  • Steam engines became so efficient just as diesel was introduced. A political thing.

Same for cars and everything in life. Bar fridge size electrical generators that can be powered by rubbish are available.

  • Am I the only person that realizes this locomotive plus its coaches looks almost EXACTLY like the ones from the intro in Shining Time Station?

  • i like this

  • ESO ES VERDADERO SER CONTAMINANTE,ES UNA MAQUINA DE HUMO ESO.

  • thanks for the video mi 3 year old boy enjoyed it so much he fell asleep watching and listening to mellow sound of this grandeur thanks again.

  • steeeaaaaaammmmmm stteeeeeaaaammm

steee eee ee eaamm steee eee eammm

  • its so slow!

  • Shit, thats a lot of steam

  • vØll_geil_gébt_màl_bÉí_gÒòglË:_geldeasy_eìN_vôll_krass

  • what steam waste? someone should design to harness those waste stem and make the hydrigon power, added in to giant woooooooooo!!!! then this iron giant will be power rocket....

  • this is excellent. i see a diesel engine in there also about 3 or 4 cars back. why's that.

    chud1able

  • I've been in Switzerland and I want to come back in the future.

Check out my channel and watch my videos.

    Thank you guys :-)

  • Oh, feels so good in my ears! Oh.... AH!!! YEss! XD

  • one badass train.

  • Kinda reminds me of Thomas the Tank engine :)

  • A steam train passes near my house every night, and ive fallen in love with the sound. I love falling asleep to it.

  • muito show esse video e parabéns !! abraços.

  • naufal love this steam train

  • which trains would pull the most disel or steam?

  • bad mother

  • I remember the last steam train to Atlantc City N.J. The turn table in town was long gone, and only one good track was left into town, the other was torn up. I remember the mournful wail of it's whistle as it went back to Phila backwards. When I was a kid, those Steam trains regularly set the marshs on fire with their sparks. I walked the tracks and the later diesels really could sneak up on you with their brownish shimmering light . LOL

  • Does the engine firebox in the video use Bazooka's across the grate. I've had that happen(Flash backs) to an engine I used to run for Frisco; until they down sized the orifices & at the same time they Installed a Ryerson Siphon. My engines pulled the Fruit Land express up off river grade; they were all refrigerated cars heavy as hell.

"The Fruitland replaced with EMD's" & B&N phased the run out/nuther name was the "Simplot" cus' load was Frozen potatoes for Carnation French Frys

    HighPriest

  • It's not exhaust coming off the wheel cylinders (it's steam) The exhaust goes out the stack (and it there are not engine cylinders -- just fire and steam -- external combustion). Those mournful steam whistles would blow across the prairies at night (when the quail were singing "bob-White") Never knew where they were going .. just heard the whistle far off on the in the distance ... makes you want to write a song..

  • @Gitfidlpickr

Well put..Think I will write a song about it...

  • REALLY good camera work of a great looking old girl! My 2-year-old went nuts, going CHOO CHOO WOOO WOOO etc. (ahem, and maybe I joined him a bit)

    beautiful.

  • why is it painted all black it reminds me of the alien movie

  • here is the latest excurtion planed come here to vote for your home town :D

  • Thanks so much, I really enjoyed your video. It must have taken a lot of work to get ahead of that engine so often. Beginning around 10.05 was surprised to see & hear three times that engine spinning its wheels while already going at a good clip. She must have so much power that she just wants to run. Note the sparks/flames at the rear wheels as the engineer tries to throttle her back. A very neat video for sure, thanks again.

  • My father worked for the railways in India and when I was about 4 he let clean the brass fittings on the engine. Then later, the scent of the engine, the steam, the increasing frequency of the steam puffs as the engine accelerated - got me facinated by the wonderful creation of the steam engine. Then later, my father was in charge of the train from Kalka (where we lived) to Simla (where I went to school. No greater invention than the staem engine!

  • Zoltan Bebto from Budapest. Hungary,Europe.

  • nice train >!

  • So.....Much....Steam....Cant....See....

  • poluição !

  • this i noticed has a diesel engine right behind the coal car just for some extra power when needed

  • is there a diesel sitting behind the oil tender? if so why is it there, and is it operational? Nice vid Skip!

  • @cairnswk Because they were heading up mountain you know how steam trains are.Weak ass trains thats why they got scrapped.

  • That is one nice observation car at the end! UP makes up (haha) for the western rr takeover by having their steam program with 844 and 3985. Nice vid! 5 stars

  • That is one nice observation car at the end! UP makes up (haha) for the western rr takeover by having their steam program with 844 and 3985.

  • I love it. Thanks, Skip. It's good to see such a thing of beauty is still chugging along.

  • does this one work by jet-propulsion? lol so much steam shot out..

  • Why so much exhaust right from the cylinders?

Flushing out water condensation in the cylinders?

Would not the first few exhausts rid the cylinders of water?

    Can't they burn cleaner?

Those huge side rods must be under such tremendous stress.

Does this locomotive pound the rails, or are things well balanced out?

Amazingly steady video from a moving vehicle!

What causes the wheels to slip? Wet rail?

Thank you for posting this, Skip.

    RWG, Denver

  • @robertgift yea the release of steam directly through the cylinders is to clear out condensation

in reality, steam engines actually burn cleaner than people expect - 100% of everything coming out of the cylinders is steam, and a large part of what comes out of the stack is also just steam how clean they burn can also be determined by what they burn. 844 here burns oil, but the Grand Canyon Railroad is converting a steam engine to burn vegetable oil

  • @N7075 100%? Hardly.... I used to ride a coal-burning steam train in NC and if the wind was right, the ash would go right in your eyes.

  • @N7075 have they tried converting trains to lpg?

  • @robertgift The cylinder drains are left open, so that you and I can see how bloody wonderful steamy stuff is. It is all for the benefit of photographers etc. Show 'n Tell.

    Aint it bloody great though...!

  • @robertgift Steam condences in the cold cylinders, they cylinder cocks must be left open for several revolutions. Water will not compress and damage will occur should any water be left in them. Typically, 10 turns of the drive wheels.

on one of these large locos there is 4000 pounds of reciprocating mass. the rods are counter balanced, but power pulse harmonics are not and that does pound the rail a bit.

Wet rusty rail can cause slips, so can grease on them from a flange greaser.

  • It's nise to see!

  • You cant love trains all that much if yyou didnt know steam trains still existed haha

  • Who the heck wants a boxy diesel if you can get something like THAT

  • WOW!!! I love all of that steam at 2:16!!!

  • brilliant

  • Zoltan Bebto from Hungary,Europe.

  • Like the fact that it just has the sound of the trains...no disco soundtrack!

  • Zoltan Bebto from Hungary,Europe.

  • fantastic, loved the shots fron the car,i know what its like to stand around in all weathers waiting for a steamer to show up as they are often late here in the U K .thanks for shareing it with us.Tony

  • at 1:40 it look's like it doing a burnout

  • @BLAQRAIN27

    power!

  • Marvellous to see the old beauty still running! Reminds me of my childhood in East Africa, going on 48 hour journeys on the narrow-gauge line from Dar es Salaam to Mwanza, hauled by British-made locomotives.

  • That steam locomotive looks beautiful, and it still runs just right.

  • nice 9 10 10 ted

  • Let me ask you something.... The main loco (steam) is helped by a turbine or diesel engine that is behind??? or what kind of tender is that...... and why??? tks...

  • Let me ask you something.... The main loco is helped by a turbine or diesel engine that is behind??? or what kind of tender is this...... tks...

  • nice video Skip history is repeating itself #844 is back in Idaho.

  • That steam locomotive looks beautiful, and it looks like it has lots of steam power.

  • Nice video Skip this may have been taken in 2007 but #844 is back on my neck of the railroad

  • I just love seeing the steam pouring out of those things. Their horns sound so beautiful, too.

  • i love this vid in fact it's in my favorites, but the only thing i don't like is that piece of crap on the back of that yellow tank

  • that is a complete disaster look at this smoko!

  • This was a real treat.

  • Is the diesel being used at all or is it just a backup or used for steep climbs.

  • It has a diesel with it they must not completly trust the old steamer.

  • well, there you go,folks..the awesome power of steam..

  • what a burnout ;D joke

  • 0-60 in 20 minutes

  • as much as i love trains...i ant never knew that steam engines steal existed....where and when video was taken???

  • @rjordan231 On the road from Cheyenne to Rawlins, Wyoming

  • @SkipW There is a working steam train line in Denmark to

  • @rjordan231 yep there are still a handful of steam engines in service around the country today.

  • @rjordan231 there are many steam locomotives still in service. There are even entire railways devoted to restoring and operating them. One of my favorites is the keighley and worth valley railway in england.

  • @rjordan231 look up challenger one is still i use!

    =D

  • @rjordan231 Not only do they still exist, some countries still use them regularly!

  • @rjordan231 Not only do they still exist, they are the only way to travel in some parts of the world!

  • kuesta locomotiva, ce l' ho in modellino!

  • Great steam in cold and rainy weather. Glad you got out there in windy Wyoming! How's the newer video camera working out?

  • I have absoloutley no idea why i watched that.

  • Awesome!!!!!!

  • It has a very beautiful whistle.

  • so much power 4 one steamy

  • The famous wheel slip video! Re-reviewing!

  • Is the diesel helper REALLY necessary?

  • @virginiaorganbuilder Yes. It is in case the steamer runs out of water or coal. It is also useful if the Steamer fails

  • @virginiaorganbuilder that diesel is there if the 844 breaks down they can still move it where they can fix it

  • This is really something now. :)

  • WHO NEEDS THAT DIESEL?

  • @kirbyfan600 It is in case the steamer runs out of water or coal. It is also useful if the Steamer fails

  • @kirbyfan600 it give the train electric power, like a generator...

  • The mighty steam maschines of the past look waaaaaay better then the modern diesel/electric ones. I always get exited when I see a steam engine in action, I guess that's the kid in me.

  • Choo-choo!

  • it looks like it broke a gas fuse and its going to cause a fire

  • it looks like it broke a gas fuse and its going 2 cause a fire

  • it looks like it broke a gas fuse and itz gon cause a fire

  • My father worked on the railroad for 32 years. I remember going to the round house as a kid and climbing all over the steam locomotives at the Reading Railroad car shops in St. Clair, Pennsylvania. It reminds me of when America was America.

Great videos! Thanks for the memories.

  • My daughter is two and this is her favorite video to date. She sits and watches this about two or three times every week. Great video. Now I have something I can share with my daughter that connects me to my childhood. In addition, my father was a serious model railroad collector. It has all come full circle.

  • imagine putting your finger in the wheel wow

  • SKIP.............You rock with the locomotive videos!!!!Well done and good quality to boot. Ken C.

  • What a wonderfull steamlocomotiv. I enjoyed every single minute.

    Greetings from Sarpsborg, NORWAY

    Le Mint

  • that train was on Shining time Station

  • @BSBINC1 yup the very same one

  • yeah on those fast runs i think the deisels were pushing alittle because look at the stack smoke hardly any and at that speed ud see smoke to keep up steam at that speed

  • for an old gal, she's still got some shift in her!

  • You have alot of nice steam footage do you sell some of it to pentrax?

  • You have alot of nice steam footage do you sell some of it to pentrax?

  • great, thnx for this)

  • Note how the oil burner backfires below the firebox when she´s slipping because of the sudden change of draft

  • nice slips at 10:28 and 10:40ish

good job capturing a cool machine

  • yeah i been across the trains tracks and under the train tracks.....also to the side of it.

  • great train and whistle

  • Thank you for your passion with the old steam trains. Incredible to be able to watch them in motion. Loved it, Thanks again for sharing to others.

  • wish we still there

  • nice.

  • Beautiful video!

  • Have often wondered whey the diesel assist...

has more power than the diesel, an pull that train with ease...

just doesnt make sense..takes away some of the reality to some extent

  • I see its carrying passeger cars...how does one get tickets for something like this?

  • I like this engine. Despite her heavy weight, she runs like a sewing machine!

  • Water.

  • W O W!!! What a beautiful sight; thanks for shooting this video. This is a magnificent machine.

  • hello let me skip the videos marvel of the engine is also my passion to see these machines on the rails, moved to Mexico and I do rpoyectos rescue stations in mexico to have a good use. congratulations on your valuable material ami I wanted to be on those trips to the UP 844

  • Made in the USA!!!

  • Excelente video. Mis hijos los disfrutan mucho

  • The Famous Union Pacific 844!!

  • there is nothing more badass than driving a vehicle that runs off of burning coal, can drag 100x its own size and weight, and shoots out burning hot steam from the sides. HELL YEA! *****

  • hello

  • No matter what my interests change to, stuff like this never gets old.

    Steam Fan for Life.

  • I've been looking for this video with the wheel slip! Great five star capture!

Please excuse me if I've already commented this video before!

  • Pity there's a diesel behind it.

  • that engine its nice, but it is also a smoke factory on wheels:P

  • u should see the 3985 challenger locomotive which is the worlds largest operating steam locomotive its somthing else =)

  • talk about steam!!!...

  • I saw a classic steam machine restored here in The Netherlands a while back. Amazing, like going back in time!

  • Un F---ing real what a machine take me back to 1959.

  • Thank you, Skip.

Can'they gethe oil to burn more cleanly?

Cleaner means less soot in the boiler tubes for more efficient heatransfer.

My great uncle fired a huge freight locomotive. Was proud that he generated the least smoke possible.

Why so much cylinder venting. I presume to expell water, but why so long?

Loved youriding along side with camera NOT in the wind!

Flat, I can see how the sudden rush of air pulled through can mess up the firebed.

    No way to predictraction loss.

  • Fumaça demai e pouca velocidade não ? abraços.

  • OMG, this is lovely............!!

  • i just love the sounds made by the rail...and the sounds of the steam engine is just awesome!!

    thanks for the great video

  • What a beauty..hats off to the maintenance crew who keep her going ..

love the mournful cry of her whistle ...

  • 有補機???????

  • damn thats some farting ugly smelling train there:)))) LOL lamfo

  • Total Awesome'ness to the absolute max!!!

  • What a beautiful fire-breathing monster. Probably not doing much to help with the problem of Global Warming though, but hey, who cares! Great video.

  • So fine looking.

  • Well its a good thing that Union Pacific Railways didn't scrap the 844's! I heard that they are still running today! =D

  • 未だ現役で蒸気が走っているとは・・・

  • @lambstone2000 translated- The steam is running and still active.

my answer - It sure is!

  • Let the midnight special shine a light on me

  • Listen to that stack talk, I LOVE IT.

  • Nice video, but really tarnished by the copyright notice bouncing all over the place. Decide where you want it, and in what color, and leave it there so we don't have to be distracted.

  • @CosmicRay2515 i hear you & my more recent videos, we have tried to work on that

  • I am an engineer on the Norfolk Southern.. I'd have no idea how to even make this thing move. lol.

  • 6:45 and more, beautiful steam power!!!
