there was no actual gpu or cpu here. the guy was just trying to make a point that parallel processing is better than serial processing. but we know that even that isn't always true. some processes can only be done serially.

altho parallel data transfer is not always the best option

ide hard drives are slower then sata drives

ide is parallel sata is serial

ide is slower because of cross talk - data on one wire bleeding across to where it shouldnt be and the data sets getting mixed up

sata sends the data one peice after the other serially meaning it can go faster without getting hit by cross talk

also xbox 360 dvd drives are sata

They compare the two to show how bad CPUs are able to show graphics.

If you ever happen to programm a 3d Program and you use the so-called reference device to draw the graphics, you will use your CPU to render what you want to show.

And before anyone yells that this down't make sense: With the reference device you can basicly emulate current GPU functionalities.

The answer is, you cant and thats the difference between CPUs and GPUs. The CPUs try to get results by becoming faster in all of their abilities because they dont have another chance. The GPUs can easily use parallel structures and thats the reason they are different from CPUs. None of them is inferiour, they're just different.

While I agree the demonstratioin isn't quite as accurate as it was supposed to be, your example is flawed, too. Because while a CPU and GPU can do some of the same things, the CPU will do them them thousands of times slower.

The CPU would be a 2.5m high 250 pound man and the Gpu would be 10 1.5m big 100 pound men. The thing is even though the bigger man can do things the smaller men cant do this work is better suited for the small men as they can do much "easy" work at once while the big man cant. Its the very same argument...

CPU's cannot do everything a GPU can do. There are hardware-specific abilities that a CPU could only do thru complicated software emulation, and then it would be thousands of times slower.

And look up CUDA. While I don't like nVidia, using a GPU for specific tasks like crunching numbers can produce results literally thousands of times faster.

@Draknfyre I think you are understanding something wrong. Everything GPUs and CPUs do are calculations. They are both just "processing units" And yeah they can do the exact same thing. Of course there are some calculations which are implemented in the GPUs's hardware which cant be done by the CPU directly, but they can be done by bypasses. So yeah they are the exact same thing with the one difference that GPUs are optimized in some cases. That doesnt change the fact they can do the same things..

Calculations, yes, but speed of calculations, no. Like I said, look up CUDA. When number-crunching certain things, you can get results thousands of times faster using a CUDA-enabled program, and a CUDA-capable CPU. Not exaggerations, but literally thousands of times faster.

And there's still hardware features not found in CPU's that exist in GPU's. Their very architecture is different. Using software emulation to do the features found on GPU hardware would be ridiculously slow.

But still the GPU is basically just a bunch of small slow CPUs crunched together with some other units which enable it to do certain things /calulations way faster than a CPU can do...
