You're doing nothing but ruining the breed. German Shepherds may not have started out as the over-angulated American showlines or the roach-backed German showlines, but they definitely didn't start out the size of a Great Pyrenees either.
@ImFlareonBitch True true, there is a standard for a reason, these dogs are meant to be 66-88 lbs, they are not built like Mastiffs to support the weight, and they ARE supposed to have a SLIGHT slope, just not as exaggerated and unhealthy as showlines. These are herding dogs, herding dogs have to be agile, asking one of these dogs to PHYSICALLY be able to herd a dog is like asking a Saint Bernard to do agility, it just doesn't work. A GSD should be PHYSICALLY able to work no matter the breeding.
@JaneAndDracoAndTheo I have never seen an American show line over 90 pounds. The majority are in the 70-80 range. German show lines, on the other hand, have some pretty huge dogs. I have also seen quite a few American German Shepherds who are competitive in specialties and end up being group winners who are herding titled and I know there is one SchH3 Am Ch. who is a cross between American and West German showlines (though I have to find his name.) They can work, we just don't work them.
@JaneAndDracoAndTheo Also, there are many American show line GSDs working as search and rescue, cadaver, and detector dogs. Maybe they don't run as fast and maybe they aren't as drivey, but they most certainly can do a job other than trotting around the ring if they are trained to do a job. Many people like to make assumptions based on videos like these - go actually meet, see and feel some show line German Shepherds. They are sturdy, most have stable temperaments, and they are not disabled.

Don't buy an oversized German Shepherd. Buy a dog from a breeder that breeds within the standards the dogs are intended to be. Remember, bigger dogs eat more, shit more, and die earlier.

If a Shilo Shepherd is the result of breeding large GSDs together (which still makes them GSDs in my eyes and not a seperate breed) then how are they any different from your wonderful dogs? And what is the life expectancy of your dogs? A standard GSD is about 13 yrs.
Now, THAT's the real German Shepherd!! Congratulations! Here in Hungary we call them "Kántor type" after a famous police dog in the 1950s, or "East German shepherds". I used to have a beautiful couple of this kind, the male over 145 pounds, the female 120. For all the trolls: these are not crossbreeds, they are pure GSs, but this kind is quite rare nowadays. They were more common in East Europe during the mid-1990s, and still in Russia.
One other thing. Google pictures of Horand V Grafrath (THE Grandfather Of ALL Shepherds). "Horand von Grafrath (formerly Hektor Linksrhein) was the first German Shepherd Dog and the genetic basis for modern German Shepherds. Owned by none other than Max Von Stephanitz."

i have to add the breed has been improved so much ...u gotta do your research if u really have to say something about the new dogs ( west german showlines and west german working lines ). The dip in the back indicates a weak back ...the topline should be flowing and slope slightly ...but thats just my opinion . he dogs that reach the top in germany have extremely high prey drives, excellent temperaments and its all in the training to get your dog titled ...again look it up people !!
i think you should do your research more and understand that german showlines are top notch and that the breeders of the top dogs in germany are stiving for perfection ..i do agree some dogs have roach backs but not all of them ...look up the standard and watch some seiger show videos ...i think your opinion will change coz those are some of the best working dogs ,,,and thats why they are titled and have to prove they are capable of producing those traits in their off spring ( progeny)

Beautiful dogs. My GSD was on the larger end (32 inches, 140 pounds) and looking at his frame, he looked skinney! Very mild temperment, great with kids, low to medium drive, but don't let that fool you...he would protect my wife and kids if he felt it necessary, but I could have strangers come in the house and he would greet them with tail wagging and act like they were long lost friends. Wonderful dog, his only flaw was that he had a dog's lifespan.

I like big GSD with big bones like yours and I like the straight back, I honestly like more the traditional short or medium coat than the long coat,,, I like the pigmentation, structure and head of the dog in 2:18 , some others you show have too much yellow in the face, and some other with uneven ears like puppies, but anyway they are beautiful.
Those are beautiful dogs and I love their backs , perfectly straight like a true GSD. When I was in Europe I saw XL breed of GSD and their weight reaches up 160lb and they are trained to kill wolves in the mountains. They were collars full of metal spikes when they fight wolves and let me tell u something just because GSD is big it sure does not mean the dog is slow.

Great video! I have a 2 year old male 90 lbs(American style/shorthaired). He is very tall and reminds me of a moose or a deer sometimes..lol I want to get him a long haired female like one of yours. My dog sheds really bad if I don't get him low-sheds at the groomer. Do these dogs shed really bad? I'm sure they do but I was wondering if maybe the longer the hair the less likely it will fall out...?
Big may not be beautiful in some eyes, but it is far from abnormal. This breed of dog was bred in the wrong direction for shows, the dogs I see in this video are how they should be, no hip slop, thick legs and wide face. A great video showing the true appearence of the breed. Thanks for sharing. x

My female GSD is about 75 lbs. What does the extra 25-50 lbs do for these bigger dogs, except to make them bigger, slower and less agile overall. I always wonder about a guy who feels like he needs the biggest of, well, anything. They were NEVER designed/bred to be huge, except by people with some ridiculous notion that bigger = better.. They are herding/working dogs. My GSD would run absolute circles around these dogs, and do it all day. Plus, she will probably live longer.

these are not 'old style gsd's Old style gsd's were built light and smallish 65-80 lbs. they could handle working all day in extreme conditions, when eric designed this dog this is not what he had in mind for his breed. I breed working dogs and they are fantastic family dogs as well with all the drive and punch and still calm and quiet in the house. This dumbing down of the breed kinda makes me angry.
the breeds first roots were large and probably long haired..I have a one in a million dog...his father or mother was long haired nor was any of his sister or brother or grand parents...the grandparents breeders told me I was nuts ..they didn't breed long hairs.. I can show you their offspring if you want he is big 125 pounds, hairy and would knock or drag a 225 pound man down to the ground
I have to agree with most of the other comments here. You should never try to breed out working drive from a GSD. The breed was created to have this drive and if you can't handle it, choose another dog! Even with a high prey and ball drive they make excellent pets with the right socialization, just like most other breeds. It's a shame that people only want to breed for a coat type (the long coat cannot be breed surveyed in Germany at all!!) and size. You are not doing the breed justice
It seems that due to their much larger size theyd be more prone to HD and other health problems. These dogs shouldnt be breed to have no working drive but to have a more upstanding working drive. Thats their purpose to be loyal and good working dogs. I wouldnt recomand buying any pups from them because they dont seem to be really breeding GSD but a shepherd that they claim to be a GSD.
This just goes to show that some people will breed anything and some people will buy anything. I bet these breeders (backyard no doubt) also feed Purina dog food.

I was just wondering how their added size and weight does on their hips? I know overweight shepherds are more prone to HD than skinny ones, do these have a larger bone structure to compensate for all that weight or do you see HD in these like you do in some other larger breeds? (for example the Great Dane) My college neighbor had several, he told me none lived past 8 because of HD. Thanks
Our dogs have been hip certified before breeding, but they do tend have a larger frame and structure versus a typical GSD. They have thicker legs, broader skulls, and a much more sturdy appearance.
@LongcoatGSD Those are some big German Shepherds. But I hope your also breeding for health and not just shear size and weight. And do you breed for that low back?
Oh and it says you only breed for low to medium drive. So does that mean they wouldn't make good protection dogs?
By the way. Since your breeding for size you should also breed them to be agile for their size. Or else you could end up with very sluggish dogs. For example, some big dog breeds are fast for their size, and some are not.
@bluegama500 At the beginning of the video, it states we're striving for healthy family companions, size is an added bonus as health and temperament come first. We OFA hips, have been doing elbows, TLI testing, and our males test normal/clear NON-CARRIERS of degenerative myelopathy. If you're looking for a natural guardian, that is what our dogs our, but we do not breed dogs for personal protection. They are agile and fast, but not overly active and are calm in the house.

I was delivering mail one day and there was one of these fine beauties sitting on it's sundeck. As I went up the stairs to the mailbox, it stuck it's snout through a 6" glass partition and gave me it's paw. I could have stayed there all day lavishing it with attention but the mail had to get delivered. Plenty of dogs hate mail carriers but this big boy didn't. Didn't seem like a very good watchdog to me!

while i don't necessarily like how the american shepherd has been bred into a smaller leaner form, it's because it actually serves a purpose. the smaller and leaner the dog, the faster and more agile it can be. when you're working in a K9 unit this is the kind of dog you want, something that can run, jump, and take down a potential threat very quickly....they're almost like cheetahs in a sense...

These GSD's have been bread for family companions for many generations by the breeder. That is how they get a very calm temperament. I have a large breed and he is wonderful, has high drive but is a wonderful family dog. He is about 14 months old and 30 inches high at about 110lbs. I couldn't ask for a better dog.

Beautiful dogs. My GSD was on the larger end (32 inches, 140 pounds) and looking at his frame, he looked skinney! Very mild temperment, great with kids, low to medium drive, but don't let that fool you...he would protect my wife and kids if he felt it necessary, but I could have strangers come in the house and he would greet them with tail wagging and act like they were long lost friends. Wonderful dog, his only flaw was that he had a dog's lifespan.

I like big GSD with big bones like yours and I like the straight back, I honestly like more the traditional short or medium coat than the long coat,,, I like the pigmentation, structure and head of the dog in 2:18 , some others you show have too much yellow in the face, and some other with uneven ears like puppies, but anyway they are beautiful.

Those are beautiful dogs and I love their backs , perfectly straight like a true GSD. When I was in Europe I saw XL breed of GSD and their weight reaches up 160lb and they are trained to kill wolves in the mountains. They were collars full of metal spikes when they fight wolves and let me tell u something just because GSD is big it sure does not mean the dog is slow.

Great video! I have a 2 year old male 90 lbs(American style/shorthaired). He is very tall and reminds me of a moose or a deer sometimes..lol I want to get him a long haired female like one of yours. My dog sheds really bad if I don't get him low-sheds at the groomer. Do these dogs shed really bad? I'm sure they do but I was wondering if maybe the longer the hair the less likely it will fall out...?

Big may not be beautiful in some eyes, but it is far from abnormal. This breed of dog was bred in the wrong direction for shows, the dogs I see in this video are how they should be, no hip slop, thick legs and wide face. A great video showing the true appearence of the breed. Thanks for sharing. x

The dog in these videos are not germsn shepherds there lines may have been from gsd dogs but when you breed them this clumsy and slow they are useless for the type of work they were meant for, herding and protection.

My female GSD is about 75 lbs. What does the extra 25-50 lbs do for these bigger dogs, except to make them bigger, slower and less agile overall. I always wonder about a guy who feels like he needs the biggest of, well, anything. They were NEVER designed/bred to be huge, except by people with some ridiculous notion that bigger = better.. They are herding/working dogs. My GSD would run absolute circles around these dogs, and do it all day. Plus, she will probably live longer.

these are not 'old style gsd's Old style gsd's were built light and smallish 65-80 lbs. they could handle working all day in extreme conditions, when eric designed this dog this is not what he had in mind for his breed. I breed working dogs and they are fantastic family dogs as well with all the drive and punch and still calm and quiet in the house. This dumbing down of the breed kinda makes me angry.

the breeds first roots were large and probably long haired..I have a one in a million dog...his father or mother was long haired nor was any of his sister or brother or grand parents...the grandparents breeders told me I was nuts ..they didn't breed long hairs.. I can show you their offspring if you want he is big 125 pounds, hairy and would knock or drag a 225 pound man down to the ground

I have to agree with most of the other comments here. You should never try to breed out working drive from a GSD. The breed was created to have this drive and if you can't handle it, choose another dog! Even with a high prey and ball drive they make excellent pets with the right socialization, just like most other breeds. It's a shame that people only want to breed for a coat type (the long coat cannot be breed surveyed in Germany at all!!) and size. You are not doing the breed justice

It seems that due to their much larger size theyd be more prone to HD and other health problems. These dogs shouldnt be breed to have no working drive but to have a more upstanding working drive. Thats their purpose to be loyal and good working dogs. I wouldnt recomand buying any pups from them because they dont seem to be really breeding GSD but a shepherd that they claim to be a GSD.

I was just wondering how their added size and weight does on their hips? I know overweight shepherds are more prone to HD than skinny ones, do these have a larger bone structure to compensate for all that weight or do you see HD in these like you do in some other larger breeds? (for example the Great Dane) My college neighbor had several, he told me none lived past 8 because of HD. Thanks

Our dogs have been hip certified before breeding, but they do tend have a larger frame and structure versus a typical GSD. They have thicker legs, broader skulls, and a much more sturdy appearance.

Oh and it says you only breed for low to medium drive. So does that mean they wouldn't make good protection dogs?
By the way. Since your breeding for size you should also breed them to be agile for their size. Or else you could end up with very sluggish dogs. For example, some big dog breeds are fast for their size, and some are not.

@bluegama500 At the beginning of the video, it states we're striving for healthy family companions, size is an added bonus as health and temperament come first. We OFA hips, have been doing elbows, TLI testing, and our males test normal/clear NON-CARRIERS of degenerative myelopathy. If you're looking for a natural guardian, that is what our dogs our, but we do not breed dogs for personal protection. They are agile and fast, but not overly active and are calm in the house.

I was delivering mail one day and there was one of these fine beauties sitting on it's sundeck. As I went up the stairs to the mailbox, it stuck it's snout through a 6" glass partition and gave me it's paw. I could have stayed there all day lavishing it with attention but the mail had to get delivered. Plenty of dogs hate mail carriers but this big boy didn't. Didn't seem like a very good watchdog to me!

while i don't necessarily like how the american shepherd has been bred into a smaller leaner form, it's because it actually serves a purpose. the smaller and leaner the dog, the faster and more agile it can be. when you're working in a K9 unit this is the kind of dog you want, something that can run, jump, and take down a potential threat very quickly....they're almost like cheetahs in a sense...

I have a large GS. Currently, he is the largest of the breed in the state of Texas.
He is just over 3 years old. His name is Winston-Tucker.
He is 42" from feet to top of head (not including ears)
He is 148 lbs.
He must be kept under 165 lbs. due to hip dysplacia.
He is already showing signs of arthritis in his front legs.
He is rescued, and is not used for breeding. Other than that, he is extremely beautiful and great w/ people and our other rescued pets.

These GSD's have been bread for family companions for many generations by the breeder. That is how they get a very calm temperament. This is not some cheap puppy farm dog that is the result of bad breeding. A well bread GSD is the most gentle and friendly companion in the world. You're an idiot.

I have a large breed and he is wonderful, has high drive but is a wonderful family dog. He is about 14 months old and 30 inches high at about 110lbs. I couldn't ask for a better dog.
