  • That's what sailing is all about gentleman...the adventure.

I passed into manhood by sending my father's sailboat to the bottom in 50 feet of water.I got the boat back, but it was ripped up pretty bad. Never found the mainmast or mainsail. Looked everywhere. That was about 39 years ago and he still hasn't forgiven me! Boy I love to sail. Hope your back on the water soon young Wavewalker...

  • if you get some shots of the boat up close please try and get an idea on how much damage there is. if she can float maybe I can find a few freinds in my sailing buddies who might can help get her going again and get the owner back in the sattle...eerr boat yard. lol. I lost a boat after she was stolen and wrecked by my brother and his wife. I hate to see someone else lose a boat.------Bill

  • The same day you posted your message, I happened to be sailing near Reed Island. A local said that the boat had been removed but was so vandalized, it was a loss. Even though this chapter has a sad end, I’m sure Mark will find a way to get back under sail.

  • @markdartist sorry to hear that. If Mark is interested, I run across freebies and cheapo deals...most are left in a boat around VA and the East side of the USA. I even know so great places to take them and do the work needed. lol. hope he gets back in the saddle soon. Bill

  • At least he has the courage to try. It's called living !

  • Did he ever get his boat off the river Mark?? I think it would make a great story told by you as well..

  • Nope, still laying there. I am the previous owner so I drove up the gorge last week and there she was. I am tempted to get someone to take me out there so I can get some photos.

  • Seeing this video of it stranded and taking a beating, it's like I am watching a family member being tortured. We were desperate to stop paying moorage because we both lost our jobs this year. This story is terribly sad to me, I loved the Pearson. The saving grace is that Mark is okay and here to tell the tail. But anyone who has loved and lost a sailboat knows that the best you can hope for is to sell it to someone who will love it as much, if not more that you did.

  • One of my favorite songs is by Ben Folds titled "Bastard." You should listen to it, its pretty good. The chorus includes the following, "So why you gotta act like you know when you don't know?" People love assuming and thinking they know so much more than they do.

That said, the boat was is in great sailing condition and I love sailing and used to spend my summers sailing almost every day. The trip was foolhardy but I will not let this mishap bring me or my spirit down :)

    -Mark

  • No doubt, the tune Bastard is a fabulous warning to us all (especially geezers like me), but the sea (or river) teaches whoever is willing to learn that lesson a lot more vividly than a song. BTW its now on my i-pod.

Any chance the boat can still be rescued? Could a local sailor be of any help?

The most successful person isnt the genius, but one who seeks knowledge and help

Can you guess why I made this video?

  • The boat is still my responsibility to remove from the island so I will have to probably just pay one of the local tug companies to pull it off at high water time. I had hope of rescue before but now it has no mast, boom, motor... I don't see myself being able to practically use it after I pay for its removal and just have to figure out what to do with it. Perhaps sink it? ha ha, jk. It'll all work out :)

I am curious, why on earth did you make this video?

  • I made this video for several reasons. First, I admire your spirit and hope that by swapping some email or maybe meeting over a cup of coffee, I might hear more of your story. I enjoy writing and think there is much to learn from your adventure.

This story really demonstrates the power of nature and the Columbia River Gorge in particular. Whoever isnt impressed by the wind and waves pounding the sailboat and the icy hills nearby has likely only experienced nature on the Discovery Channel.

  • A 30' sailboat for $2,500 !! Sound like the boat was fixer and need a lot of work done before it ever left Portland in those weather conditions. Combine that with a lack of experience and sailing knowledge and that is a recipe for disaster.
