17.b3? is a poor move, but it's 19.Ne2? from which White's defeat stems. This position has happened before in a game from 1952, in which White played 19.Rb1. After 19...Qxd4 20.Qf3, Black is a pawn up, but it is not hopeless for White. In fact, in the 1952 game White managed to salvage a draw.
After 19.Ne2, Black walks over White for the rest of the game.
Pause at 10:38. White's move Kh1. Black Bg5. White Ph4. Black Bf6. White Rook takes pawn on d4. Now Black is down to just the queen against two Knights and a Rook? How is this not a better situation for white? After Kh1, black could have responded with Qg6, but he still loses the bishop, and now he has to make a choice between the Qg6 or Pd2. Black Qc6 after Kh1? Even so, Ktd2, Black bishop recaptures and Rook recaptures again? Maybe Qc1 after white Ktd2? Kh2, Qd2, Rd2, Bd2? More P's black win?
In my opinion it wasn't really a win by "chess means". There was no "amazing" play just standard theory a blunder and basic tactics. I think it was more of a condsiderable underestimation from the GM that didn't seem to put much effort into the game.
and a GM with 2407 isn't really a GM (just on paper he is)
After Qc3, isn't Bb2 the best response for white? Saves the rook and the attacked knight and only gives up the good but inactive black square bishop? After the knight sac, I think it keep material even as well, no? Let me know, Jrobi :)
Wow. Truly a giant-killing match if there ever was one in chess. If you can beat a GM at the age of 9, I predict he'll be really up there with karpov, kasparov, fischer perhaps?
And he was black (no offense intended lol) as well, amazing. I'm jelous of his Chess Skills, I'll never be that good. :P
and at 10.09, after black moves pawn to h6 why didn't white simply move f1 knight to d2 taking the pawn then if black bishop takes the d2 knight white rook takes the bishop then its 1 rook and 1 knight against the queen the GM didnt need to resign any thoughts on this 1 aswell??
at 5.24 what if white moved his c1 bishop to b2 then if black queen takes b2 bishop then white moves e1 rook to e2 so now e2 rook is defending c2 bishop and white queen is defending both rooks the c2 bishop and the d4 knight thus allowing plenty queen trade chances any thoughts on this??
ERRRR the grandmaster played like an absolute dick.
Anyone can win against a grandmaster depending on his age, or if you catch him at a bad psychological time.
chess players are like boxers they peak at a certain age. Also it's obvious if you understand psychology of chess that what happened in this game was a spiral down. the grandmaster couldn't handle the fact that he got into a slightly worse position and spiraled down instead keeping composure. HAPPENS ALL THE TIME strong opponenets spir
I never saw the match, but I think the GM was cocky. He or she underestimated there opponent probably due to there opponents youth and assume inexperience in chess. The GM probably made an error in judgment. Then after the blunder, he or she got frustrated when he or she couldn't gain the better position against the younger assume less experience player.
white played REALLY bad after the initial mistake which i dont think was a game ender ! it seemed like he just gave up those atacks on the queen where pathetic !!! 1 rook down isnt a game ender
I think that it is interesting to watch how calculated all of his moves are. I was looking over the game and I am not sure what he could have done later on in some instances, but I do agree that believing that Hetul Shah would make a mistake was a major error. Just considering the possible proffesional responses would have discounted many of the moves. Once again proving the need to never underestimate.

@loduuu1 Wikipedia isn't wrong. Hetul Shah is the youngest player to defeat a grandmaster under STANDARD TIME CONTROLS. David Howell beat a GM in a BLITZ GAME.
Your comment isn't correct, In 1999 David Howell became the youngest player to beat a grandmaster at the age of 8. Hetul had an awesome accomplishment by being the youngest player in India to defeat a grandmaster, however.
The 9 year old was very talented, but at the same time the Grand Master played without any thought. For him to resign at the end was rediculous. He could have turned it around. Or atleast forced a draw. At the final stage, he could have definately moved the king from check, pressed an attack on the bishop, then protected the pawn at H3 while pushing to a promotion. Hah. That 9 year old now has quite the story for the grandkids.
by having chances to draw, do you mean the GM would've had to whittle the pieces down until there are just two kings remaining? seems quite a task considering how Hetul had played thus far.
(relatively new to chess, sorry. i don't see many draws take place)
Resigning was right. Im no expert but should Kh1 then Id play Qf2 threatening f2 protecting d2 and f4 even if white doesnt move and blocks the path of check with Ne3 then you'd just trade off all ur pieces then promote the pawn. Those a just a few ways to really destroy white from this position
I disagree - in fact I was very excited about his accomplishment which was the inspiration for this video. However, it's incorrect to say he is the youngest player in the world to defeat a grandmaster. That goes to 8 year old David Howell.
Why would I re-phrase an accurate statement? He is the youngest chess player in India to defeat a GM, which is what I said, but he isn't the youngest player ever to defeat a GM in tournament play. I might do a video on Howell's accomplishment at some point, though. Thanks for checking out the vid!
9 years? I think Im just goin to commit suicide, that was brilliant game for such a young person.
However its true that, this so called "GM" make many mistakes. Nurlan Ibrayev definitely underestimate his opponent and I think this game was big kick for his Ego :)))
Rook(tower) to b1 is actually not that good, but a blunder, worse than knight to e2 which the grandmaster played. If Rook to b1 then just pawn takes knight, the other knight has to move, and then the queen just takes the bishop at c2. This is much worse than what happened in the game, because knight+bishop>rook.

And dropping the queen like that was pretty astonishing. Do you happen to know if he was in time trouble at that point?
Not really. Just think about it: if ratings didn't exist, then we would just think of a good player as a really great chess player instead of what his rating was.
Ecstaciiccchak: We do that anyway, ratings are there to quantify how good a chess player is instead of going just on qualitative evidence. And we created a rating system to do just that, so they have meaning. This video is to show that we're human and we make mistakes, not to show that ratings have no meaning.
probably made a mistake just because thought he could be lazy and felt sorry. It feels horrible to completely wreck someone you outclass. Then again, he looks really stupid for losing
when Shah moved the Qc7 to c3.. Nurlan could have moved Bc1 to b2 instead of Nd4 to e2 >.> but 9 year old beats GM... thats a striking headline in history lol
well i cant understand how would a GM didnht see 3 moves ahead when he made the blunt :/ i mean didihnt he notice the c square stays alone? congrats to the boy really good game for a 9 year old :)
Hi jrobi, thanks for the sharing the video, Hetul Shah was quite remarkable to say the least, but was helped a bit from the GM blundering, but all credit for hm acknowldeging the weak queen side and maintaining advantage further more.
at 5:41, why doesnt the grandmaster just move the rook and let the pawn take the knight. their material would still be equal wouldn't it? anyone mind clearing that up for me?
It would have been better for the GM to save the rook, no question, but black would be up a pawn. The GM definitely made a mistake, but more interesting was that the nine year old not only maintained the advantage, but did so in a very clear and decisive way. Definitely a great game.

Ecstaciiccchak: We do that anyway, ratings are there to quantify how good a chess player is instead of going just on qualitative evidence. And we created a rating system to do just that, so they have meaning. This video is to show that we're human and we make mistakes, not to show that ratings have no meaning.

It's mindboggling watching GM games. Amazing.
KemaTheAtheist 2 years ago
Couldn't the GM have been thinking about trapping the Queen with Bb3 then Bb2 after b4? Just a thought.

Not a big chess-fan but it was a cool video :D great story in the beginning

probably made a mistake just because thought he could be lazy and felt sorry. It feels horrible to completely wreck someone you outclass. Then again, he looks really stupid for losing

numbcore 2 years ago
Underestimated is correct. It's still not an excuse to not play serious...so good job to the tyke.
GoldSamuraiArmor 2 years ago
Amazing that a nine year old can be that good at chess. The GM was prolly just having a bad day, total fluke. :P
TheChadSitze 2 years ago
when Shah moved the Qc7 to c3.. Nurlan could have moved Bc1 to b2 instead of Nd4 to e2 >.> but 9 year old beats GM... thats a striking headline in history lol
acollyte33 2 years ago
I see at least 3 moves ahead, this 9 year old is amazing though, dang!!!!!!
pwnwner 2 years ago
also, instead of moving it from C1 to C3, I would have moved it from C1 to CD1

9 years old age was the deadliest weapon.
i guess the GM undermined the little one, any way good game by Shah.

Great game, that is insane that he beat a grandmaster at age 9.
What program do you use to review the games? I have an FICS account and would like to review some of my gameplays to become a better player.

Hi jrobi, thanks for the sharing the video, Hetul Shah was quite remarkable to say the least, but was helped a bit from the GM blundering, but all credit for hm acknowldeging the weak queen side and maintaining advantage further more.

at 5:41, why doesnt the grandmaster just move the rook and let the pawn take the knight. their material would still be equal wouldn't it? anyone mind clearing that up for me?
cchr1SB 3 years ago
It would have been better for the GM to save the rook, no question, but black would be up a pawn. The GM definitely made a mistake, but more interesting was that the nine year old not only maintained the advantage, but did so in a very clear and decisive way. Definitely a great game.

Hi, jrobi,
I'm a Japanese and I've been uploading Shogi (Japanese chess) lesson videos in English for several months, and recently I found your chess videos. They're great. I think your videos are the best chess videos in youtube.
The softwware you're using is also great. The graphics is good and it shows many arrows, circles, and highlighted squares. I wish there were that kind of software for Shogi, too.
I'm learning a lot from your videos. Keep up the great work.

beelal123 3 years ago
when he forked the rook and knight couldn't he just move the rook because the knight is protected by the queen?
beelal123 3 years ago
It would be taken by the pawn

Great video, and that was some serious skill. Jrobi, I'm in need of some help, I can play my pieces well, but I'm, horrible at setting up my pawns, can you make or direct me to a video that can give me some tips or theory on how to do so? My pawn game isn't bad, but it isnt great. Thanks in advance

after ...Bf8, you said that a better continuation would have been dxe5 nxd5
Bd2 Bc6
Nf5, but then, what is wrong with . . .g6?
Rappster16 3 years ago
Wow. This must've really sucked for the grandmaster.
chasingjustice 3 years ago 2
correct: Nurlan Ibrayev vs Hetul Shah , because 9yo is black pieces.

It's the name of the video not a PGN file. Shah's name goes first. =)
