I really believe this Afghan army is hopeless, especially if they smoke drugs. Drugs take away any initiative and all ambition. A sense of discipline must be instilled in childhood. It is highly doubtful they will ever develop any. What a waste of time, money and energy for the US Army.

Undisciplined army, no leadership, and tripling the amount of afghani soldiers is 3x the amount of undisciplined soldiers. These people need help to get back onto there feet. If we abandon them, things will only become worse. Patience would be a key trait to the war, but people are concerned about money back at home, yet they live in good homes and eat and live normally without worrying about walking outside getting shot or kidnapped.

Al Queda, not the Taliban attacked the United States on 9-11-2001. Al Queda in Afghanistan was wiped out in 2002. Since then the U.S. has been fighting Taliban only, the same guys who defeated the Soviet Union in the 1980s. It may be a noble cause for us to fight the Taliban for an unlimited number of years like we fought the Communists in Vietnam. My only question is does the U.S. have the will to fight such an unlimited war and make such a sacrifice?

And the sad fact is that most of the "organized" militias prior to our arrival were very loosely assembled with no real military discipline or structure. I think its a good thing that the US is trying to help out Afgan country with their military, but what I think that the only reason the Afgan soldiers are not really into it is because they dont have someone screaming down their backs like our military does to our soldiers. They need to be taught discipline and need to cut out the use of drugs IF they are to serve their country. If those two things were embedded the Afgan army would maybe have a chance against any enemy thats out there.

First off all, a person whom is in serious physcial pain substance such as hashish or Weed can easily act as a minor cure to the pain. But since these individuals are not in any physcial pain using the substance is considered abuse. Since their really isn't a cause to take any substance it's called abuse a drug. Since Hashish has higher potency it's an issue.

The problem with the insurgency is that the Taliban grow the opium and sell it to the ANA, who then fight the Taliban, who then fight back and launch a propaganda war showing the incompetence of the ANA and their habit of using drugs (and the Taliban are known to kick anyone who does drugs out of their ranks, or severely punish them), who then try and justify their acts and fail miserably, which then gives more support to the Taliban, who get more money and land to grow even more opium.

Undisciplined army, no leadership, and tripling the amount of afghani soldiers is 3x the amount of undisciplined soldiers. These people need help to get back onto there feet. If we abandon them, things will only become worse. Patience would be a key trait to the war, but people are concerned about money back at home, yet they live in good homes and eat and live normally without worrying about walking outside getting shot or kidnapped.
I fear something bad will happen when we leave soon.

Since then the U.S. has been fighting Taliban only, the same guys who defeated the Soviet Union in the 1980s. It would probably be easier if more of the soldier spoke the Afghani language and vice versa. I mean, we are occupying there land. The least we could do is learn their language.

The video doesn't show it, but almost every forward operating platoon is assigned at least one interpreter. And the sad fact is that most of the "organized" militias prior to our arrival were very loosely assembled with no real military discipline or structure. When I was there 4 years ago, you got the general impression that the Afghani soldiers just didn't give a shit. Like they were just killing time until we left and the drug barons took control again.

I feel that what these Marines are saying are when you getting geared up for a night patrol. You DON'T get wasted, ON ANYTHING (including alcohol). I've always felt there is a time and place for everything including BONG HITS, BUT the military (any military) ISN'T one of those times. If alcohol was apart of afghan culture. Those Marines would be bitching about them getting drunk.
I actually agree with the Afghan commander mentioning the character of the person is to blame not the drugs.

anyone who read accounts from journalists and foreigners covering both the initial russian-afghan war and the subsequent civil war have commented on this time and time again.
Also; in the modern afghan army, each district contributes a set number of recruits to the central command.
it's not in their best interest to send their most competent capable young men. they're kept home and are either fighting for their local warlords or already joined the taliban

I think its a good thing that the US is trying to help out Afgan country with their military, but what I think that the only reason the Afgan soldiers are not really into it is because they dont have someone screaming down their backs like our military does to our soldiers. They need to be taught discipline and need to cut out the use of drugs IF they are to serve their country. If those two things were embedded the Afgan army would maybe have a chance against any enemy thats out there.

The American army are on drugs too - its just that they are more discreet about it and also that they use politically correct drugs like alcohol and tobacco so they dont get in trouble. If you join the Army and are asked to invade and kill innocent people then do you really think those soldiers are not going to use drugs? If they didnt use drugs they would probably go insane. And when i talk of drugs i mean all drugs including alcohol.

Well about anything can be considered a drug. But the question isn't about drugs it's about drug abuse. First off all, a person whom is in serious physcial pain substance such as hashish or Weed can easily act as a minor cure to the pain. But since these individuals are not in any physcial pain using the substance is considered abuse. Since their really isn't a cause to take any substance it's called abuse a drug. Since Hashish has higher potency it's an issue.

No you have the wrong end of the stick, my point was that people who use marijuana/hashish generally dont have violent tendencies. Either way we are fighting a losing battle, majority of the people in Afganistan dont want us there anyway, these soldiers are only in the army probably to feed their families - If these people fire up some weed as opposed to AK47s i dont see what the problem is, i thought we should be spreading peace besides they(USA) came under their own ignorance and stupidity.

I'm joining the Army Reserve as an MP (at least until I'm out of college and will go active) By my unit is up for orders this summer and will probably be deployed in 2010... maybe
my CSM (Command Sergeant Major) said we will most likely be sent to Afghanistan, if not Iraq, to do stuff like this. I can't stand incompitant people so I'll probably be pissed at the guys we are training.
but I've heard the Iraqis are more motivated so maybe i'll get lucky.
