  • I swear, a 5 min Waits interview is better entertainment than most movies you will ever see.

  • hehe, this is the first time I think it's actually cool that both my parents are teachers!

  • Hallo Tommasino!!!

  • So many people hate Tom Waits... I just adore him :)

  • @addyken88 Who hates Tom Waits?

  • @CyborgEugenics noone!

  • Tango til theyre sore

  • wtf?

  • My Father was an exhaust mainifold ?? cool....Lol

  • Holly Cole version is a million times better!

  • @markd514 Dunno about that

  • @hexcane So true. No idea whether it's a clever act or just him.

  • just ultime .. <3

  • If he sounds like this imagin how his father sounds

  • the water is on fire!

  • i don't know waits too well, is he always like that or was he smokin a tree /her mother ^^ before the interview

  • I once filled my hat with confetti then jumped out my window, cracked my head open. Stupid hat fell off during the fall.

  • The album cover of Rain Dogs shows a picture taken by photographer Anders Petersen. In 1967 he was photographing a bar called Cafe Lehmitz in Hamburg. It's a beautiful book he made of it.

For years I thought it was Waits himself with some woman. :)

And what a cool hat he was wearing back then!

  • I only wish I was as cool as Tom Waits. Maybe, someday.

  • Great

  • He has quite an imagination.

  • letterman is out of his depth and doesnt deserve the interview.

  • Comment removed

  • i've never heard of tom waits before. this is the first time i'm listening to his music, and wow, I think this is what they call love at first sight.

  • @ronnyim12345 Be sure to check out his other interviews and music. He really is quite entertaining.

  • I want Tom Waits to be the new president of Poland!

  • The cover of the Rain Dogs album always reminds me of the scene in Fight Club with the protagonist and Bob... the guy with bitch tits. I see that album cover and I think Chuck Palahniuk. Dunno why. I guess the guy who made the Fight Club movie thought the same thing, because he used a few songs from this album. I forgot which ones.

  • "its like a big ship and the water is on fire"

  • letterman is a creep

  • this is original, this is not Lady Gaga. Tom Waits was and is just himself and he is amazing both with singing and song writing.

  • "my boy's older than me" XD

  • The great Tom Waits in his usual hilarious good form. But who is this Letterman-dude? He seems to be a bit out of his league...

  • DL: How would you describe the city?

Tom: Well it´s like a big ship, and the water is on fire

  • Hahaha Tom is hilarious. Love it.

  • Anybody ever seen the videos of TW on the old Ferwood Tonight show with Martin Mull and Fred Willard? Some of the best stuff I've ever seen! Been a TW fan since the late 70's, and he just keeps getting better! Thank you for this post. OUTSIDETHEBOCKS

  • @OUTSIDETHEBOCKS i saw that, "i'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy" my favorite quote

  • @OUTSIDETHEBOCKS

"I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy!" Classic interview!

  • So underrated.

  • ahh this is like my favorutie waits song.

    just wonderful.

  • Waits is one of those rare artists whose interviews are as entertaining as their music. His timing and delivery are impeccable.

  • Ben-Hur haha legend

  • They were big bastards for sure. ...bot it sounded so sweet.

A big fat vinyl album with a cover you could read and great Artwork. Could stick it on the wall if so intended. - instead of mini-land ....lol

  • look at the size of that CD!

  • People were smaller in those days.

  • MDR!!! XD

  • I enjoyed this comment immensely.

  • @YIIMM good one

  • @YIIMM

    You just made my day.

  • in those days they used to have those things called vinyl, dunno if you heard.

  • @xennelul It's vinyl.

  • @bertiethetoupee4 The obvious bus has four wheels and an engine, and it's leaving. You should probably enter it through the door, pay your fare and sit down before it leaves.

  • @rockypc24

    Yea, that's a cassete tape.

  • @NathanCMusicz it looks like a record

  • @xennelul when you look at an ipod you say "look at the size of that stereo!"?good one though

  • @xennelul It's a record...

  • @nofighting95 whats a "record" ;o)

  • @SteevAtomic You're not serious...are you?

  • @xennelul yeah, ever try rolling a joint on an mp3 player...

  • @xennelul Its not a cd you tard

  • @Lortagreb Oh dear

  • @Lortagreb you don't understand sarcasm you tard

  • @xennelul That's a laser disk brochacho!

  • @WhoCouldHeedTheWords actually, its an LP, a 12 inch record.

  • @moosemanis23

    It's a joke. :D

  • @xennelul put that in you cd player and play it

  • I remember seeing this on TV when it first appeared. Great stuff.

What I admire most about Tom Waits is his artistic authenticity. He speaks from the heart and doesn't care what the critics may say. The result is magnificent.

  • whoops! did the third verse twice. a shame nobody got to keep his clarinet beneath their bed till he got back in town.

  • Neither is Beefheart, for that vocal style, Screamin J Hawkins...

Waits and Beefheart took influence from many of the same.

  • Beefheart rules... but so does waits.

  • Tell Don Van Vliet about Chester Arthur Burnett and about Louis Armstrong and about Bukowski and Kurt Weil and about Burtl Brecht. They all came before the Captain, and Waits. Did you just find out about 20th century American music & literature? Good job! Now, don't screw up anyone else's thrill.

  • Burtl Brecht?

    haha.

  • O MELHOR SEM DUVIDA !!!!!!

  • Letterman and Waits are friends in real life

  • people will always relate beefheart to waits to man man but when it comes right down to it they're all their own people and have totally different vibes. they just do their own thing and don't give a shit if people like letterman get it.

  • Well said. And this is a gorgeous performance.

  • It's like a big ship and the water is on fire.

  • ----been----

  • SUCH a hottie. Will love him forever.

  • Is he still alive? please answer my question, I`ve looking for his CDs since I discovered him ( not long ago). I think he`s great but just seem to have vanished

  • yes he is still alive. just type his name in A search engine.

  • yeah man hes still alive and kicking his newer stuff is really really good as well as his old stuff :)

  • @SHUNGABALI he's still alive.

  • @rbdzntsfrlk Hey thank´s for the info...very kind of you.

  • I love waits.

  • wow he sounds alot like beehart.

    good, none the less

  • I love Tom Waits and all his gritty gravelly goodness.

  • thanks for posting this vid. this was the first song i heard him do... been hooked ever since.

  • Susan Boyle? McGweedy, you are SO wrong.

  • McGweedy is NEVER wrong.

  • Nei, sikkert ikke. :-D

  • i came across a song called" ice cream man" as i was looking for chingo bling's"paletero man" song...LOL..

i listened to Tom Waits-"ice creame man" and instantly i fell in love and even more after as i listened to a few others of his.

..... at first i honestly thought it was a black guy singing becuause it reminded me of jazz music and boogie. hehe ^-^

  • if you don't understand him, why do you waste your time posting your thoughts about him here?

  • Yeah... your Letterman performance was way better....

  • "i'll play you out of town!" - god bless ya tom! what a legend

  • Years ago, I spoke to one of his crewmembers while hitchhiking to Groningen, Tom videotapes all of his shows, and then analyses them, every note is rehearsed til they all see red.Love him.

  • The master of quality and originality.Modern day genius.

  • Well said !

  • Waits could dub Harold from Fallout.

    His music is very inspiring.

  • Musical freaking GENIUS!

  • this song is like walking through a fun house after dark, with things twisting about in crazy colored forms.

Thank you for the experience Tom.

  • Nice visual image. It kinda sounds like a song that the bad guy would sing in an old animated musical Disney movie, like Oogie Boogy from Nightmare Before Christmas or something. Sort of Vaudeville-sounding.

  • so what shall we do.....

    Buy the record....

This man is worth every sent spended"

    Love you Tom

  • "My mother is a tree" classic! =D

  • So does that make you a foreigner? Or just some retard that can't spell? And I'm pretty sure American's have most of the staples of modern invention smart ass.

  • Look at all the crap that came out in 1985, then look at Rain Dogs. It will make you wonder exactly what the hell the other "artists" were thinking.

  • Yeah, other than Tom Waits, Queen, and hardcore punk like Black Flag and Minor Threat, the 80's were pretty much a musical waste.

  • are you joking?

  • Echo & The Bunnymen!!!

  • Well you're a fucking moron then arent you.

  • Of course Waits is in a league of his own.

  • thank you soooo much for posting. i was too young/square to get him in the 80's...

  • then go to a record store and buy it. they still sell them everywhere

  • buy them all

  • Charisma like a mofo!

  • Amazing how he can turn the most banal interview questions into brilliant wit.

  • as long as sheep are alive you'll have a compliant girlfriend.

  • wow

i really think he has changed my outlook on life

  • me too

  • like a big ship but teh waters on fire!

  • Jesus! I want that big vinyl sleeve from the Rain Dogs album so bad.

  • same here

  • Ancientry is constantly renewed within each new moment--forever young!

  • That's funny I love New York but that's the same way I feel about the city "that it's like a big ship and the water is on fire."

    well put.

  • hate is not carelessness

  • I'd tell you all my secrets, But I lie about my past

  • "let me fall out of the window

    with confetti in my hair

    deal out jacks or better

on a blanket by the stairs..."

  • "It's like a big ship...and the water's on fire."

Excellent. Tom Waits rules the galaxy.

  • It says on your profile that you wish someone would kill Tom Waits.. if you hate him so much then why do you watch every video?? i have seen you comment on 4 or 5 videos.. i would figure most people would be a little more mature.. grow up and stop acting like a bitch....

  • i wish some ome would kill you

  • Make it me. I'm a suicide case.

  • tom waits rules, but fuck dave letterman

  • marry me tom waits i adore you! :)

  • what's so wrong about Tom being here in utube? If he complains I say take him off but there are some good performances here that wouldn't wanna miss

  • great answers!

  • 9th and heppein, top tune friend

  • Me and my friend saw him in Edinburgh a couple of weeks ago, him and his band were class (awesome harmonica solos too)

  • I saw Tom performing in Dublin last night. It was magnificent.

  • i know him

    he's super cool :)

  • How do you know him?

    Say Hi from me :))

  • Tom Waits is my idol

  • Isnt that the songs from "Down by Law " ? Just a different arrangement

  • Yes. The song's called "Tango 'till they're sore" . it's the closing song of movie down by law!

  • why do the audience laugh about a play about a psychopath ?

  • you my friend are an asshole.

  • Zen just asked a question about the audience, how is he an asshole for that? Unless Tom isn't serious I think they laugh cause they don't really know how to recieve Tom Waits' personality; they seem to think everything he says is a joke.

  • I bet all Tom Waits fans want to be your fans now. Thank you for making us see it so clearly. GO PEETCTYRE. PeetCtyre is the genius and Tom Waits is a retard because Peetctyre said so on YouTube. You must be such a likable person

  • /A great man? Well, that depends on whether or not he has our permission, no?/ Or so Nietzsche said to that effect. I gather he knew himself better than Hollywood.

  • And what music do you listen too?

We're waiting to hear what it is that is so great that you feel you know what music is.

    Please tell us!

    By the way.

    Where is your song?

  • thanks for posting this!

  • what did tom say at the beggining?

  • "This is about a guy who fell out of a window on new year's eve and the only thing that broke his fall was a little bit of confetty in his hair"

  • Greenday wouldn't even compare themselves to Tom Waits. Waits isn't mainstream, which means most children and lazy adults have no desire to find out about him (and many other amazing talents)

  • so what are you doing watching his video's and leaving comments. don't watch it if you don't like it

  • *antes el mundo molaba...that is, the world used to be cool*

  • WAITS WAITS WAITS Ten facet ma elegancki styl i wielka klasę

  • Rain Dogs is great.

  • Down by Law is fucking great. Check it out fags...

  • can't say i love new york because i have never been there, but the airliners taking out the two towers that i heard so much about did piss me off

  • art always tells a lie cloaked in truth

  • vice versa, man

  • Remember "Saving Private Ryan?" The movie became a mnemonic and voice of truth for war vets. Well, almost all of the soldiers hit in that movie fell back dead. In reality, one out of ten who are hit actually are killed. A lie cloaked in truth, my friend. Same things for bums in the street. Saw a movie that was claimed to be accurate about bums in the street. BS to me. I knew many of them and the movie was so dead wrong in so many ways. But I will say that art does tell truths, as well.

  • Saving Private Ryan was a piece of shit. It really was. See the film Come and See for a good, brutal war film.

And what the hell does this have to do with anything?

  • Thanks for the recommendation./ Oh, I was just using the movie, "Saving Private Ryan," as an example of how art is only an approximation of reality (of course, it has its own reality). Some people seem to take it too literal. That's what I was talkin' about to someone else. Actually, Waits was a big fan of Charles Bukowski who felt this way about art, especially movies. Think of the simile of Plato's cave wall.
