The purple are only over powered in the sense of killing stuff. Other than that it is a pain waiting for them (especially after you get the "Repugnant Appendage") they aren't immune to any hazards, you have to go into caves to get them, and if you let too many die, you have to re-enter caves to get enough to carry the "Doomsday Apparatus". In comparison to white who have an immunity, a stat bonus, and a special ability (opposed to blue with only an immunity to water)
