You shouldn't be able to see the pig where there is no mirror behind it such as the pigs back end and tail at 0:00; you would have to view it from a higher angle where it was all in the mirror to get the full effect.

@jaes182 It uses two parabolic mirrors. The actual object is placed on the bottom mirror. Generally speaking, the light from the object is then reflected and refocused in the same position in the top mirror, only a hole is cut in it so you can observe the phenomenon. They used to sell these in Edmund Scientific pretty reasonable. Maybe they still do.

@857frank Yes, that's right. They only pass through the reflected image. Edmund scientific used to have a diagram too, showing exactly how the light reflected and refocused. You're probably right on about the work part too. My fingers are always in some stage of mutilation because of metal work.

It's not witchcraft, smoke or mirrors it's physics. The air pressure created by placing the lid on forces the (very light) pig to the top and removing the lid causes a suction that brings it down again to the bottom surface.

If you bounce a ray of light on a parabola it will always reflect through the focal point. Every ray of light hitting the real pig re focuses at the centre giving a virtual image of the pig.
