@42base13 There is far more evidence that we did in fact go to the moon than the evidence for Jesus's existence, the resurrection or that he was the son of a god.
I would say the strongest pull for holding on to ones religious belief is the "religious experience". It causes people to look past reason, intentionally or not.
Regardless of its validity as a supernatural phenomenon, people do have have them, I had them( when I was a christian) along with many people i knew.
When it can be thoroughly explained scientifically why and how this "experience" can happen to a person, I bet most religions will loose quite a large number of followers.
You see, all it takes to see that any religion is absurd, is intelligence and the ability to read. And if you read from all perspectives and views e.g.. the Bible, Koran, Creationism, Science, evolution and so on.You can only come to one conclusion.............Religion and the belief in gods is crazy.
If somebody dug up the casket that Elvis was buried in, then opened it, they would have some excellent evidence of whether or not Elvis is dead or alive. Have evolutionists dug up any Hominid skeletons? Heck, they wouldn't even need a court order for that.
Christianity is founded on a historic fact, Christ's resurrection from the dead. That is the answer to both the question of "Why do we believe in Christ?" and "What evidence could disprove God?"
If Christ did not rise from the dead, then our faith is in vain. The Resurrection is the foundation of Christianity. It is the proof and the sign God gave you that He exists. If you could disprove it, you could disprove Christianity.
@42base13 There is NO evidence for the resurrection of Jesus Christ other than a Stone Age book. You can claim that people witnessed it, but anecdotal evidence is insufficient. People claim that Elvis is not really dead, and we don't take them seriously, right?
Showing that Jesus's tomb is NOT evidence that he resurrected. In fact, the simpler explanation for why his tomb would be empty are: Jesus never existed; Jesus's body was moved; Jesus didn't die there; etc.
@DeadFishFactory Ultimately, multiple eyewitness testimony is all we have. You've never actually been on the moon, you've never seen anyone there. (pictures can be faked) Yet you believe, quite reasonably, that because large numbers of people testify that men went there that, they did, in fact, go there.
Large numbers of people at CERN testify in writing that some event occurred, and you believe them tho you never saw it yourself.
@42base13 We can verify their claims. You really want to know if we landed on the moon? Shine lasers off the mirrors that the astronauts put there.
You want to verify the claims of the CERN scientists? Become a particle physicist and join them and see that their data is accurate.
How do you verify the claims that Jesus resurrected? You can't. There is NO known instance of ANYONE ANYWHERE coming back from the dead (and becoming God, rendering the sacrifice moot), so how do you verify?
@DeadFishFactory If you haven't done those things, you are only relying on eyewitness testimony. You can reject eyewitness testimony if you chose, but don't claim that it doesn't exist.
@42base13 Here's the thing: I trust scientists and science. I theoretically COULD do the experiments myself to verify--that is what science is all about. If you do not trust a scientist's claim, or you think they are in error, then look through their findings and replicate their research.
I am perfectly fine with taking a scientist at their word. I DO NOT extend the same trust to religious individuals. There are no other instances of resurrection ever taking place.
@42base13 I never said that eye witness testimonies didn't exist. I said that they aren't always the most accurate. Just because there are eye witness testimonies of Jesus coming back from the dead means that he did any more than eye witness testimonies about seeing Elvis alive today means that he is alive today.
@DeadFishFactory I've never heard of 100 people reporting they saw Elvis at the same time.
But that would apply to all of history. You can't independently do an experiment to prove that Christopher Columbus ever lived, but you take the word of historians because multiple witnesses testified that he existed.
@42base13 God damn, you're stupid. We have multiple accounts of Christopher Columbus--all of which DO NOT COME FROM ONE BOOK. We don't have ONE book that claims multiple accounts. We ACTUALLY HAVE independent multiple accounts of Christopher Columbus's existence.
The eye witness accounts of Jesus ALL come from the Bible, and no where else. We do not have independent sources of the contemporary account of Jesus Christ, let alone his resurrection.
@42base13 And that's the other thing; not only do we need independent sources, but the sources must not contradict what we know about the universe. Historians can accept the account that Christopher Columbus wanted to find a route to India, but mistaken the distance and ended up on what we know as America. What historians won't accept as true is the account that Christopher Columbus sailed his ship to outer space and battled aliens, but was hit and crash-landed in America.
@42base13 You can't rely solely on testimonies because people lie or misunderstood what they saw. If you claim that it is FAITH, then don't claim that the resurrection of Christ is a historical fact.
and THEN of course theres numerous rifts amoungst atheists, some believe in the para-normal however by definition that cannot apply- some believe that they have to spread the message of non-belief etc. We are human we do these things.
Atheists BELIEVE in the non-existence. That is a belief.... so therefore it can not be the default state. A = anti Theism= well you see where I am going. Im not disagreeing with any of you- I am simply stating from an etymological standpoint, we are born agnostic. A= anti Gnostic= knowledge. Know what happens in our first few years of life- thats different. Children believe in all sorts of things that don't exist.
i think you all are missing the simplicity of what i am saying. "Agnostic (from Ancient Greek ἀ- (a-), meaning "without", and γνῶσις (gnōsis), meaning "knowledge") " wikip or anywhere else. So simply by definition we are born without knowledge. Now all of your arguments are valid if we use the def. of agnostic as "agnostic theists (who believe a God exists but do not claim to know that)." or how etc- But i am not. It means without knowledge We are born in that default state.
continued... we are born without knowledge. We learn and discover, just like we discovered the different aspects of science, and we continue to learn things not yet discovered. We are by default without knowledge, therefore agnostic.
Hey I really like your video and everything you say except I believe the default position is agnostic. Agnostic means- without knowledge. Atheist- by definition as I understand have proof and/or knowledge on the non-existence of a power outside of science (whether that be god or ghosts etc.... real atheists do not believe in anything supernatural). Setting evidence of unexplained phenomena aside- we are born without knowledge.
@tribalstyle138 You're confusing two different things when you compare atheism and agnosticism like you do. Theism and atheism deals with belief, and you can ask whether belief is justified. Whether your beliefs amount to knowledge or not is irrelevant to that question. Agnosticism is not a third alternative there. You can see this rather easily when you realize that "Do you believe the statement 'God exists' is true?" is a yes/no question about your mental state.
@tribalstyle138 If you are a blank slate like you propose, then you will answer no to the question. That's what an atheist is. Someone who doesn't believe in gods. Not being able to establish that god exists to a level of knowledge can be a justification for atheism. Nothing more. The demand you put on atheism is just silly as well. We wouldn't even need a word for such a point of view as nobody could hold it reasonably.
"I don't believe in pink unicorns, but if you showed me one I would believe." That is agnosticism towards pink unicorns. An Apinkunicornist would still say there are no pink unicorns after you showed them one.
I am 20 years old, and until now, I have been able to say I'm an atheist. Agnostic sounded a bit "better" because people shun atheists, or someone who doesn't really believe in anything theological. But I am quite happy to be this way.
Wow, I felt the same way in high school. I used to be Christian, go to church, etc. But couldn't bring myself to believing anything because I, myself have my own experiences.
Eventually, I stopped going to church, praying, and realized that I had been making a conscious/ignorant choice to follow Christianity, which is solely based on faith, not true evidence.
As I was a "non-believer", my family started to notice, and my mom became really ashamed. That was when I was 16.
you sir, are my hero, and you're right there's no way you could change the view of a diehard religious person. And if you ask for proof of a god thingy then they'll something like that an aunt was in the hospital and dying of a terminal disease and all of a sudden she was ok and could live on and it was a miracle and how could we axplain that... Religious people should stop and look at the evidence and the old "if we evolve from monkey's then why are there still monkey's today" is getting old.
I am surprised and bemused that what really sums up the christian argument on this subject I have never seen used in two + years on YouTube, and that is ".Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be."
Good videos. “You and I are both atheist with respect to the vast majority of gods mankind has ever invented. When you understand why you reject all the others, you understand why I reject yours.” I like that. I’m a former evangelical Christian and now generally think myself a basics Taoist. Any “evidence” I can offer about Tao is how I live, not what I say. Taoism holds that a “believer: has no advantage over others in experiencing and expressing Tao.
when someone is lovingly sharing the truth with you and you say "stop it" they will. sure. notice you didn't reject any of my assumptions so we will assume you are trying to justify immorality. its a mind game with a bitter ending. Enjoy this life, its "the best" things will ever be for you for eternity. If you are born once, you die twice, if you are born twice you die only once. At your request I will delete my links to you. GLTA Joe
Think seriously and do resarch about this. The pictures that you see of other planets in the universe, are they autentic or sience fiction? Have you done resarch about false fossils? The dinosaurs could they be fake? What are the dinosaurbones really made of? Please do your resarch before trusting people. Do you know that the Bible says that every man is a lier? Do you know a person that never have lied?
Have you seen a dokumentary about the moonlanding? i think it is called moonhoax. look at it with an honest hearth. Do you really belives that we have evolved from apes? Think seriously about that. is such things really possible. And do you belive in a big bang? From where came the explosion? And do you belive all that the sientists are telling you? Why do people loose their hair from cancer treatment if it is good for them? why does it has so many terrible sideeffects?
Don, I wish you the best. I pray for your life. You must be a homosexual and that is the primary reason you deny God. John 7:17 "If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from Myself" You believe what you say because you love darkness rather than light. "in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God" Joe
anyway, you will eventually convert back to faith in God. "every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord" although for you, unless you have a change of heart, this will be at what is called the "Great White Throne Judgement" For believers this will be at the beginning of the millenium reign of Christ, with an eternity of Glory ahead.
Don, I encourage you to revaluate your beliefs. In Genesis 1:1 God created the universe (big bang) and thats billions of years ago. About 6K years ago he created man. Evolution is impossible. Turn to God, He loves you and eternity is ahead. Israel is proof of prophecy, WWIII is coming and the return of Jesus is soon. 666 was not technically possible until now. Don't let sexual perversion destroy your soul? eternity is soon Are you teachable? (or do you have a seared conscience?- what gives?) Joe
Don, I saw your previous video titled "Why I am a Christian". In that video, your "proof" for God was very weak and in this video, your "disproof" of God based on absurd arguments from Hitchens and Harris were pretty shallow as well. Feel free to message me if you want me to provide a solid argument for God's existence, but I suggest you watch some William Lane Craig and John Lennox --- don't waste your time with young Earth creationists.
HI, I am sincere and rarely comment on YouTube. Don says "a God who cares where you put your penis" .....why bring this up? The evidence for creation by God is so overwhelming, there has to be a "reason" to believe otherwise. Scripture makes many prophecies that have come true (40 authors, 66 books all in agreement). The truth is clear if you are willing to do God's will. (John 7:17). I am guessing Don is gay as the "leverage" to push him away from the truth. (Romans 1:21) Joe (former atheist)
My best guess is that Don may have a secret...that is another reason or motivation something he likes to do that he knows God does not accept......am I right Don? homosexual possibly? just guessing. LIke when a man seeks a divorce there is often a "reason" and that reason is often another woman. how about in your case? (seriously) and not being critical.......Also, there is bunches of codex written into scripture about events today.....no space to detail it here. God please show you His truth!
When you make another video, please answer this question: What do you believe happens to you when you die? Please go into detail instead of saying: There is nothing.
If you make another video, I would like to know: If there is no God, what do you believe happens to you when you die? Please go into detail instead of the basic answer: There is nothing.
Every institution where u reject the rules and rebel, kicks u out. But God creates a world and u and then u rebel and he gives u chance after chance and even suffers the punishment that u deserve, and u still rebel. Yea u get kicked out and out of Gods presence is hell. God tries to warn ppl that it will feel like fire but instead ppl whine and moan that its not fair while they continue their rebellion.
Great job. i couldn't say it better, except to add that the reason Christians think their has to be a creator is they simply can not conceive of billions of years. it is not a stretch to believe microorganisms came into being first and larger organisms grew from there over billions of years.
You practice faith every day. You believe a chair is going to hold you when you sit down, you believe the food you eat is not poison without examing it. Why? Based on your experiance and the reliability of these in the past, same is true with faith it comes with evidance and shows to be true. God has shown himself to be true, answering specific, specific questions I asked him, this is the story of my life with the Lord, many answered prayers and events. I just had one this week infact.
@Yeshuamyhope Be sure in what you are placing your hope and trust in , ie what your faith in is reliable! Your approach to science, the natural world is an approach that is based on your faith in the natural world being all there is, well that of course begs the questions, where did matter energy or anything come from, let alone come together in order, complexity, fixed laws of nature. You really believe everything came into being by random chance!?
We didn't have MC= square at those times but yet we had ancient pyramids that still can not be build to this time. Not even bringing up the fact that they were build in extreme precision with the stars. What's your point??
Did not sound like you were ever a true christian according to the way I understand your words. Were you a true Christian? I hope you are honest! I heard no conversion story of trusting in Jesus for salvation with all your heart. All I heard was alot of "religion", really so you can understand what my point is in one word "hypocrite". Please correct the untrue statement you were a Christian.
@turnerfamilyinozi I am sad for your comments and"ARE YOU BLIND", Did you not read the title" Why i am no longer a Christian" The subject IS about FAITH and I think you seem very immature and lack in good manners.I addressed this message to donexodus2. Please get a life in JESUS that is why he died for you.
Most religious people are so because their parents educated them with those ideas when they were just too young to think from themselves and when they were at the moment of their life where their parents are heroes and examples for them so they copy everything they do and so they become religious... Sad, have you ever realised that the more the science progress the less religion looks 'true' and the more educated people are the more they can think by themselves and the less religious they are!
Fuck DonExodus. This cunting troll can regurgitate nearly everything he's heard on YT to make a point, but what happens when he has another crisis of faith? Islam, this time?
@fdasherv A peaceful and loving christian in action eh! Dont think you understand atheism, its a rejection of god, not christianity, not islam, not hunduism, god!!!
If there actually is an omnipotent creator, let's call it "God", than it does in fact torture people by simply creating an imperfect environment for us to live as well as making the creation (people) defective by nature both physically and mentally.
Simply put, if God exists it's a sadomasochistic who has created the concept of pain and fear only to get us to submit to it by begging it to alleviate that very suffering. Do you not see how sick and twisted this mentality is?
@LadyAmaltheaUnicorn God created everything perfect but satan, devil, lucifer, etc. started to corrupt humanity thats why now a days world has been so much violent & worse thru out the years,,
But see those that are born defective mentally & all that, they stay INNOCENT,,wich gives them a free pass to heaven,(& God creates them for a reason),& we dnt,,ppl now a days are so corrupt & hav perve mentallity that we have to earn heaven, but salvation is individually, its up to us to belive in God or not.
if god/Yahweh created everything perfect than Satan would not have been evil, and thus evil would not exist, so obviously his creating abilities are flawed, or he just likes to punish things for fun, either way....
and I should ask...how does believing in a god equate to salvation? It's like you're being scammed into buying magic invisible beans...so to speak, "give me you money and I'll give you these beans that will grow into an invisible tower to heaven". Gullible
If God created Heaven to be of a higher vibration than Earth, then it was done as part of a master plan. That is not a flaw in design. We are spirits on Earth having a human experience. This is a playground to spiritually evolve. God does not care if we believe in him or not - he is not interested in whether you go to church or not. He is interested in whether or not you have a good heart - and whether you use that heart to love others and to be loved in return.
@jalonzo31 Well considering how a lack of evidence for anything else and saying you need to have faith isn't valid for reality, I don't see why people make exceptions for their religion, sitting your ass on a pew doesn't give you incredible insight on life no matter how you look at it. And if reality doesn't get that excuse, but religion does, one would come to he conclusion that religion. Is not. Reality.
The funny part about the beginning of this video is that Elvis was actually here at one point and we all know that is a fact. So that renders the God argument even more laughable.
@elisavet4eva really? drowing the hole earth, and the innocente babys with it? striking down a first born? torturing the son of david for 7 days untill killim him? was yaweh pleased when the jews where showing mercy to imidiamites? no he was not. he wanted them death, even thou they had done nothing wrong. what did the mothers of egypt learn about yaweh. they learned, that the god of the christians and the jews, is not good. he is not good, he was never good. he was only on their side.
@elisavet4eva i guess i culd tell you about the buddhist that have seen buddha. and about those who have seen mohammed. but it does not mather your god and his proffet are as empy as void it self. you are supperior only in one way, you are better at failing.
i wish i elvis was still alive. he was lot more better then any religius charecter. minus amaterasu................... and afrodite. i dont belive they exist. but damn is afrodite hot.
He doesn't need to prove anything to you, the evidence is all around you. You made this video b/v the Jesus conversation actually sparks interest and emotional feeling.
Your Salvation is in your hands, REMEMBER, Mr Athiest "you all like free will"
Well your' free will' is going to be put to the test.
Jesus " Deny me on earth, Ill deny you in Heaven" God Bless
This guy is a true Idiot, " Just should of just created a math equation like E =MC^2"
Really are u kidding me. I am have a BA in mathematics and i understand that every equation has EXCEPTIONS!!!!!!!!!!! therefore giving a stupid equation would have given error.
@elisavet4eva "If you have faith in him, he will reveal himself." Do you honestly think that this is the first time we've heard that?? That statement has subtle tones of emotional blackmail, fear and shame. Because you and your christies have succumbed to it, do not expect others to do the same. That is NOT freewill and your god is a childish, masochistic prick, which is evidence that men created him in their image and not the other way around. Grow up please.
@elisavet4eva yep a just God comes and personally says hi to others but yet others arent worthy of that and should be tortured forever and forever. That sounds about right
When you talk about elvis being alive how is this in refrence to God or Jesus? Are you talking about life after death theory or heaven hell? I don't understand why you added that in there? Also how can be soo sure that Written history was the truth? The bible isn't even the truth. 3 days later doesn't add up? Good friday and easter sunday? isn't that 2 days? History is filled with lies, how can yu be so sure that what you have studied(wht form did you use?) is true?
your fallacy is that your thinking is limited in the fact you have known only one thing all your life...Earth and what goes on in your bubble. You could never even come close to understnd why God would do what he does. Tthere is a plan and I can't even begin to tell you the details or the reason for it, only God knows that. Maybe there is one God per galaxy and the universe is filled with Gods? Who fucking knows, just as someone can not convince you of Gods exitence you can't tell me he doesn't.
@osodelicious25 "There is a plan and I can't even begin to tell you the details..." Zeus exists and I can't even begin to describe him to you. Your reason for disbelieving me is exactly the same same as mine for disbelieving you. You are an atheist as far as other myths go. Your emotional attachment to one, in particular, does not make it true
There's no evidence that God doesn't exist. The only "evidence" that's ever been brought forth for his existence is experience. Human witness. And that's up for each individual person to decide whether or not they believe. There's plenty of accounts of people experiencing God. Atheists just choose believe, purely on faith, that none of them are real and that the people experiencing them must be delusional. We accept witness testimony in court. Why are you so eager to doubt testimonies about God?
@18TimTom Wrong. There is a ton of evidence and examples where eyewitness testimony has proven totally inaccurate, just google it. "Atheists" have believed, deluded themselves for emotional reasons and have come to realize that wishful thinking does not make something true. Humans are vulnerable and delude themselves a lot. Atheists have just realized this. That's the emotional hook and it allows for all sorts of chicanery on the part of phony preachers, priests, "christians", etc....
...to do good on a day to day basis? Ever heard of Mother Theresa? And there's some gaps in your logic that leading to raving generalizations. If God exists, why doesn't he show himself? Why would he? You're making statements based on how you think God should behave, and not on how he could? Who are you to dictate what God should do and to even think that you would know what's in his best interest?
Nobody's provided with an honest answer. What's an atheist's purpose? If there really is no God, then why do you care what other people believe? Why do you guys always bitterly spout your nonexistence in God? If there's no God, nobody judging what we do, nobody declaring right and wrong, and no after life, then why do you care about what other people believe? Yes, there's examples of people using relgion as an excuse to do evil, but there are equally as many examples of people using religion...
@18TimTom "...then why do you care what other people believe?" Because we have people in our gov't, Bachmann, Perry, Palin (formerly) etc., who actually believe we are in the end times. What possible motivation could they have to really want to improve things? "Christians" are willing to lie about science based on the buy bull, and all this shit has a negative impact on our society and on America. Therefore, it is my business. "Faith" needs to be critiqued more and I am be glad to help.
Can you imagine a world with no religion? it would be a world where everyone would have to use reason to do something. Everyone would have to use their brain to determine if some actions should be taken. WELL THAT DOESNT BENEFIT ANYONE! how am i supposed to declare war against muslim nations if religion does not exist? why would i make the crusades and slaughter milions if ppl have nothing to divide them. how im i supposed to profit if everyone thinks! thats the real point of religion sheepism
Religion is simply a waste of time and mind poisoning. They believe in something that they have completely no evidence at all. If god exists, then why can't he show himself in my room to show me that he exists while I'm typing this? And they say, you just have to have faith. Is he a loving caring god? Or is he a jackass that doesn't care? HEY GOD! YOU SUCK! DO SOMETHING TO PROVE ME WRONG! Sorry, I got nothing. No warnings, no answer, no nothing.
Oh, and by the way. I never said that God cared about me more than anybody. I just said he cared. There's nothing arrogant about saying that something or somebody noticed me and helped me when I had no one.
I'm genuinely interested by the way. I like hearing other people's points of view. It's not an attack on you. It's more just that I'm trying to understand you.
What do you hope for? When we die we die. Life all a waste of time without a God and something after death. When we die, everything we earn in life is stuck here. Most of us won't be remembered by anyone alive 100 years from now. The people who are remembered are people dedicated to a cause. To the betterment of humanity. But what's the point of working to better humanity really? It serves no logical purpose. Especially if we die in the process. What do atheists work for? What's their purpose?
There's evidence enough for God by the fact that I'm alive. By knowing the two years ago I was lying in bed hopeless because my life amounted to nothing more than a spec of matter in an humongous universe. Because at that moment I wanted to to die and end my meaningless life. It was at that moment I FELT a very real God. Clearly you've never felt God. My faith isn't blind. You've replaced God with yourself. You can't save you from death though. Believe what you want, but at least I have hope.
Quit wasting your life. Nobody cares. Just surround yourself with smart people, do cool/creative things with your life, and don't bother trying to convince the willfully ignorant. Leave them in peace with their delusions, we all have them on some level. I hate watching obviously intelligent people getting drawn into this kind of stuff. you are being bated, man.... they still want to change you.
@rs1372 I'm one of those people who get dragged into this nonsense. But I always have the feeling that if I give up, they win. Their point of view would be allowed to be spread like a malignant intellectual cancer. I'm a bit of a radical theoretically, but I'd like to censor religion for as long as the churches of the world have censored others and see how far we get in that time span. We'd be having this conversation on Mars presumably. ;)
@MrY0ufail I think it was Sam Harris that said, and I'm paraphrasing, "If the dark ages never happened, Christopher Columbus would have landed on the moon instead of just discovering the Americas." Nearly 1,000 years of religious oppression of science has had a major impact on our civilization. So i'm all for your censorship of religion. ;)
@Clubbingshawn I'm not sure who said it either, but it was what I had in mind when I wrote this. This world would be beautiful without the division of people who should be working to achieve a common goal, the end of human suffering, and the flourishing of a sustainable civilization that insures happiness and peace as opposed to unjustified violence and hatred over the supposed limited resources of this planet. Thank you for the input. Cheers! :)
@MrY0ufail I can't argue with you man, just have a good life, every good atheist can appreciate the exhortations of the book of Ecclesiastes, "meaningless meaningless says the teacher...."
I believe it has more to do with unwillingness to change, either because somebody has found something that satisfies them, or because a belief system was drilled into their originally-flexible minds as children. Much like a person molested or physically abused as a child, habits driven by the abuse don't go away easily in a person's adult life.
As to your last point: It's perfectly understandable why theists are impermeable in their beliefs, whereas atheists are not. It's simply impossible to prove something doesn't exist. Therefore, if one has taken the leap of faith to believe it does, then there shouldn't be anything to convince them that it doesn't.
Your last point was good. Most atheists would be religious if there was any evidence, but a religious person will rarely change their beliefs in spite of mounds of contrary evidence.
Show me ONE piece of solid, testable evidence. Even anything that is not based on an old collection of writings. I would love to be shown the existence of the Christian god. It would be great to know there is a way to eternal life. Atheism may not be the comfortable position but it is the correct, rational one.
@StormTrek mathematics is not the study of nature and is not used to find out which things exist and which dont. if you claim a god exists, you study it with science. maths dont affect nature and does not study nature. science does. you try to push god to the field other than science because you think you can justifbelief that way. sorry, it does not work that way. the only way to not use science is if you say that god does not manifest in nature at all
You said you were 'never really religious' it seems like you were a 'Christian' as more of a title rather than actually seeking God. Why didn't you actually practice it rather than just looking at it objectively? I know God might not make sense, but unless you give Him a go, how will you truly ever really know??? There simply isn't enough proof either side of the argument both require an element of faith. Your evidence will be there if you seriously try, can you honestly say you gave God a shot?
@StormTrek Logic and epistemology isn't a democracy, and fairness is not an issue here. It's ultimately an issue of which approach causing the least harm to your system of beliefs. Accepting every existence claim without evidence will lead you to believe all kinds of contradictory nonsense. Rejecting them will only have the effect of delaying your acceptance of true claims until evidence is available.
It's really agnostic atheism that ends up being the default though.
@StormTrek In the end, it's the same logic that makes us require evidence before believing in fairies. Not fair to the fairies, but very useful for relating to reality.
@Gnomefro You're right, fairness isn't an issue here. Usefulness is though, as you have indicated. When the discussion of theism approaches metaphysical realities (i.e. why do the laws of nature work and keep working consistently) how does your reason for making atheism the default position remain useful?
@StormTrek Because the default position is always not accepting every claim you come across. You wouldnt believe me if I told you I have a dragon in my garage. For you it is fair to not believe me until I show some evidence. In the same way its fair to be an atheist until shown otherwise.
@latuman The Christian concept of God as a Creator has dominated western civ for the past 1,600 years or so. According to that claim, everything that exists is evidence of God. Therefore, the Christian God must be the default position. Consequently, I'm wondering where the evidence is for alternate claims.
@latuman That sounds like an attempt to redefine atheism as ignorance of an idea. Doesn't that create a problem for the person who has been introduced to the idea of god yet still refers to himself as an atheist? After all, he is no longer ignorant of the idea.
@StormTrek Ignorance of gods makes you an atheist. The word atheist simply means "not a theist". It means that for whatever reason, the individual has no god belief of any kind. It is applicable to babies as well as grown men and women who do not have a god belief for some other reason, like reason and logic.
One cannot choose to be an atheist (maybe not even a theist for that matter). You cannot choose, I argue, to suddenly believe in gods, like you cant start to believe in unicorns.
@latuman If someone who has a belief in God gets into a car accident and slips into a coma, does that person become an atheist during the period of time they are in the coma?
@StormTrek Are you a theist when you are asleep? I'd say yes, you still are. Sleep or coma, I'd say that doesnt really matter when defining a part of someones personality.
@latuman I'm not sure atheism can be identified as a personality trait. I'd also suggest that the definition of atheism is contingent on the definition of theism. Theism requires comprehension of god as a concept and a conscious affirmation of the existence of god/s. Thus, a coma patient is neither a theist nor an atheist because they are not conscious. They may have a history affirming either position, but they are neither as long as they are unconscious.
@StormTrek I also dont think atheist is a trait at all, just like "Not collecting stamps" is also not a trait. It would need to be something positive I think. Now, being a skeptic is something that is a part of personality.
Your definitions assume that atheism is a negative claim, which it is not. Its only an absence of belief and requires no effort. It takes absolutely no faith or claims from me to think that a flying teapot is not orbiting our planet. It really does not even come to my mind
@latuman As i pointed out earlier, the Christian concept of a Creator God has dominated western civ for 1,600 years. Consequently, the question of god is about the uncaused Cause and whether or not it has a mind. Consequently, a rejection of position A becomes a claim for position B.
@StormTrek "dominated western civ for 1,600 years" I fail to see the relevance to individuals. "the question of god is about the uncaused Cause and whether or not it has a mind" - One argument at a time. Establish the existence first.
Atheism is first and foremost an absence of belief. Whatever imaginary creature you come up with, I could say I "reject" it as you put it yourself, but my stance would still be the same: I do not believe in it and it requires no action of faith or belief from me
@latuman The fact that Christianity has dominated western civ makes it inexcusable for atheist philosophers to borrow scientific methodology to analyze a topic that is undeniably metaphysical. Further, the uncaused Cause is established through reasoning an ultimate source of existence to avoid the problem of infinite regression (see Aristotle's unmoved mover). Claiming that the uncaused Cause has a mind creates a necessary dichotomy, thus, denying A necessarily claims B.
@StormTrek "to borrow scientific methodology to analyze a topic that is undeniably metaphysical"
If it cannot be studiet with science, it is then indistinquishable from something that does not exist.
"an ultimate source of existence to avoid the problem of infinite regression"
A claim concerning the origin of the universe is a scientific claim necessarily. What evidence can you show that something does not need a cause? Or are you just A) Making up excuses B) Parroting Bill Craig.
@latuman Because you mentioned Craig, I just put a video of Craig in my favorites. Watch it starting at 1:15 in regard to your belief that science is the basis for determining what does and what does not exist. Watch closely when he mentions mathematics.
Also, i didn't make a claim concerning origin, the claim concerned the uncaused Cause (the thing that keeps the laws of nature working consistently). Finally, origin can be studied by science because the laws of nature remain consistent.
@StormTrek I normally dont bother with Craig, but I did now. There is nothing new in what he says. He insists on using the word "scientifically proven" when science could not prove a damn thing. Like "other minds". They are just exceedingly probable. Then he goes on to say "science cannot comment on nazism", which no-one would argue it should.
So the original question is flawed. Science does not account for EVERYTHING and no-one claims it does. It just deals with examining natures facts.
@StormTrek To your next paragraph. Laws of nature do not seem to need any maintenance, they work all on their own just fine. Nowhere is there seen anything that would keep them "up" and I still cannot distinguish your "uncaused cause" with the origin of the universe. I've never heard it mean any other by the godly.
In short, what evidence do you have that nature cannot work on its own, I guess is the question.
@latuman The point is that science useful only when applied in the proper context. Craig did a good job making that point because this particular video made by Don Exodus made the mistake of talking about a null hypothesis (a 'default') and applied it to a metaphysical topic.
Additionally, asking for evidence to show nature cannot work on its own demonstrates that you haven't properly identified context. You should be telling me what methodology you use to approach metaphysical questions.
@StormTrek As stated earlier. If it cannot be studied (metaphysical or whatever), it has exactly the same properties as something that does not exist.
You insist that nature is contengent on the metaphysical, but if it cannot be studied--- See above. You can assert any pink unicorn or pixie you wish, but dont expect others to believe you.
@latuman I didn't say it can't be studied. I said science isn't a useful methodology in this case because it is misapplied. I am challenging your application of scientific methodology in regard to the question of God just as I would challenge your application of scientific methodology to the question of mathematics. Mathematics can, obviously, be studied. Explain why a methodology useful for answering the *how* of the laws of nature is useful for answering the *why* of the laws of nature.
@StormTrek If it can be studied, it is a scientific question. Either or. Name any, and I mean any other method of acquiring knowledge which can be independently verified.
Math can be considered as sience. Math is more like a tool for science to use. It also works very well in unfolding patterns and is repeatable. It is not as you think "either math or science" question, because they are not mutually exclusive. More like complimentary to eachother.
@latuman Mathematicians use chalkboards, not test tubes. As Craig said in the video, "science presupposes mathematics". Mathematics is more properly classified as logic rather than science. Asking why someone went to a store is just as valid as asking how they got there. Consequently, unless you can explain to me how scientific methodology is capable of answering why the laws of nature behave the way they do I must question the basis of your demand for evidence. Again, what is evidence for God?
@StormTrek "science presupposes mathematics" - So what? If mathematics would suddenly disappear, while it would hinder science tremendously, it would not stop it.
What causes the laws of nature to behave as they do is a question. Using the word "Why" sounds teliological, and so makes the question just stupid. There is no inherent reason from "will" in the laws of nature any more than there is when someone gets cancer or finds a quarter on the ground.
@latuman I did. They said everything is evidence for God. And that's a perfect response to demonstrate the absurdity of Don Exodus' misapplication of methodology in this video.
@StormTrek "Everything is evidence for God". Yup, that pretty much sums it up. Everything is evidence for the flying spaghetti monster and space lobster.
You can accept anything if you already believe it to be so.
@latuman What does a flying spaghetti monster have to do with demonstrating a scientific methodology is useful for approximating an answer to the question of a Creator God?
@latuman How do you support choosing science as the best methodology to address the issue? Especially considering our highly successful accumulation of mathematical knowledge is gathered through a methodology of logical proofs rather than science.
@StormTrek If you claim anything exists, you use science to study it. If not, it does not exist. Mathematical formulas are just that, formulas that are conjecture, proven to be useful.

Axiodox 1 month ago
You see, all it takes to see that any religion is absurd, is intelligence and the ability to read. And if you read from all perspectives and views e.g.. the Bible, Koran, Creationism, Science, evolution and so on.You can only come to one conclusion.............Religion and the belief in gods is crazy.

If somebody dug up the casket that Elvis was buried in, then opened it, they would have some excellent evidence of whether or not Elvis is dead or alive. Have evolutionists dug up any Hominid skeletons? Heck, they wouldn't even need a court order for that.
ironman197268 1 month ago
Christianity is founded on a historic fact, Christ's resurrection from the dead. That is the answer to both the question of "Why do we believe in Christ?" and "What evidence could disprove God?"
If Christ did not rise from the dead, then our faith is in vain. The Resurrection is the foundation of Christianity. It is the proof and the sign God gave you that He exists. If you could disprove it, you could disprove Christianity.
42base13 1 month ago
@42base13 There is NO evidence for the resurrection of Jesus Christ other than a Stone Age book. You can claim that people witnessed it, but anecdotal evidence is insufficient. People claim that Elvis is not really dead, and we don't take them seriously, right?
Showing that Jesus's tomb is NOT evidence that he resurrected. In fact, the simpler explanation for why his tomb would be empty are: Jesus never existed; Jesus's body was moved; Jesus didn't die there; etc.
DeadFishFactory 1 month ago
@DeadFishFactory Ultimately, multiple eyewitness testimony is all we have. You've never actually been on the moon, you've never seen anyone there. (pictures can be faked) Yet you believe, quite reasonably, that because large numbers of people testify that men went there that, they did, in fact, go there.
Large numbers of people at CERN testify in writing that some event occurred, and you believe them tho you never saw it yourself.
It's not much different.
42base13 1 month ago
@42base13 We can verify their claims. You really want to know if we landed on the moon? Shine lasers off the mirrors that the astronauts put there.
You want to verify the claims of the CERN scientists? Become a particle physicist and join them and see that their data is accurate.
How do you verify the claims that Jesus resurrected? You can't. There is NO known instance of ANYONE ANYWHERE coming back from the dead (and becoming God, rendering the sacrifice moot), so how do you verify?
DeadFishFactory 1 month ago
@DeadFishFactory If you haven't done those things, you are only relying on eyewitness testimony. You can reject eyewitness testimony if you chose, but don't claim that it doesn't exist.
42base13 1 month ago
@42base13 Here's the thing: I trust scientists and science. I theoretically COULD do the experiments myself to verify--that is what science is all about. If you do not trust a scientist's claim, or you think they are in error, then look through their findings and replicate their research.
I am perfectly fine with taking a scientist at their word. I DO NOT extend the same trust to religious individuals. There are no other instances of resurrection ever taking place.
DeadFishFactory 1 month ago
@42base13 I never said that eye witness testimonies didn't exist. I said that they aren't always the most accurate. Just because there are eye witness testimonies of Jesus coming back from the dead means that he did any more than eye witness testimonies about seeing Elvis alive today means that he is alive today.
DeadFishFactory 1 month ago
@DeadFishFactory I've never heard of 100 people reporting they saw Elvis at the same time.
But that would apply to all of history. You can't independently do an experiment to prove that Christopher Columbus ever lived, but you take the word of historians because multiple witnesses testified that he existed.
42base13 1 month ago
@42base13 God damn, you're stupid. We have multiple accounts of Christopher Columbus--all of which DO NOT COME FROM ONE BOOK. We don't have ONE book that claims multiple accounts. We ACTUALLY HAVE independent multiple accounts of Christopher Columbus's existence.
The eye witness accounts of Jesus ALL come from the Bible, and no where else. We do not have independent sources of the contemporary account of Jesus Christ, let alone his resurrection.
DeadFishFactory 1 month ago
@42base13 And that's the other thing; not only do we need independent sources, but the sources must not contradict what we know about the universe. Historians can accept the account that Christopher Columbus wanted to find a route to India, but mistaken the distance and ended up on what we know as America. What historians won't accept as true is the account that Christopher Columbus sailed his ship to outer space and battled aliens, but was hit and crash-landed in America.
DeadFishFactory 1 month ago
@42base13 You can't rely solely on testimonies because people lie or misunderstood what they saw. If you claim that it is FAITH, then don't claim that the resurrection of Christ is a historical fact.

and THEN of course theres numerous rifts amoungst atheists, some believe in the para-normal however by definition that cannot apply- some believe that they have to spread the message of non-belief etc. We are human we do these things.
tribalstyle138 1 month ago
Atheists BELIEVE in the non-existence. That is a belief.... so therefore it can not be the default state. A = anti Theism= well you see where I am going. Im not disagreeing with any of you- I am simply stating from an etymological standpoint, we are born agnostic. A= anti Gnostic= knowledge. Know what happens in our first few years of life- thats different. Children believe in all sorts of things that don't exist.
tribalstyle138 1 month ago
i think you all are missing the simplicity of what i am saying. It means without knowledge We are born in that default state.
tribalstyle138 1 month ago
continued... we are born without knowledge. We learn and discover, just like we discovered the different aspects of science, and we continue to learn things not yet discovered. We are by default without knowledge, therefore agnostic.
tribalstyle138 1 month ago
Hey I really like your video and everything you say except I believe the default position is agnostic. Agnostic means- without knowledge. Atheist- by definition as I understand have proof and/or knowledge on the non-existence of a power outside of science (whether that be god or ghosts etc.... real atheists do not believe in anything supernatural). Setting evidence of unexplained phenomena aside- we are born without knowledge.
tribalstyle138 1 month ago
@tribalstyle138 You're confusing two different things when you compare atheism and agnosticism like you do. Theism and atheism deals with belief, and you can ask whether belief is justified. Whether your beliefs amount to knowledge or not is irrelevant to that question. Agnosticism is not a third alternative there. You can see this rather easily when you realize that "Do you believe the statement 'God exists' is true?" is a yes/no question about your mental state.
Gnomefro 1 month ago
@Gnomefro true- but i HAVE knowledge now. When i was born i did not, ie without knowledge, ie agnostic.
tribalstyle138 1 month ago
@tribalstyle138 If you are a blank slate like you propose, then you will answer no to the question. That's what an atheist is. Someone who doesn't believe in gods. Not being able to establish that god exists to a level of knowledge can be a justification for atheism. Nothing more. The demand you put on atheism is just silly as well. We wouldn't even need a word for such a point of view as nobody could hold it reasonably.
Gnomefro 1 month ago
@Gnomefro look up the etymology of the word
tribalstyle138 1 month ago
"I don't believe in pink unicorns, but if you showed me one I would believe." That is agnosticism towards pink unicorns. An Apinkunicornist would still say there are no pink unicorns after you showed them one.

So you can be Agnostic Atheist, which overwhelming majority of atheists are... and same goes for christians.

I am 20 years old, and until now, I have been able to say I'm an atheist. Agnostic sounded a bit "better" because people shun atheists, or someone who doesn't really believe in anything theological. But I am quite happy to be this way.
i8splendidpizzapi 1 month ago
Wow, I felt the same way in high school. I used to be Christian, go to church, etc. But couldn't bring myself to believing anything because I, myself have my own experiences.
Eventually, I stopped going to church, praying, and realized that I had been making a conscious/ignorant choice to follow Christianity, which is solely based on faith, not true evidence.
As I was a "non-believer", my family started to notice, and my mom became really ashamed. That was when I was 16.
i8splendidpizzapi 1 month ago
you sir, are my hero, and you're right there's no way you could change the view of a diehard religious person.

Any “evidence” I can offer about Tao is how I live, not what I say. Taoism holds that a “believer: has no advantage over others in experiencing and expressing Tao.

Eragon1880 2 months ago

Based on your experiance and the reliability of these in the past, same is true with faith it comes with evidance and shows to be true.

But see those that are born defective mentally & all that, they stay INNOCENT,,wich gives them a free pass to heaven,(& God creates them for a reason),& we dnt,,ppl now a days are so corrupt & hav perve mentallity that we have to earn heaven, but salvation is individually, its up to us to belive in God or not.

if god/Yahweh created everything perfect than Satan would not have been evil, and thus evil would not exist, so obviously his creating abilities are flawed, or he just likes to punish things for fun, either way....

Is not. Reality.

Who fucking knows, just as someone can not convince you of Gods exitence you can't tell me he doesn't.
osodelicious25 6 months ago
@osodelicious25 "There is a plan and I can't even begin to tell you the details..." Zeus exists and I can't even begin to describe him to you. Your reason for disbelieving me is exactly the same same as mine for disbelieving you. You are an atheist as far as other myths go. Your emotional attachment to one, in particular, does not make it true
richwfd2002 6 months ago
There's no evidence that God doesn't exist. The only "evidence" that's ever been brought forth for his existence is experience. Human witness. And that's up for each individual person to decide whether or not they believe. There's plenty of accounts of people experiencing God. Atheists just choose believe, purely on faith, that none of them are real and that the people experiencing them must be delusional. We accept witness testimony in court. Why are you so eager to doubt testimonies about God?
18TimTom 6 months ago

18TimTom 6 months ago

WELL THAT DOESNT BENEFIT ANYONE! how am i supposed to declare war against muslim nations if religion does not exist? why would i make the crusades and slaughter milions if ppl have nothing to divide them. how im i supposed to profit if everyone thinks! thats the real point of religion sheepism
kakiasmeno 7 months ago
Religion is simply a waste of time and mind poisoning. They believe in something that they have completely no evidence at all. If god exists, then why can't he show himself in my room to show me that he exists while I'm typing this? And they say, you just have to have faith. Is he a loving caring god? Or is he a jackass that doesn't care? HEY GOD! YOU SUCK! DO SOMETHING TO PROVE ME WRONG! Sorry, I got nothing. No warnings, no answer, no nothing.

18TimTom 7 months ago
There's evidence enough for God by the fact that I'm alive. By knowing the two years ago I was lying in bed hopeless because my life amounted to nothing more than a spec of matter in an humongous universe. Because at that moment I wanted to to die and end my meaningless life. It was at that moment I FELT a very real God. Clearly you've never felt God. My faith isn't blind. You've replaced God with yourself. You can't save you from death though. Believe what you want, but at least I have hope.

I believe it has more to do with unwillingness to change, either because somebody has found something that satisfies them, or because a belief system was drilled into their originally-flexible minds as children. Much like a person molested or physically abused as a child, habits driven by the abuse don't go away easily in a person's adult life.
WxsOnline 8 months ago
As to your last point: It's perfectly understandable why theists are impermeable in their beliefs, whereas atheists are not. It's simply impossible to prove something doesn't exist. Therefore, if one has taken the leap of faith to believe it does, then there shouldn't be anything to convince them that it doesn't.
Dudeguy785 8 months ago
Hitchens did this!!!!!!! Hitchens is great man. Everyone, quickly, run to youtube (wait you are already there) and look up Christopher Hitchens!

FgtMaggot 9 months ago
@StormTrek mathematics is not the study of nature and is not used to find out which things exist and which dont. if you claim a god exists, you study it with science. maths dont affect nature and does not study nature. science does. you try to push god to the field other than science because you think you can justifbelief that way. sorry, it does not work that way. the only way to not use science is if you say that god does not manifest in nature at all
latuman 9 months ago
I am no longer a christian because I found out Nazareth didn't exist in the first 2/3 of the First Century CE, not even as a city of the dead.
Like you said, extraordinary claims required extraordinary things.
EdM021 9 months ago
You said you were 'never really religious' it seems like you were a 'Christian' as more of a title rather than actually seeking God. Why didn't you actually practice it rather than just looking at it objectively? I know God might not make sense, but unless you give Him a go, how will you truly ever really know??? There simply isn't enough proof either side of the argument both require an element of faith. Your evidence will be there if you seriously try, can you honestly say you gave God a shot?
SimonMann3rs 9 months ago
Why does atheism get to be the default position? That doesn't sound fair.
StormTrek 9 months ago
@StormTrek Logic and epistemology isn't a democracy, and fairness is not an issue here. It's ultimately an issue of which approach causing the least harm to your system of beliefs. Accepting every existence claim without evidence will lead you to believe all kinds of contradictory nonsense. Rejecting them will only have the effect of delaying your acceptance of true claims until evidence is available.
It's really agnostic atheism that ends up being the default though.
Gnomefro 9 months ago
@StormTrek In the end, it's the same logic that makes us require evidence before believing in fairies. Not fair to the fairies, but very useful for relating to reality.
Gnomefro 9 months ago
@Gnomefro You're right, fairness isn't an issue here. Usefulness is though, as you have indicated. When the discussion of theism approaches metaphysical realities (i.e. why do the laws of nature work and keep working consistently) how does your reason for making atheism the default position remain useful?
StormTrek 9 months ago
@StormTrek Because the default position is always not accepting every claim you come across. You wouldnt believe me if I told you I have a dragon in my garage. For you it is fair to not believe me until I show some evidence. In the same way its fair to be an atheist until shown otherwise.
latuman 9 months ago
@latuman What does evidence for God look like?
StormTrek 9 months ago
@StormTrek I wouldnt know. You'd have to ask those who claim a god or gods exist. For some reason they havent come up with any, and thats weird.
latuman 9 months ago
@latuman The Christian concept of God as a Creator has dominated western civ for the past 1,600 years or so. According to that claim, everything that exists is evidence of God. Therefore, the Christian God must be the default position. Consequently, I'm wondering where the evidence is for alternate claims.
StormTrek 9 months ago
@StormTrek A child does not know about gods until the idea is taught to him/her.
Thats why its the default.
latuman 9 months ago
@latuman That sounds like an attempt to redefine atheism as ignorance of an idea. Doesn't that create a problem for the person who has been introduced to the idea of god yet still refers to himself as an atheist? After all, he is no longer ignorant of the idea.
StormTrek 9 months ago
@StormTrek Ignorance of gods makes you an atheist. The word atheist simply means "not a theist". It means that for whatever reason, the individual has no god belief of any kind. It is applicable to babies as well as grown men and women who do not have a god belief for some other reason, like reason and logic.
One cannot choose to be an atheist (maybe not even a theist for that matter). You cannot choose, I argue, to suddenly believe in gods, like you cant start to believe in unicorns.
latuman 9 months ago
@latuman If someone who has a belief in God gets into a car accident and slips into a coma, does that person become an atheist during the period of time they are in the coma?
StormTrek 9 months ago
@StormTrek Are you a theist when you are asleep? I'd say yes, you still are. Sleep or coma, I'd say that doesnt really matter when defining a part of someones personality.
latuman 9 months ago
@latuman I'm not sure atheism can be identified as a personality trait. I'd also suggest that the definition of atheism is contingent on the definition of theism. Theism requires comprehension of god as a concept and a conscious affirmation of the existence of god/s. Thus, a coma patient is neither a theist nor an atheist because they are not conscious. They may have a history affirming either position, but they are neither as long as they are unconscious.
StormTrek 9 months ago
@StormTrek I also dont think atheist is a trait at all, just like "Not collecting stamps" is also not a trait. It would need to be something positive I think. Now, being a skeptic is something that is a part of personality.
Your definitions assume that atheism is a negative claim, which it is not. Its only an absence of belief and requires no effort. It takes absolutely no faith or claims from me to think that a flying teapot is not orbiting our planet. It really does not even come to my mind
latuman 9 months ago
@latuman As i pointed out earlier, the Christian concept of a Creator God has dominated western civ for 1,600 years. Consequently, the question of god is about the uncaused Cause and whether or not it has a mind. Consequently, a rejection of position A becomes a claim for position B.
StormTrek 9 months ago
@StormTrek "dominated western civ for 1,600 years" I fail to see the relevance to individuals. "the question of god is about the uncaused Cause and whether or not it has a mind" - One argument at a time. Establish the existence first.
Atheism is first and foremost an absence of belief. Whatever imaginary creature you come up with, I could say I "reject" it as you put it yourself, but my stance would still be the same: I do not believe in it and it requires no action of faith or belief from me
latuman 9 months ago
@latuman The fact that Christianity has dominated western civ makes it inexcusable for atheist philosophers to borrow scientific methodology to analyze a topic that is undeniably metaphysical. Further, the uncaused Cause is established through reasoning an ultimate source of existence to avoid the problem of infinite regression (see Aristotle's unmoved mover). Claiming that the uncaused Cause has a mind creates a necessary dichotomy, thus, denying A necessarily claims B.
StormTrek 9 months ago
@StormTrek "to borrow scientific methodology to analyze a topic that is undeniably metaphysical"
If it cannot be studiet with science, it is then indistinquishable from something that does not exist.
"an ultimate source of existence to avoid the problem of infinite regression"
A claim concerning the origin of the universe is a scientific claim necessarily. What evidence can you show that something does not need a cause? Or are you just A) Making up excuses B) Parroting Bill Craig.
latuman 9 months ago
@latuman Because you mentioned Craig, I just put a video of Craig in my favorites. Watch it starting at 1:15 in regard to your belief that science is the basis for determining what does and what does not exist. Watch closely when he mentions mathematics.
Also, i didn't make a claim concerning origin, the claim concerned the uncaused Cause (the thing that keeps the laws of nature working consistently). Finally, origin can be studied by science because the laws of nature remain consistent.
StormTrek 9 months ago
@StormTrek I normally dont bother with Craig, but I did now. There is nothing new in what he says. He insists on using the word "scientifically proven" when science could not prove a damn thing. Like "other minds". They are just exceedingly probable. Then he goes on to say "science cannot comment on nazism", which no-one would argue it should.
So the original question is flawed. Science does not account for EVERYTHING and no-one claims it does. It just deals with examining natures facts.
latuman 9 months ago
@StormTrek To your next paragraph. Laws of nature do not seem to need any maintenance, they work all on their own just fine. Nowhere is there seen anything that would keep them "up" and I still cannot distinguish your "uncaused cause" with the origin of the universe. I've never heard it mean any other by the godly.
In short, what evidence do you have that nature cannot work on its own, I guess is the question.
latuman 9 months ago
@latuman The point is that science useful only when applied in the proper context. Craig did a good job making that point because this particular video made by Don Exodus made the mistake of talking about a null hypothesis (a 'default') and applied it to a metaphysical topic.
Additionally, asking for evidence to show nature cannot work on its own demonstrates that you haven't properly identified context. You should be telling me what methodology you use to approach metaphysical questions.
StormTrek 9 months ago
@StormTrek As stated earlier. If it cannot be studied (metaphysical or whatever), it has exactly the same properties as something that does not exist.
You insist that nature is contengent on the metaphysical, but if it cannot be studied--- See above. You can assert any pink unicorn or pixie you wish, but dont expect others to believe you.
latuman 9 months ago
@latuman I didn't say it can't be studied. I said science isn't a useful methodology in this case because it is misapplied. I am challenging your application of scientific methodology in regard to the question of God just as I would challenge your application of scientific methodology to the question of mathematics. Mathematics can, obviously, be studied. Explain why a methodology useful for answering the *how* of the laws of nature is useful for answering the *why* of the laws of nature.
StormTrek 9 months ago
@StormTrek If it can be studied, it is a scientific question. Either or. Name any, and I mean any other method of acquiring knowledge which can be independently verified.
Math can be considered as sience. Math is more like a tool for science to use. It also works very well in unfolding patterns and is repeatable. It is not as you think "either math or science" question, because they are not mutually exclusive. More like complimentary to eachother.
Why questions are not necessarily sensical
latuman 9 months ago
@latuman Mathematicians use chalkboards, not test tubes. As Craig said in the video, "science presupposes mathematics". Mathematics is more properly classified as logic rather than science. Asking why someone went to a store is just as valid as asking how they got there. Consequently, unless you can explain to me how scientific methodology is capable of answering why the laws of nature behave the way they do I must question the basis of your demand for evidence. Again, what is evidence for God?
StormTrek 9 months ago
@StormTrek "science presupposes mathematics" - So what? If mathematics would suddenly disappear, while it would hinder science tremendously, it would not stop it.
What causes the laws of nature to behave as they do is a question. Using the word "Why" sounds teliological, and so makes the question just stupid. There is no inherent reason from "will" in the laws of nature any more than there is when someone gets cancer or finds a quarter on the ground.
No-one cares about "why" questions.
latuman 9 months ago
@StormTrek "What is evidence for god?" -- Ask the godly.
latuman 9 months ago
@latuman I did. They said everything is evidence for God. And that's a perfect response to demonstrate the absurdity of Don Exodus' misapplication of methodology in this video.
StormTrek 9 months ago
@StormTrek "Everything is evidence for God". Yup, that pretty much sums it up. Everything is evidence for the flying spaghetti monster and space lobster.
You can accept anything if you already believe it to be so.
latuman 9 months ago
@latuman What does a flying spaghetti monster have to do with demonstrating a scientific methodology is useful for approximating an answer to the question of a Creator God?
StormTrek 9 months ago
@StormTrek I tried to show you how they seem to be equal concepts.
latuman 9 months ago
@latuman Since when has a claim equated with a methodology?
StormTrek 9 months ago
@StormTrek i.e. your claim is unsupported with evidence.
latuman 9 months ago
@latuman What is the name of the methodology you used to determine the claim is unsupported?
StormTrek 9 months ago
@StormTrek Science?
latuman 9 months ago
@latuman How do you support choosing science as the best methodology to address the issue? Especially considering our highly successful accumulation of mathematical knowledge is gathered through a methodology of logical proofs rather than science.
StormTrek 9 months ago
@StormTrek If you claim anything exists, you use science to study it. If not, it does not exist. Mathematical formulas are just that, formulas that are conjecture, proven to be useful.
latuman 9 months ago
@latuman You didn't support your choice of science as the proper methodology to analyze the question. Worse yet, yo
