Knowing the capabilities of this machine, this is extremely well done. So the pictures are just a shitload of custom defined characters/tiles? holy crap.
@OBSysteme I totally agree with that statement ... should be used for education, back to basic programming rather than mouse clicking ... in fact need to decide myself close to 40, always wanted to learn to program, have a small 80s retro collection vic20, 64, amstrad, bbc b, acorn electron, dragon 32 ... which one to learn on ?!
About the pictures: understanding how bitmaps can only be shown by putting them in the font, how did you (for the pictures segment) get more than two colors in the same 8x8 area?
I was 12 when I bought mine, they just came out. it was almost $300 dollars and I delivered about a million papers to be able to afford it. I was king of 5k computing! it is important for folks to know how they work and understand the technology. In the near future we may be back to this technology. the old machines can do alot if you know how to use them. great video and awsome demo, best I have seen!
I've watched the Babylon 5 part 8 times in a row the last couple of days, it almost makes me cry, its so awesome.. Most deep and emotional sci fi serie out there.. especially surprising since its russian made..
But I can't understand one thing - how video output works if said that VIC-20 don't have sprites or even bitmap modes? Is the video signal generated on the fly consuming CPU time, like in Sinclair ZX80? Explain that to me somebody pleeeeease :-)
No, it uses redefinable character graphic modes, I cite from Wikipedia:
"The VIC-20 lacks any true graphic mode, but a 22×11 text mode with 200 definable characters of 8×16 bits each arranged as a matrix of 20×10 characters is usually used instead, giving a 2:1 aspect ratio, 160×160 pixels, 8-color "high-res mode" or a 4:1 aspect ratio, 80×160 pixels, 10-color "multicolor mode"."
I am not surprised Marko Mäkelä had his fingers in this demo - very few people exist who know as much about the VIC-20 (and the C64) as Marko. I have the deepest respect for this guy's knowledge.

Are you sure this is vic20 and not C64

This whole demo was programmed in Assembler, you couldn't to all this in BASIC.

Oh... thanks for the explanation, somehow not guessed to see in Wikipedia, really...
So It's like only text mode, with ability to modify fonts on the fly I guess?
ZXRulezzz 2 years ago
Yeah, it is similiar to text mode, but with custom characters.

By the way, very impressed with this demo. Our very first computer was a vic-20. I find it incredible the work people do on this machine these days.
