As a guy who first hopped aboard the Enz bandwagon in '82 when "Six Months in a Leaky Boat" made waves Stateside, I was initially put off by the early-days Enz footage and songs (like "Lovey Dovey" here). However, I've gained a considerably deeper appreciation of the early Enz ('73-'76) as I've grown older. To have seen these guys live in those first couple of years must have been amazing
Now this is true entertainment!!! This is a group who I would pay top dollar to go see if they would go on tour again in full makeup and suits. Vaudeville style genre that would could keep my attention wondering what they are going to do next. They were great and I wish they would reunite and come to the U.S. Get Phil back too! It would be a dream come true to see them all together again. Thanks Guys for all your hard work!
I always loved the early 80's (80-81-82) look and makeup, which was so new wave to me, but had no idea they originally had this whole clown look - it fits the era, but glad they got rid of it!
classic? no this music is still very much new and it still fascinates me like the 1st time I heard it.. 33 years ago!! (I was 17 at that time.. gosh).. genius!
Surely an inspiration for Madness with their onstage larking about and general nuttiness, as well as the mix of styles. They appealed to my liking of early Sparks and Roxy Music. The ending alone simultaneously evokes the worlds of both "Fletcher Honorama" and "Roger" from Sparks' debut LP. Mental Notes was a great album, very ambitious, lop-sided, and totally surreal. Right up my tree, then. Anyone got a version of "You're My Best Friend"? Please post it immediately...
Tim Finn sat in the seat in front of me at the U . Shrinivas(South Indian) concert in Auckland a few weeks ago.Good thing he didn't have this hair style now.I could hardly see the tabla player as it was!
I had the pleasure of interviewing Split Enz and seeing their show in NYC in 1977. I loved their 1st two LPs - creative, great musicianship and very strange stage show.
Split Enz was way ahead of their time with style and music. Awesome color outfits and hairdo's for 1976. Being from the states we didn't start seeing styles like this until the early to mid 80's. Spit Enz are not only genius, but very hard working musician's. I hope they reunite again and tour the states in the near future.
This song is fantastic! My two favourite bits are the bigband/rockabilly synchetism at 2:30-2:48, and the vocal ensemble at closure, beginning with the piano chord at 3:05... I first heard Split Endz at 14, when I was compliling my first Beatles' collection through cassettes borrowed from friends in school: A schoolmate heard about it, and offered to to "put a rare Beatles record he had onto a blank cassette of mine." I didn't know better, then, so I wondered about this band's name for a while..
Watch the bass player....I just love his energy! That's one of the reasons music videos are so appealing to me; when it's a concept video, let the director take over. When it's a performance video I want to see the musicians let loose. Thanks for the post JimEAPG!
Mike Chunn was in my opinion a WONDERFUL performer-ALOT better than Nigel Griggs in both his stage presence and technical skills. Further, Mike was an expert at playing off his bandmates:he actually ENHANCED the performance of the lead singer. Watch Chunn in later videos with Citizen Band(the band he had with his brother Geoff)and you will still MARVEL at Chunn's stage charisma!
Personally, from all of what I've heard, early Split Enz (meaning prior to Tim taking lead and Neil joining) was a just way too bizarre and almost prog-rock like for my tastes. I prefer the later poppy stuff. This is an exception. I like this one, even if it is still overly weird. But you can always depend on Tim Finn.
thank u so much i never saw any video for the fabulous Mental notes album , so after 31 years i am feeling like an teenager again thank u for bringing me bak at the good old days ! i love that song !!!!

The Enz songs were all so strong, they had there reasons for taking on this persona.

They went to the UK around this time and into 77. The media got them confused with punk.

Saw them a few times in this guise. They looked like a flock of diseased parrots and they were WONDERFUL.
Shame they turned to shite after the 2nd album.

Tbh I always thought both of them looked a little out of place and not in keeping with the rest of the band.

The guy dancing away in yellow seems to play bass, so his name should be Jonathan Chunn.

oh come on nothing, the Beatles were never this weird, except on 'You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)'.
And you must be the last person on earth to spell the Beatles' band name incorrectly. I hope.

1976! So far ahead of their time, visually and sonically. A grossly underated and unfairly ignored band, here in the states at least.
