Reducing the experience of Jesus Christ to that of a drug addict is what I heard from many others during the Jesus Movement of the 1970s. Howebit it drew in a lot of young people but 1 Corinthians 5:17 was taught and many began to experience the "all things have become new."
@TheSoloscriptura Jesus referred to His disciples as "fishers of men," which is a direct reference to their old life. Do you think Jesus didnt understand that his disciples were embracing the new life? Crowder and company have moved on by and large from the drug metaphors. The Charismatic movement disqualifies itself, they are puffed up by what they see and hear just as it's written in Colossians. In Christ we HAVE everything we need---we just need to actually sit down and spend time fellowship with Him and serve one another in love, spend TIME face to face with one another instead of merely giving off 5 minute prayers which is typical in Charismatic churches.

Gifts of the Holy Spirit are for today, but I have seen more power of God in people's lives in "cessational" churches, including myself, than in Charismatic churches...esp this. No power of God, just theatrics. Gifts does not = Spirit-filled. Fruit does. But I bet he mocks that idea. ...and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. @tannopk Who said you were disqualified or not filled with the Holy Spirit? I certainly did not. Crowder certainly did not. John Crowder IS a reactionary, and there is MUCH to appreciate here. I have read his books carefully sifting through everything, and I agree with much of what he is doing, although I dont agree with everything. We need to start by honoring what a person is doing right, which is NOT the spirit in which most people approach this.

Judge not........ or what? You will be judged. I'm not saying that I agree with everything taught in the video but Jesus was rejected and crucified by the leaders of his day. @millerb323 I suggest you look at what happened at pentecost again. Unbelievers thought they were drunk, this isn't a Biblical truth it's just what a bunch of people without God thought. When the Spirit came upon these people they spoke clearly in other languages. Peter stood up and proclaimed the gospel and thousands came to Christ. Crowder has stated that these came "rolling out the door drunk" and that is just not true. Discernment is not judging, but it's something lacking greatly today.

I understand the frustration of a religionist doctrinairre not having a box in which to stuff Crowder, but the refusal to examine this man's actual beliefs before slandering and trashing is an abomination, and an exposure of a callousness to the Spirit beyond comprehension. If Crowder's ministry were exlusively about exposing the mindset of religion and the state of the church, it would be well worth it.

I don't mean to quench the Spirit, I guess right now I am withholding judgement like Gamaliel in Acts 5:34-39. What I am having trouble reconciling are the words used by modern day Christian mystics (MCM) like Crowder and the words Paul uses to describe the life of a person who has the Spirit (Eph 5:18; 2 Tim 1:17). I get the impression that Paul thinks the life of a believer will not parallel the drunkard at all. I might misunderstand Paul though.
@forlife01 Paul said, "Do not judge before the proper time." I believe you are following the Spirit in taking a cautious approach. Crowder is very purposeful in his message and in his lifestyle, so in that sense he is not living his life like a drunkard AT ALL. He is simply saying that being "full of the Spirit" can be much more tangible than people think.
In the subsequent discussions we will have I in no way am trying to make any judgments about pastor Crowder's status as a Christian or his personal life. It is the conduct of his services and the content of his message that I am trying to make sense of here and hope you can help me. Please don't see anything I say as a personal attack against him.

@forlife01 As far as the apparent contradiction of I Cor 4:5 and I Cor 5:13, that is a good question. I believe it has to do with the clarity of the issue and the sphere we walk in. If a person is clearly in sin and it has become common knowledge in a sphere where that is possible, then yes, we "judge" in the sense of confronting the sin. However, if there is ANY ambiguity or lack of clarity, where there is a division among believers as to the nature of the issue, IT IS TIME TO BACK OFF!!
@forlife01 The parable of the tares teaches exactly the same thing Paul is teaching, when he says, "dont judge before the proper time." Jesus is saying there are some things that need to be left alone, and when we don't follow this CLEAR INSTRUCTION, we make a royal mess of the body of Christ. Over and over I see people butcher scripture to satisfy their unbelief. They simply dont believe God works in a particular way regardless of COUNTLESS testimonies to the contrary.
I think we have found common ground among the parable of the tares. Whatever the motives, as long as Christ incarnated, crucified, and resurrected is being preached as the only way to the Father then no snap judgment should be made about a particular movement. I plan on buying Crowders book "Ecstacy of God" and Goll's book "The Lost Art of the Presence of God" and a book about Roman Catholic Mystics to study this issue farther and that way I can better make sense of this.
I would add in addition to the incarnation, death and resurrection also the believers are implored to walk in the spirit which produces the fruit of the spirit as well as encouraging the believers to the service of God and neighbor ... if those conditions are being met no judgement should be snap, I agree. Like you said, no one is perfect and so while we have sincere hearts we might have to alter some beliefs if they do not pass the test of scripture. Thank you for talking with me.
@forlife01 When people like Crowder testify of things in the supernatural they see or experience, these are genuinely things that need to be tested over time. I know MANY people who have been challenged positively by Crowder. These are seasoned, mature, Spirit-filled Christians. And yes, many of these people are aware enough to know some of the areas where the man needs balance. He is not perfect, but he is a genuine believer completely sold out to God.
He comes across as very sincere, I have no doubt that he loves God. This tradition is new to me and so I am reconciling with a lot of terms that I wouldn't normally associate with Christianity, then again, John was converted while in an Acid trip (very cool testimony btw) so that helps me sympathize with his methods ad rhetoric a bit more. However, it still makes me uncomfortable, so I guess I'm still suspending judgment.
If you have any books or authors that you can recommend to better help me understand the core beliefs and practices of this tradition I would greatly appreciate it. I don't want to make a judgment and not have the best sources.
@forlife01 Both of his book, "The New Mystics," and "The Ecstasy of Loving God," or the shorter book, " Mystical Union" will give you most of what you want to know about where Crowder is coming from. His short videos on Youtube know as "The Jesus Trip" will also give you an idea of what he believes on numerous issues. A great book to read is Ben Dunn's "The Happy Gospel." This will challenge you. So when Paul says in I Cor 4 to give over to God those areas where God alone knows the motives of men's hearts, and where Jesus says the exact same thing in the parable of the tares, he is implementing a higher law in order to avoid the kind of destructive mayhem that comes in judging things out of ignorance. And not only out of ignorance, but out of a fundamental dishonesty that certain scriptures apply when they clearly DO NOT.
I Cor 6:3 "Do you not know that we will judge angels?" Yes, in this sense we are above the angels. Yes, the blood of Christ is intoxicating. Gifts of the Holy Spirit are for today, but I have seen more power of God in people's lives in "cessational" churches, including myself, than in Charismatic churches...esp this. When the Spirit came upon these people they spoke clearly in other languages. Peter stood up and proclaimed the gospel and thousands came to Christ. Crowder has stated that these came "rolling out the door drunk" and that is just not true. Discernment is not judging, but it's something lacking greatly today.

Miss quoting scripture is one reason the Church is in such a mess. The way "you" put it is what eastern mystic's believe.. everything flows from out of the belly. The word of God is nothing to be triffled with. This is how so many are decieved.

I understand the frustration of a religionist doctrinairre not having a box in which to stuff Crowder, but the refusal to examine this man's actual beliefs before slandering and trashing is an abomination, and an exposure of a callousness to the Spirit beyond comprehension. If Crowder's ministry were exlusively about exposing the mindset of religion and the state of the church, it would be well worth it.

I don't mean to quench the Spirit, I guess right now I am withholding judgement like Gamaliel in Acts 5:34-39. What I am having trouble reconciling are the words used by modern day Christian mystics (MCM) like Crowder and the words Paul uses to describe the life of a person who has the Spirit (Eph 5:18; 2 Tim 1:17). I get the impression that Paul thinks the life of a believer will not parallel the drunkard at all. I might misunderstand Paul though.

Crowder is very purposeful in his message and in his lifestyle, so in that sense he is not living his life like a drunkard AT ALL. He is simply saying that being "full of the Spirit" can be much more tangible than people think.

@forlife01 As far as the apparent contradiction of I Cor 4:5 and I Cor 5:13, that is a good question. I believe it has to do with the clarity of the issue and the sphere we walk in. If a person is clearly in sin and it has become common knowledge in a sphere where that is possible, then yes, we "judge" in the sense of confronting the sin. However, if there is ANY ambiguity or lack of clarity, where there is a division among believers as to the nature of the issue, IT IS TIME TO BACK OFF!!

Jesus is saying there are some things that need to be left alone, and when we don't follow this CLEAR INSTRUCTION, we make a royal mess of the body of Christ. Over and over I see people butcher scripture to satisfy their unbelief. They simply dont believe God works in a particular way regardless of COUNTLESS testimonies to the contrary.

I think we have found common ground among the parable of the tares. Whatever the motives, as long as Christ incarnated, crucified, and resurrected is being preached as the only way to the Father then no snap judgment should be made about a particular movement. I plan on buying Crowders book "Ecstacy of God" and Goll's book "The Lost Art of the Presence of God" and a book about Roman Catholic Mystics to study this issue farther and that way I can better make sense of this.

I would add in addition to the incarnation, death and resurrection also the believers are implored to walk in the spirit which produces the fruit of the spirit as well as encouraging the believers to the service of God and neighbor ... if those conditions are being met no judgement should be snap, I agree. Like you said, no one is perfect and so while we have sincere hearts we might have to alter some beliefs if they do not pass the test of scripture. Thank you for talking with me.

@forlife01 When people like Crowder testify of things in the supernatural they see or experience, these are genuinely things that need to be tested over time. I know MANY people who have been challenged positively by Crowder. These are seasoned, mature, Spirit-filled Christians. And yes, many of these people are aware enough to know some of the areas where the man needs balance. He is not perfect, but he is a genuine believer completely sold out to God.

He comes across as very sincere, I have no doubt that he loves God. This tradition is new to me and so I am reconciling with a lot of terms that I wouldn't normally associate with Christianity, then again, John was converted while in an Acid trip (very cool testimony btw) so that helps me sympathize with his methods ad rhetoric a bit more. However, it still makes me uncomfortable, so I guess I'm still suspending judgment.

@forlife01 Both of his book, "The New Mystics," and "The Ecstasy of Loving God," or the shorter book, " Mystical Union" will give you most of what you want to know about where Crowder is coming from. His short videos on Youtube know as "The Jesus Trip" will also give you an idea of what he believes on numerous issues. A great book to read is Ben Dunn's "The Happy Gospel." This will challenge you. I have posted a comment on your profile with more info.

So when Paul says in I Cor 4 to give over to God those areas where God alone knows the motives of men's hearts, and where Jesus says the exact same thing in the parable of the tares, he is implementing a higher law in order to avoid the kind of destructive mayhem that comes in judging things out of ignorance. And not only out of ignorance, but out of a fundamental dishonesty that certain scriptures apply when they clearly DO NOT.
