cheap! that one reason i think they are very good for price i paid 500 for my 306 2 years later no faults other than disk brakes wore out 134,000 miles same head gaskect clucth pump injectors as it came out factory. for 500 that is good he proably spends that proably just on fuel for his cars in a week.

Back in 1996 Jeremy almost rated the 106 GTI the best handling car in the world. He was also a fan of the 205 GTI. I think they were probably talking about buying a new peugeot. Most of which theses days, are crap.

I'm actually surprised at Jeremy Clarkson here on the 306. I mean enjoy listening to JC slag off the awfulc rap which Peugeot builds these days (the 207, 308, 407 etc, all of which are awful), bu the 306 WAS a good car! So was the 106 (especially the GTi).

This is the same Jeremy Clarkson who said "the incredible 306 Gti" and "the 306 Gti is in a league of it's own". He has also praised the 205 Gti in the past. Such contradictions don't surprise me though as he's more of a motoring celeb' than a credible automotive journalist. It's just a shame that so many people are blinded by his fame into believing everything that comes out of his mouth.

I think they are biased against Peugeot! My 308 HDi Sport and 207 HDi Sport are fantastic cars.... My old 307 2L HDi 90 Rapier was an excellent car and my wifes old 206 1.4 HDi 70 Look was a fabulous car. Even my 306 1.9 TD LX I owned before my 307 was also an excellent car. We have owned 9 Peugeot over the past 10 years and they have never let us down. Great cars!!!

@cmagennis927 We have had 14 in the last 4 years! And ours have never let us down either. My Peugeot 306 Dturbo is my first car and I cant find anything bad with it! The handling is spot on an makes me smile everytime i'm on track and i know I can get 50-60 mpg on the way home! Find me a German car that does all of those things for under £500 :)

I've got a 306, it's my 2nd in fact. Most reliable car I know of, and I only got rid of the first because it was old and needed too much doing to it in one go. Mechanically it was sound, it just had bad bodywork and had a swimming pool in the foot well.

The older peugeots were great. My dad has 1994 405 diesel estate for farm work, with 320,000 on the clock and still going strong, and it gets some abuse. He also had a diesel 406 with starship miles. Can`t say they`re bad cars. Not so sure about the current range though.

Heh just Clarkson being Clarkson, he was actually very positive about the 306 gti-6 and the basic 306 at the time. His problem quite rightly is with the current Peugeot line up, which is pretty dire.

None, the 306 dominated the s2000 class when it was in, and it won several production class series (BTCC)

The golf being in motorsport? it doesn't need to because other brand in VW group doing MS you mentioned BTCC for exemple

@jarrus464 Your bet is wrong.it wasn't a GTi tho but it was a 306. lol the 306 has never and i mean never outsold a golf and even if you combine all the sells from the 309 306 307 and 308 combined you won't reach the sells from 2 generation of golfs, the gold had passed the 25million cars some years ago while the 30x peugeot never reached 4million. the golf 3 is faster than the 306 the only slow golf GTI was the 4 and the reason was because of a certain S3 that came out in the same generation.

the 306 out sold everything in the UK market, they won tonnes of campionships in the s2000 class wrc, they won tonnes of championships in the production class BTCC, the citoren xara won the WRC top class more times than i can count, and guess what? it's based on a pug 306!! I see far more 306's on the road than mk3 or 4 golfs, funny that....seriously VW is purely badge engineering!

Super 2000 is a class in where there isn't much cars to beging, i ll ask you to list them for me for the fun! the Xsara is not based on the 306 lol, they don't even have the same wheel base lenght so it is impossible to be based upon it not like a golf a leon and A3 for exemple
