recently he ate some toy and got a ball lodged in his intestine....another $5,000. She doesn't drink, go clubbing etc. Just loves her animal.
each cat and dog has its own personality and cannot be replace, just lke a fmaily member cnnot be replaced.. unless I cannot psysically afford to pay the bills i.e id have to sell my house, or my family if i had one would have to suffer then id pay absolutely..
I'd say 1,000 is my limit, of course I'd spend more if I could. I love my cats so much, and for the first few years of his life, one of my cats was really sick and we did have to spend a lot of money on him. I was really surprised by this study, I thought cat owners would be willing to spend more.

And if you want to agree that as a domesticated animal, the cat is on par with the dung beetle, sure. Ancient egypt was clearly the premier frontrunner in pet ownership.
a cat works in a care ward when people are dying.. and the cat jumps onto the beds and snuggles up to the people that are dying,, the next day the person would pass away , the cat naturally had a six sense and caring nature..
a cat works in a japanese rail station, it is dressed up as a train worker outfit with a hat, and since this cat worked there, they have made 10 filds the money.
Over the 4th of July, oneof our cats got out and was attacked by a neighbor's dog. The total bill was just over $2,000. We had already made plans to come up with $4k-$5k if needed.
But on a side note, there are many financial assistance organizations out there that will grant money to you to pay for urgent life-saving care. Others will provide very low interest loans to cover immediate medical needs.
The only one I know of right off is "face4pets" and "labradorharbor".
I had to put my dog to sleep five months ago. I still wear his tag around my neck. I can honestly say I would have payed or done ANYTHING to save him.
@rushindulen only 23, dude, thats a bit old to be living with parents, my parents moved out when they were 18, and so did my brother, im planing on moving out when im 19.
To me it would matter what's wrong and how they are going to fix it. If it's something that will only keep my pet alive, but with no quality of life; my limit would go down. I wouldn't keep a suffering animal alive just to assuage my sense of loss. On the other hand, if 5, 7, 8k $ would heal them and they would live happily - ya know, you can make payments...
I've heard of some people going bankrupt or selling there house for there pet to live. I love animals. Put I think that's a bit much. Just for an animal to live only for a few months or years?!
Don't have a kid until you can afford it. Don't get a pet until you can afford it. Now, no one should expect that they would ever have to have thousands available at any given time to care for their pet, but you need to have a few hundred available should something happen or even for standard vet care (spaying, neutering, dental, shots, etc.)
I mean ... gosh I cant afford 100$ of dentist for myself... =.= Like the guy there , never had money... I cant spend that on me so ... Thats really cool people who can afford it and I would pay anything if I'd have that money. But thats impossible for me.
I would spend what I have to, but if my pet have to get to the vet at a time of the month where I cant even afford to eat... I cant do miracles... I see all you people saying you would spend like 7000 $ and more on your pets... wow, lucky you, thats barely what I make in the whole fuckin year. Im sure not everyone here is that rich. Hypocrits.
What generally happens is that people pay the $3000 to $5000 and the dog has other problems, lives another year or maybe two, and dies anyway. So would you pay the money if you knew the dog was not going to have quality of life and would invariably die anyway?
there shouldn't be a limit to the money you would spend to save your pets life. if there is, than you better not get a pet in the first place. i would pay every cent. we should make a law that you must be willing to spend for pets vet costs to get one. you wouldn't let someone adopt a child who wouldn't pay 5000 dollars on them. its sick that people care more about money than other living things. and i don't like it when people refer to animals as "it". they are he's and she's too you know.
@freakface666666 Haha yeah riiight. I would if I'd have the money but I have a a ret to pay too. You say that but you probably dont have to pay shit and live at your mom's house.
Stupid fucking ignorance displayed by the tyt hosts here...as a responsible pet owner, and someone who loves their pet...there is NO limit here! So, if her pet needed $7,000.01...her pet would die...she should NEVER IN HER LIFE take on the responsibility of pet ownership! This is just STUPID!
@ktchong Because people form an emotional attachment to Dogs. It's different then deciding between paying $1500 dollars to repair your computer when you could just buy a new one for $1000...
I've had 3 dogs for over 10 years each and the total vet costs including the cost of the dog was under $10k. If you take care of your pet you won't have to pay much for vet treatment. If you train it, it won't go jumping under cars, eating shit off the street or attacking other dogs. The most expensive vet cost was getting worms out from one of my dogs with antibiotics and getting it's teeth cleaned when I first bought it from a pet store (bad idea, go breeder).
I always keep it my limit to 400 for a pet. I think of all the other healthy pets being put down. Friends down the street just paid 2700 for their cat of 14 years and it still died.
Dumb video! Hum...... lets see, pay rent and food or spend thousands on sick pet, I go for roof over my head and feeding my kids! I love animals too, but you have to draw the line somewhere when is comes down to your family or your pets. This is BLEEDING HEART AMERICA! People like them is why our country is so F**KED up!
Everyone is wrong about cats. Cmon... I don't care what people say, they can be really friendly. I have 2 dogs and a cat. Well the dogs aren't actually mine, the cat is. He is not a stray cat. We bought him when he was a kitten and now he is 13 years old. He is the most loving creature I ever known. There are 6 people in my house and yet he comes to MY bed all the time. He comes to ME, and I pet him and let him cuddle. People say cats don't give a shit, I can tell he cares about me the way I do.
I think it's fairly obvious that the amount that someone will pay for their pet is directly proportional to how much money they are making. People who make more will spend more.
my family put out almost $300 or $400 for our house cat because he had to get stitches and medicine.People might say thats not enough money but do it really matter? all that really matters is that the pet is taken care of
Cats suck huge donkey balls, you feed it, shelter it, pamper it and in return it bites and claws you as if your a stranger til the day it dies! If a cat even so much as look at me wrong id snap its neck.
@madaznboy Your comment says more about you than about cats. Cats bite and claw you because they can tell you aren't trustworthy. Unlike dogs, cats are less tolerant of abusive, mean assholes. I've interacted with thousands of cats in my life. The only cats that would bite and claw are strays who have never been socialized or cats who have been abused or traumatized.
You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed. - "The little prince" by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. They should make a different study where they take those 1,112 people and make them read that book before answering how much money they'd be willing to spend on their pet.
The statement "1/3 of pet owners will throw Fifi under the bus" is completely unrealistic. They said $500 or less, what if ur bill was $500, I don't hav that kind of money to throw at my own medical bill let alone a pet's. I agree with mikkigg, it doesn't tell you how old the pet is, what if a dog is 15 (which is pretty damn old) i'm not going to break the bank for it, just make it as happy or comfotable as possible.
This study is not a fair representation of owners of both cats and dogs. Unless you are faced with the situation, you never know what you will do. The one important point they never brought up during this study is how old the pet, either cat or dog, and would it be humane to keep the pet suffering or let the pet go. I will end this with what I and others might find the difference between cats and dogs; I have had both and love them equally! "Dogs have owners, Cats have Staff"! (LOL)
I love having pets around, especially cats, strays or not doesn't matter to me..paying for it's 'repair' as they call it is same as paying for a doctor when my little brother goes to one..it's the same amount of love you receive from each..if you love an animal,it will return you with love and true love knows no limits especially not of those of 700 $
It'd depend on my saving's at the moment 20k so, 15k max for my dog, 1k max for my cat and as for my mother 1k, max for my father 0 bucks and i'd laught at him. Reason's simple my dog seem's more human then my cat and my mothers not likely to out live my dog anyways and i hate my father.
The point when a human being (the being at the top of the food chain) knowingly picks up the feces of another animal (who is below in the food chain) is when you know humans really have a problem. ESPECIALLY cat owners. Those animals are frickin disgusting.
@merdakaril The following may be an inane remark, but I'll post it anyway. St. Thomas Aquinas asked and answered the following question: "What is the purpose between work and play? Work has a purpose, play has none. But there must be a time for purposeless things, even foolishness."
We are four legged animal lovers. Humans? Not so much! We are not rich but we have paid as much as $1000 for an operation but is just the highest we have ran into. I would "NOT" pay $1000 for my father who was a selfish bastard to get anything done. Heck do what the irch do, barrow the money then claim bankruptcy! This is every year for some rich!
i would spend my money on an animal and a person. I feel all pets are as much people even cats. Just because more people own dogs doesn't mean they won't spend their money when it comes down to it. Your study is BS and i would appreciate if you would do more of a "study" than just asking a few people on the street. Yes dogs need direction but cats already have it and i admire them for that. I wouldn't change my cats or the money i spent on them for anything. Thank you.
@ahmadclk thats kinda of cold, you're replacable too.Sure if you got killed no biggy right theres plenty of people for no one too notice anyways.Plus if it's really that big of an issue ur mom can lay on her back and pop out a revised version of you in 9 months.Get a better thinking structure or you won't get very far in life with the one you have.
@xM455xK0NFUZ10Nx "Get a better thinking structure or you won't get very far in life with the one you have." lol look who's talking, ur the 1 thats comparing human life to animal life. Theres a huge difference if u didnt know. Animals cant talk, they dont contribute anything 2 society, the only thing that they r good 4 is looking cute. You are probably 1 of those people who lives with like 9 cats and doesnt have a life. Its funny how u r talking about my mom when ur mom regrets not swallowing.
@ahmadclk its not just about the fact of an animal life. in general if your not willing to be responsible for a life you enslave then you shouldn't have one at all. If you have a pet but won't take care of it don't waste you're time and the animals.People with that think the way you do are the reason why there are so many animals crowding pound's.They get an animal for kicks and when it gives them issues they think they can do nothing or pawn it on someone else.
@xM455xK0NFUZ10Nx that's why I don't buy expensive pets, when there is something wrong with my fish, I'm not going to buy $15 medicine when I bought the fish for $2.
my cat and my dogs are my babies.... I'm broke... and i think I will spend whatever it takes to save my babies lifes. I spayed my cat, Neutered my dogs and I'm willing to spend more on them if they needed it :-)
@Erandi8888 amen to that!!! same here i spend all my money from my job to go towards feeding and medical bills for my 2 cats, my dog and my hamster. i love them like my own. i would do anything for them.
@PObserver Actually, cats are fairly social. I saw a documentary about farm cats which showed how cats live in communities. It's true that most cats aren't social hunters, but they're far from being anti-social. If cats were anti-social, they wouldn't have spent the last several thousand years living with humans.
I've paid whatever it's taken, so far the highest amount was $1350- when my cat was super hurt after a hit & run. I must be really lucky because the Vets I've dealt w/never made me put all the money down- there've been payment plans just like w/the stupid purchases of new cars. Once or twice I've had interest, but mostly NOT. This piece really makes me angry- after so much intelligent coverage & discussion, you guys really let me down.
This study isn't very useful. Many cats that are "pets" are actually just strays that someone happens to feed. Of course, people are less willing to pay much money for strays. I'd rather see a study done on dog owners vs cat owners who keep their cats in their homes. You'd also need to differentiate between cats and dogs of specific breeds vs cats and dogs that are strays and mutts. Obviously, if someone paid a lot for the animal in the first place, then they'll spend a lot keeping it alive.
@Helicon2112 I wan't making a personal value judgment about stray cats. I've only ever had stray cats & presently the two cats living with me are former strays. I'm willing to spend a lot of money on my cats, but I realize I'm probably not normal. I live in Iowa where there are tons of stray cats in rural areas (there isn't a similar population of stray dogs). It's not unusual for farmers to feed cats and so they may consider them pets, but I know most rural people don't put much value on cats.
@MariaGarcia281 My birds lay eggs and a couple times they even hatched but they let the hatchlings die so i wouldn't take them to the vet >:( Still, I've had some die of old age
There is no limit to what I would spend on my pets. They're not Just pets, they're part of the family. However if my pet's chances of living were low, I wouldn't waste money on pointless hopeless procedures. My dog very recently passed away and I would have spent a million on him if he could have been saved...
C'mon people, you know that dogs and cats are better than people. Think about it. Dogs and cats wouldn't make the negative comments some people are making here.
@IAmTheCthulhu: Cats are less trouble than dogs (I've owned both). Cat owners won't spend $7,000 to heal their cat. They'll adopt a new kitty for $20 and make a down-payment on a new car. It may seem cold, but it is more practical and realistic :)
this has nothing to do with owning a cat or a dog, it generally depends on the person.
and i think people who have pets are generally more loving and caring

instead of spending $5,000 on a sick dog, they should put it to sleep then buy another one later. a lot cheaper than 5 grand. my opinion

If a cat even so much as look at me wrong id snap its neck.
madaznboy 1 year ago

(LOL)
mikkigg 1 year ago

P.S sry for my bad english.

Its funny how u r talking about my mom when ur mom regrets not swallowing.
ahmadclk 1 year ago
@ahmadclk its not just about the fact of an animal life. in general if your not willing to be responsible for a life you enslave then you shouldn't have one at all. If you have a pet but won't take care of it don't waste you're time and the animals.People with that think the way you do are the reason why there are so many animals crowding pound's.They get an animal for kicks and when it gives them issues they think they can do nothing or pawn it on someone else.
xM455xK0NFUZ10Nx 1 year ago
@xM455xK0NFUZ10Nx that's why I don't buy expensive pets, when there is something wrong with my fish, I'm not going to buy $15 medicine when I bought the fish for $2.

Cats are antisocial it's not a mystery.
PObserver 1 year ago

Helicon2112 1 year ago
@Helicon2112 I wan't making a personal value judgment about stray cats. I've only ever had stray cats & presently the two cats living with me are former strays. I'm willing to spend a lot of money on my cats, but I realize I'm probably not normal. I live in Iowa where there are tons of stray cats in rural areas (there isn't a similar population of stray dogs). It's not unusual for farmers to feed cats and so they may consider them pets, but I know most rural people don't put much value on cats.

There is no limit to what I would spend on my pets. They're not Just pets, they're part of the family. However if my pet's chances of living were low, I wouldn't waste money on pointless hopeless procedures. My dog very recently passed away and I would have spent a million on him if he could have been saved...

@IAmTheCthulhu: Cats are less trouble than dogs (I've owned both). Cat owners won't spend $7,000 to heal their cat. They'll adopt a new kitty for $20 and make a down-payment on a new car. It may seem cold, but it is more practical and realistic :)

Honestly, I don't care about other human beings aside from the ones I've established a relationship with.
The only reason I help another human being is if I'm lawfully bound to and/or my animal is not also in harms way.
Other than that, save random infant or my cat of 10 years? Cat of 10 years.
