this is retarded. the lake isn't supposed to be frozen, and the bird is able to fly. this is a perversion of the great Prokofiev's original intent. Oh well, leave it to a lesser mind to muck up the spirit of a great classic. People should leave the classics alone!
I was waiting for this to come to the states and I finally caught it on Amazon - I just love this film, I think it is absolutely beautiful - it works both in contemporary and classical fashion. Such a work of art this. They did a splendid job in rejuvinating the story.
I was thinking could the duck not have been able to fly because in real-life they can fly really well and go fairly long distances, it would have also avoided the wolf and flew away to safety
What a common-sense question!! You'll have to ask the composer for the answer to that one.
Prokofiev invented the story and narration himself, drawing on memories of his own childhood.
Unfortunately, the man has been "otherwise occupied" since 1953, and he does not return phone calls or emails. Nor is he on Twitter or Facebook.
I do know, however, that the long & skinny look of the duck in this version is similar to real ducks the filmmaker saw in Europe during the research phase.
actually, many domestic ducks are too heavy to fly. Their body weight is too much for their wing strength. Whereas wild ducks eat less, are fitter and stronger, and can therefore fly :-)
It's great, the fact that it's stop-motion makes it that much better. However it's been changed into an almost urban setting, with a scrapyard-like background. In the score, the bird and duck argue willingly (not by accident) for instance, the pond isn't frozen and the cat ( mainly represented in the wind section with addition of the violas to balance quality of tone) is almost cunning in its sweetness, not so overly proud.
It is still a great watch, a modern take on what Prokofiev envisioned.
It was aired on PBS's Great Performances not long ago.
What happened to Duck is exactly how the story was originally written. We've been so brainwashed by the Disney-ized version that even though I knew this in advance, it was still a shock to see. Fortunately, no real animals were used in the making of the film. ;-)
Where can I buy this in dollars? I have never tried to buy anything from the UK, but it seems that is the only way to get this film. I thought it was brilliant.

Just watched this on a recording which I have and it really is a joy to watch.
At 32 minutes, this is the longest film to win the Best Animated Short category in the Academy Awards through 2010.
They should make more stop motion films like this.
Peter and the Wolf is superbly done! :)

Gotta love it when stop motion films like this emphasize the hand-made quality of the medium, while still looking nice and polished.

Russian composer Sergey Prokofiev wrote this wonderful music and a tale for children in 1936. The tale was changed in this anim. movie.

His wing was injured. He feels better and finally flies on his own at the end of the film.

I don't think it could have been able to get enough speed to fly on that slippery ice :)
