this is one of the only albums i can listen to from beginning to end without ever feeling the need to do much as pause it for anything. the world waits for the downward spiral. the downward spiral does not wait for the world.
I get this overwhelming feeling of oblivion when i listen to this, like my mind is about to collapse and then as it fades away and i lay in the cold with the broken remnants that is my pathetic life i realise im going to be ok...
What alot of people dont know or care was this album was recorded in the Polanski house where Sharon Tate and three friends Abigail Folger Voytec Frikowski and Jay Sebring were murdered by the MANSON FAMILY on August 9th 1969.
The equipment was standing on the exact place where Sharon & jay died.
The title track from the best NIN album. A real message of wtf fuck this. And more appropriate than ever as music and culture evolves towards greater and greater hopeless ridiculous evil bullshit from hell.
Trent Reznor showed up on the scene about '85, before he starred in Light of Day movie to help out on keyboards while I wrote songs. I wrote Head Like A Hole and Closer for him. I had just seen the movie Real Genius with Tom Cruise's friend Val Kilmer. There is a line in the movie Real Genius which I repeated to Trent. "Can you hammer a six inch spike...?" This was inspiration for the band name Nine Inch Nails. He thought the initials (NIN) would look good on a logo.
Listening to this album for the first time....I can honestly say that it is one of the best 90's albums. The feelings of despair and hopelessness that creep through it are amazing. They make one feel as if they are truly understood. I have a lot of favorite 90's bands (Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins etc.) NIN just made the list.
this album changed my life. just about EVERYTHING trent did made me feel understood on a deeper level. almost as if we became one for that moment. feeling music is way better than simply listening and studying it. he executes that perfectly. <3
Not many albums have changed me or affected me as much as TDS did. Helped me through some really dark feelings of despair. I'm just glad Trent is still here and still making awesome music.
I hate when I type in NIN The D- The Day The Whole World Went Away comes up, not that I don't like that song, but hardly anyone (population-wise) has heard this song and/or album.
@awake352 Well, I mean, it's hard to say if a lot of people didn't buy it just to hear Closer and Hurt, a huge amount of people usually only care about singles and hardly anyone realizes the vast meaning of this album. I wouldn't be surprised if most people just skipped this track all together.
I just love the pain, the anger, the sexuality, the darkness, the fealing of despair that is "the downward spiral". this album is one of if not the best album ever.
This album, along with the Fragile, are immense. The production jobs alone have such a life to them, giving the music flesh and blood to compliment their audible expression.
Reznor was just brilliant with sound effects and mixing. I hate the way modern albums sound, so over compressed and dry.
So tired of today's alternative and metal music. Everything being based on flair and tech, not substance.
When I first listened to this song after downloading it onto my iPod, I remember just feeling....numb.. and scared at the same time. Those weird looping noises, the flies buzzing. "OMG I BETTER TAKE THIS SONG OFF BEFORE MY MOM HEARS THIS!!"
At that point, I didn't really care. Horrified, listening to Trent's screams at the end. Yeah.. I went through a Downward Spiral too. But somehow, most of his awesome, fucked up music helped me heal.
shit yes , i grew up listening to this . one of the first cds i ever owned . this and korn self titled . . good shit . makes little boys grow to be crazy fucks down for their shit . .thanx for uploading this whoever you are.
@schmagoogal You have another video with the same title, except it's The Bottom remix by coil.
Just figured if you still read these comments one year later, that you'd like to fix that to avoid confusion. I know on the other video with this same title, another person said the same thing I was saying, except in a VERY rude fashion. :P
